I want to install CentOS on my laptop which version, whether live CD or USB boot is feasible.
My Current System Information is as follows.
OS: Windows 7 Professional
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 2.27GHz, 2262 MHz, 2Core(s)
System Type: X86 Based PC
RAM: 4GB
I've got the latest CENTOS v5.5 (disk 1 of 2) x86_64 that I've fully installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 1749 laptop (less than 30 days old). I specifically tested the media at the beginning of the install, and it was good. I'd also verified the md5sum before burning it to disc. During installation from the DVD the X Windows GUI won't appear brightly lit and easliy viewable, the screen remains (seemingly -- more on this in a moment) blank. I experienced this when hitting enter at the install boot prompt. After a subsequent text-based install (which went fine), from runlevel 3, I ensured the X Windows group was fully installed, and tried "startx". Same blank (dim!) screen behavior.
Now the seemingly blank screen has a weird twist. In changing the light in my work room (for other reasons) I noticed that there was a dim, barely visible X desktop on the screen. It is extremely faint, most definitely unusable, cannot see anything clearly enough to make out setting or try to change anything. Unable to see any mouse movement, etc... Suprisingly, a flashlight helps to make out bits and pieces, though nowhere near enough to be usable. Killing X by any method doesn't bring back the brightness, though the console is usable again as such (i.e. reboot works). I've tried the <Ctrl><Alt><F2> and the like as part of the troubleshooting, it works funcionally, but doesn't return the (normal?) screen brightness along the way.
The system came from Dell with Micro$loth Windoze 7 x64 bit and operated normal (well, as normal as Windoze can). When system-config-display is ran from the commandline, the screen clears and brings up that utility. I can point a flashlight at the screen and see some elements of what looks like a functional/working utility. I cannot visually discern the mouse to try and select anything. I've floated around the screen a lot, but haven't seen anything I can leverage to make a change to the screen/monitor being used. I believe the video is an integrated (into the CPU) graphics chip/card/whatever.

I have a Toshiba A205 S5804 laptop that had Vista Home Premium installed. Tried to install Centos 5 (2.6.18-8-el5) and when I went through the install process, X Server failed to start so I had to go thorough the command line install. Once the install completed, it only booted to console.
The default resolution for this laptop is 1280X800 but I dont know if that is why or not. if anyone has a clue about my issue, please let me know.. I really dont want to install windows.

I'm running CentOS 5.3. I have the laptop configured to suspend when the lid is closed. But it won't suspend when the lid is closed. Add if I try to suspend from the toolbar, it won't suspend.

I plan to reinstall linux (CentOS 5.2 = RHEL5) in my laptop because of insufficient diskspace partition in /. Only allocate 8.8G for /root and the rest to /app/Current my kernel version is 2.6.28, which are latest than the CentOS release which is 2.6.18, I think. Someone compile the kernel for me because he said my laptop network card is not recognized in the 2.6.18 released. I am not sure how he did it. I am a bit worried because if I reinstall again, I will face the same problem that my network card is not recognized!.

I've tried to put it on 1680x1050 and it worked out well I guess but the graphics had become very slow. For example I have to wait 5 to 6 seconds to scroll from page to page in a pdf file. Minimizing a window takes also a lot of time. I have a NVIDIA card in my PC.

Another laptop with fedora 10 installed finds the network, so the problem is not the network. I guess it's a problem with the wireless driver / firmware, as i had this problem on fedora some time ago, and i've solved installing the firmware. Now i've installed the firmware, i rebooted, and it still doesn't find any network.

If I boot the text version and then perform a startx command I still get no display. I have been able to install other Linux distributions without this type of issue. View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make my system automatically shutdown once the battery level is low, but still without success. I've tried kpowersave, gnome-power-manager, kpower, klaptop but none of these worked for me. Well, I can't imagine I would be that stupid, but simply it doesn't work. In all cases mentioned above (kpower, klaptop, gnome-power-manager) I've tried to setup the laptop to shutdown once the defined level is reached, but the laptop never actually switched off unless all the battery was drained.
Btw. I think all the above mentioned apps only work once the user is logged in. But I'd like the solution to work also when the PC is on without anyone logged in. I thought I could write a bash script based on parsing of acpitools output and define it as a service, which would monitor the battery level, but I simply don't believe there isn't any functional solution to this.
I have a desktop and a laptop. I have Netgear WGR614v9 Wireless Router connected to my desktop. Since my Laptop is pretty old I also bought a Netger Wireless Adapter for the sme model. Now when I connect the Wireless Adapter I am unable to connect to Wi-fi. I am new to Linux, after googling I ran "lsusb" command and it showed Netgear Wireless adapter and its version. Also in GUI when I open File Browser it also shows the Adapter detected but I am unable to connet the same to my router. Also the blue light on the adapter is not glowing.

I downloaded and install the NVIDIA graphics driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-260.19.29.run When I run system-config-display the display configuration appears but is very, very faint. Increasing screen brightness has no effect.
I have installed Centos 5 on my laptop.And I have installed Oracle databases and also VMWARE server 2 software on it.But I see no page opens in firefox browser on this laptop.I can't understand why.The laptop doesn't have internet connection. But the VMWare web access page where we can login to console and create virtual machines doesn't require internet access.I am a newbie to linux and also network issues.How to figure out what is the problem? Are there any step by step guide to investigate this issue?All the pages I open get stuck with "waiting for abc.com" etc.It never opens.Javascript is enabled for this browser.

The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

In Fedora and various other distros I have successfully used Laptop Mode Tools URL... to help set the hard disk APM value meaning the hard disk would stop rapidly increasing the Load Cycle value when running on mains. The setting I choose to use was hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda when the laptop is running off of mains power and set in scripts supplied with the Laptop Mode Tools RPM which will run as a service.
The problem I am having with CentOS is I can't get Laptop Mode Tools to run as a service either from the RPMForge repo (old version) or by installing the latest Fedora version from Laptop Mode Tools site above. I am therefore having to manually set hdparm -B 254 /dev/sda when running which I occasionally forget An error is seen during boot but which changes the CentOS boot to verbose mode but I am unable to locate the error in any of the /var/log files so I can put it in here.Can anyone suggest a way of creating a script suitable for CentOS which will auto apply the above (or other) power saving value for when a laptop is running off of mains power?If anyone can also advise how I can confirm what the error is I can also forward it to the author of Laptop Mode Tools.
I am running CentOs 5.3 x86_64 on a Dell Latitude E6400 and can't get dual head to work.
My graphics card(s) are Intel Mobile 4 integrated (one in the laptop, one in the docking station)
My displays are two Dell 2208 WFP
I run the "Display settings" GUI and select "Dual head", "Spanning desktops" with the right card & monitor.
When I restart X it fails to start with stack trace in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file (full log attached)

I have problems with my laptop which runs well until it decides to freeze and it either shuts down or I have to turn it off. After I restart the system there is no hdd check to signal that something really wrong happened. I suspect the nVidia driver for the Quadro FX 770M video card is responsible but I am not sure. Also, firefox sometimes runs sluggish (maybe flash is causing something to overcharge?) and often times the computer freezes when I am using firefox. The funny thing is that all my heavy simulations are not causing problems and often times they use 10GB of swap with no complains. When the laptop freezes I see two keyboard lights flashing intermittently. How can I figure out what is going on? I mean are there any log files where I can look for something or can I setup a log procedure to detect the cause of this problem?

I connect this wired eth0 to a wall socket to access Internet via DHCP (eg the assigned address is like 192.168.192.xx). I do not have access to the ADSL router. How can I turn this laptop into a Wifi access point to allow, say my Ipad or any wireless-only client, to access the Internet thru this laptop ?
That is, communication between iPad to laptop is wifi(ad-hoc connection ??), laptop to the ADSL router is wired LAN. The laptop need to have some bridging build in ? If you can refer me some concepts, then I can follow up from there.
Or better yet, has anybody does this before ?
I am using an HCL k38 pdc laptop and I am unable to boot KDE live cd of opensuse 11.4. The system boots to a graphical screen where a progress bar is shown. the progress bar proceeds to about 90% and then my system hangs. ALl I can see on my screen is that graphical image with suse logo and progress bar. Though my mouse works and I can move it all around the desktop but if I try pressing any key (CAPS/NUM LOCK/SCROLL LOCK) i dont see any LED notification for that. this concludes that the system is hanged.
Key board has no issue as I can use it in Windows.
I tried to boot the lice cd in text mode and it worked very fine from there I installed the system on to my HDD in dual boot mode with windows XP. But after installation when I boot opensuse from HDD it stucks at the same position.
I think this issue is with Nvidea graphics card as when the system boots I see an error message that says that the RAM has an address conflict with VGA ROM.
How can I use opensuse. I have even tried ubuntu 10.10 but it also hangs while booting or after booting. So far I have been able to manage only Sabayon Linux working on this machine however the ubuntu 9.10 was working on this system and it also started behaving similarly after I upgraded it to ubuntu 10.04.
I have bluetooth enabled in a Windows desktop Machine, which is connected to internet.
