This seems pretty stupid. I just want to get rid of Evolution! Netbooks are cloud based machines, why was Evolution even included?! The same with OpenOffice.
I'm migrating data (music and videos mainly) from a NAS server that was being used as my iTuens Media Folder onto a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd like to get rid of all the ._DS files as well as other files that os x 10.4 has been creating such as duplicates of mp3 files but prefixed with "._".
The reason I'm keen to remove all of these files is because I stumbled across a corrupted ._DS_Store file that caused me all sorts of head aches and I don't want them causing any problems in linux.
I've used the search function in Nautilus to search for ._ but it returns no results, even when I'm searching in a directory that I know for certain has those files in it. I have 'View hidden files' selected.
what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
i tried to update my evolution from 2.30.? to 2.32.1 usning

Because the exchange plugin didn't work i uninstalled evolution and removed the ppa. Now when i try to install evolution from the software centre i get this: Package dependencies cannot be resolved This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Furthermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time. it asks me if I want to repair the catalog, i say yes.
When a user logs into my webmail application, it creates entries in a table on MySQL called "identities" which works great however once the user is deleted fro Linux with the "userdel -r" command, the data still sits in MySQL. My question is how I can I remove the table data from old users? It appears as show below:

I am using Fedora 15 x64 gnome 3. I removed Evolution Mail as I prefer to use Thunderbird... However after I removed it the computer got hung. I could not do anything so I did Power OFF and ON. Fedora booted and loaded alright until the Login Screen but when I try to login it says, "cannot login into Gnome Session" or something like that.
I suspect that when I removed Evolution Mail I something else and something important got removed. Now I cannot login at all.
I'm looking for a way to quickly remove all data/partitions/boot records from my hard drives while running linux (distribution is irelevant). There are lots of ways to do this that I know of, but they all have some problems. Here's a list of what I've tried/thought of already. The most obvious is fdisk: Simply delete all the partitions. This usually works just fine and is very quick, but there are times it just doesn't....I'm realy not sure what gets left behind...I remove the MBR as well..but whatever it is, it's in the way. Both of these approaches are great if you're selling the components and want to make it very difficult for anyone to recover data. The draw-back is they take so very long to run. I've got four 1.5 TB drives that I've been writing zeros to for 2 days now. If you thought watching grass grow or paint drying was boring. A hundred years ago or so, when I was doing tech support for Windows 95 users we used this nifty dos-based debug script to wipe the hard drive. It was sort-of a last resort thing, but it worked beautifully, most of the time. If the customer had already formated, fdisked, fdisk /mbr, reinstalled Windows, but still couldn't get the thing to work, this would clean the drive so you could do a fresh install.
Just in case someone wants this, I'll post it. To use: first boot to some type of DOS environment in which you have the program "debug".
I am using OpenSUSE 11 on my Intel Dual core. But, now i want to move to Centos5 and planing to remove SUSE and installing Centos5. But to be frank, i don't have any source to take the backup of my data. So, can i install only CentOS by removing SUSE without any data lose. Any procedure? If yes, then let me know the step by step guide so that i can go with Centos ASAP.
I've recently upgraded to 10.04. I'm trying to import my evolution data using the following instructions. Everything seems to work ok, but when I start evolution up, it continues to act as a new installation. What do I do?

If I need to append a set (or sets) of data to a file(or files) on remote hosts what is the best mechanism by which to do that? My first thought was ssh but the command syntax to append to a remote file isn't clear to me. Can anyone point me in the right direction here?
This is to request assistance or information as to why the evolution application will not accept the evolution-backup-tar.gz file from a previous version.
Situation: I upgraded by way of a fresh install from openSuSE 11.2 to 11.3 (GNOME desktop). Before upgrading, I produced the above mentioned backup file so that I could import all the mail, addresses etc. into the new application.
Result: it does not work. The process starts up seemingly normal but then simply sits there forever with the message "evolution shuts down" - but it does'nt. I have to kill it to stop it.
I am looking forward to a resolution since it would be a real pity if I lost the mail history.
I want to have 1-tier client/server architecture using ubuntu edition. I have no idea how to proceed. I have many doubts:1. Which Ubuntu edition will be used i.e. desktop or server? 2. Which manual/book(s)/paper will best describe to proceed further?
I have just manage to set up a number of computers using NComputing thin clients. I have set up 5 user accounts.People will be using these account randomly. So what I want is to set up everything as it should be and that to be the default setting. If users download files or make changes to the files these should be for the session. On startup/shutdown all the files and changes should be deleted this way the next user can find the machine clean. And also there is limited maintenance to be done.
Depending on whether I launched it with gnome do or the main menu I got a different 'version' of spotify, I could tell this because it had different searches remembered. I tried removing wine and spotify and gnome do via synaptic and completely remove and then the option to remove configuration files left over. I did a search and there were loads of wine files left so I just deleted. When I reinstalled wine, spotify and gnome do the same problem occurred.
Also Firefox started crashing ubuntu, just freezing it, so I tried to uninstall completely, but when I restarted it kept the same add ons and still crashed. So I uninstalled again and tried to delete all firefox folders but I can't work out how to do it as root.

I have just done a upgrade. And I get the message below. I am not sure that I don't have enough on my boot partition to install the new kernel.When I try and upgrade I get this message: There are unfinished transactions remaining. You might consider running yum-complete-transaction first to finish them.

Is it possible to remove the "ubuntuone-synchronized" emblem from files and folders that are being synchronized with Ubuntu One? Seeing the check mark on all my files and folders is just really annoying and distracts from the thumbnail preview that nautilus provides.I've tried going into folder properties -> emblems and de-selecting the emblem but it won't let me.
The rm command man pages discusses removing files or directories recursively. So what is meant by deleting a file or directory recursively? And what are some reasons for doing so?
Does anyone knows how to remove files from grub loader.BTW i found some tutorials but they don`t seem to work.I`ve tried Alt+F2 then I`ve edited this command: gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst but it doesn`t seem to work what do I do?
