Ubuntu Installation :: Lose Data That Already Stored On PC - Run OK In Netbook?

Jul 26, 2010

I am an Apple user who ended up buying a netbook with XP installed on it. I got the Acer Aspire One zg5 refurb, because it was super cheap. Problem is, I noticed I hate the Windows experience and I would like to have something similar to Mac in this computer, and I've had some casual experience with linux before (through a live CD that a friend gave me). However, I need to keep the XP running on this thing because I need it for work. The main use that I have this netbook for is to take up notes, do some light music/video editing (for which I have to admit XP has been strangely okayish), listen to music, browse the web, among other things. I would like to install Linux in this because it offers great tools for these functions, and I need to have those on the run. So I thought I would try to double-boot this computer with XP and Ubuntu, but I am sort of a beginner on this aspect.

My questions are what follows: If I use the GParted that comes with the Ubuntu 10.04 installation disk, will I lose the data that I have already stored on this PC? If my computer isn't able to give the needed resolution to run Ubuntu, would it still run OK in the netbook? Will my computer run OK if I make it double-boot? Would it be too much of a hassle for its Atom processor to do this? I would like to install some of the apps that come with the Ubuntu Studio version if I can make the system double-boot. Is this possible? Can I customize the desktop version of ubuntu to give me some ot
her color for the taskbar instead of the blackish gray that is set by default?

I also told it the 6 drives were raid 5 but did not tell it anything else besides not to format them. When I booted for the first time I found that it was rebuilding the raid 5 and the file system type is unknown.

SUSE / Novell :: Removing Retarded Firefox Update

Sep 8, 2010

for the past 2 month or so i've been constantly annoyed by my yast automatic updater to install a regress patch to send firefox back to 3.5.11...which i've been ignoring for a long time because to be honest i'm convinced that those suse developers have pretty much lost the plot recently , instead i've sticked to the latest stable releases of firefox that is 3.6.8 (btw today 3.6.9 has been released and i'm about to upgrade firefox to that...today)

anyways , my suspecion has been confirmed when another update poped up that said it's gonna update firefox from 3.5.11 to 3.6.8 (which is what i have now)so the question: HOW does the updater track which updates have been installed and which haven't? and how can i remove all or ignore firefox related updates ?

General :: Removing All Hard Drive Data Quickly

Feb 20, 2011

I'm looking for a way to quickly remove all data/partitions/boot records from my hard drives while running linux (distribution is irelevant). There are lots of ways to do this that I know of, but they all have some problems. Here's a list of what I've tried/thought of already. The most obvious is fdisk: Simply delete all the partitions. This usually works just fine and is very quick, but there are times it just doesn't....I'm realy not sure what gets left behind...I remove the MBR as well..but whatever it is, it's in the way. A couple other options are:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=1M
shred -vfz -n 1 /dev/sdb

Both of these approaches are great if you're selling the components and want to make it very difficult for anyone to recover data. The draw-back is they take so very long to run. I've got four 1.5 TB drives that I've been writing zeros to for 2 days now. If you thought watching grass grow or paint drying was boring. A hundred years ago or so, when I was doing tech support for Windows 95 users we used this nifty dos-based debug script to wipe the hard drive. It was sort-of a last resort thing, but it worked beautifully, most of the time. If the customer had already formated, fdisked, fdisk /mbr, reinstalled Windows, but still couldn't get the thing to work, this would clean the drive so you could do a fresh install.

Just in case someone wants this, I'll post it. To use: first boot to some type of DOS environment in which you have the program "debug".

debug
-F 200 L1000 0
-A CS:100
xxxx:0100 MOV AX,301
xxxx:0103 MOV BX,200
xxxx:0106 MOV CX,1
xxxx:0109 MOV DX,80

NOTE: Type 80 for the primary hard drive - HD 0,
or type 81 for the secondary hard drive - HD 1.
In most cases, the primary hard drive is required 80.

xxxx:010C INT 13
xxxx:010E INT 20
xxxx:0110 (Leave this line blank. Press the <Enter> key to continue.)
-G

The message Program terminated normally appears. How to do something like that while running linux?

Ubuntu / Apple :: Removing ._DS_Store Files During Data Migration

Jun 22, 2010

I'm migrating data (music and videos mainly) from a NAS server that was being used as my iTuens Media Folder onto a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd like to get rid of all the ._DS files as well as other files that os x 10.4 has been creating such as duplicates of mp3 files but prefixed with "._".

The reason I'm keen to remove all of these files is because I stumbled across a corrupted ._DS_Store file that caused me all sorts of head aches and I don't want them causing any problems in linux.

I've used the search function in Nautilus to search for ._ but it returns no results, even when I'm searching in a directory that I know for certain has those files in it. I have 'View hidden files' selected.

They have Kookies.[URL]However Terminal gave me an error, saying dependencies about odbcinst1debian2, saying that it depends on odbcinst but is not going to be insalled. So I went into Synaptic and manually removed these, then did the long command.Things got removed, reboot. Now Plymouth boots, but it stops at five orange dots (not moving) and then nothing. No login menu. I held down the power button and rebooted three times, all stuck at Plymouth.Yeah I can reinstall Ubuntu, I have the disk, but there are many configs that I did, that I do not remember.

General :: Removing Linux And Installing XP

Oct 31, 2010

I've tried ubuntu, and could never get my sound working with that, so I tried fedora and had the exact same problem there. After a few days of trying to figure it out I decided to give up because it was really getting ridiculous, and I just want to go back to windows where things simply work.

Now the problem is that when I boot from the windows XP install disc, it doesnt recognise anything on my harddrive and just gives me the blue screen when I press any key (after showing me the list of partitions on my harddrive, all of which are <UNKNOWN>). I'm not sure what the problem is but it must be something to do with the fact that I have linux installed, so is there any way I can completely remove Fedora and just start fresh with XP?The only 2 options that the XP install disc gives me are 1) Install windows XP (I get blue screen), or 2) Recover windows XP installation (I dont have xp installed anyway).

Likewise, booting from my Fedora install disc only gives me the options of installing or rescuing Fedora, but not the option of removing it.

Debian :: Installing / Removing - Packages Have Unmet Dependencies

Jun 1, 2011

I have an issue with packages. When I try to install any package then I receive error like this one below.
e.g. install Lynx:

Code:
# apt-get -f install lynx
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libperl5.10: Depends: perl-base (= 5.10.0-19lenny3) but 5.10.0-19lenny2 is to be installed
libsnmp15: Depends: libsnmp-base (>= 5.4.1~dfsg-12) but it is not going to be installed
lynx: Depends: lynx-cur (>= 2.8.7dev9-2.1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

So I decided to remove libperl5.10 which apparently mess. But its not that easy, just take a look:

Code:
# apt-get --purge remove libperl5.10
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
You might want to run 'apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libsnmp15: Depends: libsnmp-base (>= 5.4.1~dfsg-12) but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libperl5.10 (>= 5.10.0) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
...and now I don't know what to do ?

Ubuntu :: No User Permissions For /home After Installing & Removing Desktop

Aug 22, 2010

i'm having trouble with my fresh ubuntu installation (netbook edition). what i did was install xubuntu-desktop on top of that (wanted to check it out)..........didn't really work for me, so i removed it, hoping this would also remove the xubuntu desktop logon screen, which i didn't like. since this wasn't the case, i went to synaptics and removed all and everything with xubuntu in the title. NOTE: in the same session i turned off password requests for login - it could also matter, but i'm not sure, so i thought i'd mention it. the end result: three warning messages at logon

- Could not update ICEauthority file /home/dsikl/.ICEauthority

- There is a problem with the configuration server. (/usr/lib/bgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256)

- Nautilus could not create the following required folders: /home/dsikl/Desktop, /home/dsikl/.nautilus. Before running Nautilus, please create these folders, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create them.

i don't have access to my programs, administrator tools, /home folder, nothing.........the only thing that appears is the right part of the top bar (network, clock etc.), but also completely different.......it doesn't have my WLAN data anymore (can't access it), and all i have managed to get started was (accidentally) terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T, and from there I can use sudo, or even start nautilus, but can't access my own user, no matter what.........in the end i somehow managed to get to the point where it requested my passphrase, which i wanted to print out a day before it happened, but didn't and the screenshot is unfortunately within my /home folder. i tried reinstalling xubuntu-desktop, even ubuntu-desktop, i repaired broken packages from the recovery mode, tried everything i could to get the bugger going again, no success yet.

i would be happy to do a clean install, but there's one spreadsheet in the documents folder which i desperately need and i really need to get a hold of it before formating. could some sort of a rescue livecd help? i just need that one file. the easiest would be if i could somehow repair whatever packages may be broken, or manually (with apt-get or similar) reinstall the additional xubuntu packages i manually removed via synaptics, but i wouldn't have a clue what those were

Software :: Removing Disk From Centos 5?

May 18, 2011

We have a centos 5 instance running as a virtual machine on vsphere 4.0, which has a number of virtual disks presented to it. We need to remove these virtual disks from the system without rebooting it, but have had no luck searching VMware's KB or the internet for solutions to the issue. It seems we can strip the disk of all it's partition information, then remove it from the system in VMware, but /var/log/messages still reports scsi errors when running fdisk against the said disk. There is also a folder with the deleted disk's name (e.g. /sys/block/sdp), after the disk has been removed and the host bus has been rescanned. Is it even possible to completely remove disks from linux without a reboot?
