General :: Open SuSe 11.1 - Cannot Copy Data From Second Disk
Jan 25, 2010
I have a PC with OpenSuse 11.1. Beside root there are two other users on the system. Now I have installed a new PC with OpenSuse 11.2. Only one user is set up until now. I installed the hard disk from OpenSuse 11.1 into the new PC on IDE Primary Slave, because I wanted to copy some files from the old system. OpenSuse 11.2 has mounted the old disk automatically in /media/disk and /media/disk-1. The problem is that I can't find any files or directories from the users. I could find only one file from root in /media/disk-1/root/Desktop. Why can't I see the files? Does it have anything to do with UID or SUID?

I've got a CentOS 5.4 box and the following disks connected:
# parted /dev/sda print
Model: ATA WDC WD1600BEKT-0 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 160GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 32.3kB 107MB 107MB primary ext3 boot
2 107MB 160GB 160GB primary lvm
# parted /dev/sdb print
Model: ATA WDC WD1200BEVT-0 (scsi)
Disk /dev/sdb: 120GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
1 32.3kB 107MB 107MB primary ext3 boot
2 107MB 120GB 120GB primary ext3 lvm
the OS, data and programs are on /dev/sda.
I'd like to copy the full directories and files to the newly added /dev/sdb wich has, as you can see, less space. Also note that /dev/sda has only about 3.6Gigs uses, so it will no doubt easily go into /dev/sdb. How can I do the full copy, and yet make /dev/sdb bootable just like /dev/sda (just as if it was cloned by Ghost)? I've checked dd, but AFAIK, it needs that both source and target devices be the same in size.

After I burn the DVD image, I put the disc on the computer and boot. The installation screen appears, the acknowledgement screen appears, then the installation checks my system and gives me a yast window with an error about something related to URLs and repositories. I cannot continue with the installation.
I am 100% new at this and thought it would be as easy as installing ubuntu (which I installed on a laptop and works flawlessly).I am trying distros and opensuse is compatible with my video card right out of the box apparently, so that's why I chose it for my desktop.Do I need to copy the dvd image to the hard disk of the computer I want to install opensuse on, and use the dvd to boot as well?

I'm not sure wether this is the correct forum for this, but this is the best place I can see at the moment, so I'll give it a try. Please redirect me if I'm mistaken.Running Suse 11.2, I have a RAID-5 device mounted, and a straigt disk. I want to copy data from the straigt disk to the array, using several methods: with Dolphin, with cpio. Copying runs for some time, sometimes one or some files are copied indeed, but after a short time (sometimes half a minute, sometimes 10 minutes or more) I get a

S.M.A.R.T.tells me my primary fedora drive has lots of bad blocks,so I ordered a used identical drive from ebay.I want to do the very basic process of making a full backup of my existing drive - so as to replace it with a more or less identical replacement. Logically identical - not necewsarily sector to sector identical.im not literate in unix and its children - and seem to find a plethora of descriptinos of how to do what I want to do. which is
1. format the drive - what you may call low level format - ie op sys independent.
2. create a partition system compatible with my existing disk.
3. copy everything from my existing disk to the new disk.
4. put existing disk on the shelf as a backup and start to use new disk.

I am trying to Install Open Suse 11.3 (burned as an ISO DVD) along with existing Win 2008 R2 OS. When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

OS: Debian unstable 32bit, kernel 2.6.32-2, grub 1.98 from late january 2010 (only have working net-access from work now, so I am grabbing information from memory). EXT3 and EXT4 support is compiled into the kernel along with chipset/scsi/sata support (not as modules), and I have tested to boot ext3 with it before proceeding. Prereq: my old disk started to have too much S.M.A.R.T errors, so I bought another one, put in a USB cabinet, added swap and ext4 partition/filesystem to it, and copied over all data from the old system to the new that was mounted at /dest using the command "find ./ -xdev -print0 | cpio -paV0 /dest". Swiched disks, so I now have the ext4 disk sitting at /dev/sda (partitions: sda1 => ext4, sda2 => swap), and booted into rescue-mode from cdrom, using /dev/sda1 as root with a shell on. After doing this, I performed the following commands:
mount --bind /dev /dest/dev
chroot /dest
modified the /etc/default/grub to instruct the kernel to boot using ext4, ran grub-install --recheck /dev/sda
ran update-grub to modify /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which looks as it should) After doing this, grub finds my partition and mounts it. It however stalls with the message: "warning: unable to open an initial console" and does nothing after this point. I have no ramdisk, but my old kernel booted fine from ext3 (and still does if I copy it to a ext3 partition), and since the ext4 support is compiled into the kernel - should I really need a ramdisk?

I've been using Excel from OpenOffice with moderate success for the last year. Now I've just tried to open a new spreadsheet and I'm suddenly getting a highly condensed view. The cells are about 1mm X 4mm. If I expand them by selecting and dragging, then try to copy data from another spreadsheet onto the new one, the data shrinks to the small scale -- unreadable.

I have a hard drive with a bad PCB board. It stays on when not under heavy load and it will restart if I copy too much data off it. So far I have had good luck doing folders under 500 MB in size if I copy one folder to my good hard drive, wait five minutes, copy another, etc.
If I mount the bad drive and try to copy a folder of several GBs in size it will start and then stop as the hard drive restarts. When I try to mount the drive again Linux says it can't read the superblock. I have several folders with over 30 GB of data in many different folders.
What I am looking for is a way of copying a folder in Linux such that the commands grab the whole folder in chunks with a timed break in-between.

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

Does anyone know if this is possible? I am attempting to copy one "master" hard drive to two or more "destination" drives. I hope to use the DD command because the master drive is encrypted and I need to make exact copies to "destination" drives.
I have used dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sda and it works for one-to-one operations. I tried dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sdc but the command skips the of=/dev/sdb and copies to sdc....I knew that was going to be too easy

I recently installed Linux to run a few Linux based tools on a disk images I have, and I can't seem to copy the disk image over to my ext3 partition.
The particular distibution I'm using is BackTrack 4 r2, which is Ubuntu based. I can't seem to find specifically which version of Ubuntu is being used. The disk image is 108GB. It is currently located on a NTFS partition on a SATA hard drive connected directly to the computer. The ext3 partition is located on a second SATA hard drive connected to the same computer. It has 200GB total. I do not remember exactly how much free space it had but "df -h" showed a lot more than 108GB. The computer has 4GB of RAM and I gave it 8GB of swap space.
At this point it has been running for more than 12 hours. This is far longer than I would expect it to take had I been copying the file under Windows. How ever I do not have much experience with Linux, so if it's supose to take this long please let me know. I am planning on letting it run until I wake up tomorrow.
"cp -v" hasn't been very verbose at all. The only sign I have that indicates the computer is still trying to do something is the HDD light on my chasis that has stayed lit this whole time.

In SLES 11 a freshly installed system when I try to get the man pages I get a weird error. /usr/bin/nroff: Can't create temp directory, exiting...
I know this error is just confusing because mktemp work just fine.
I read around by googling but I can only find people relating the problem without any solution.
I found this post which is cute, but I dont want to set my LD_LIBRARY_PATH has it is just a bad patch to solving the real issue.

Im relatively new to Linux - just started working with it this week - and Im having some trouble setting up NFS. We have a 12 computer cluster running open SUSE in our lab at school, and I am trying to troubleshoot the NFS system we have created. My basic question is this - I want to find the file that sets whether or not the NFS server and client processes run on setup. Google indicates that in most linux installations, these settings can be found in the /etc/rc.conf file. I cant find this file in open SUSE, so what Im trying to figure out is where I would find the equivalent commands in open SUSE. I am basically trying to find the lines highlighted in this: <http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/network-nfs.html> article are stored. I already know how to enable/disable the NFS server/client using YaST in the GUI, but I would prefer to find the file directly, as changing the settings in the GUI involves plugging a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into each of 12 boxes, and is very time consuming. I can change files straight from the terminal command line - much faster.
Additional background:
We are using NFS in two ways on our cluster - firstly, we have installed the software package (Fluent) on the host computer, and then setup the host to share this folder with the 11 slaves. To do this, we set the host as an NFS server, with the 11 slaves as NFS clients of this folder.
Secondly, we have setup working folders on each of the slaves that we would like to use to store data (each computer has a 1.5TB drive inside). To do this, we have set each of the slaves as an NFS server, sharing the working directory with the host computer, which we setup as an NFS client of each of these 11 working folders.
The problem that I am experiencing is that each of these two things works properly by itself, but when we try to use a computer as both an NFS server and an NFS client at the same time (albeit to different folders), neither works.Any thoughts on how to move forward in troubleshooting this? My current plan of attack is to unplug all of the slaves except for one from the network, and try to get a single slave to communicate properly with the host. Once I get the first slave running, I was going to add additional slaves one at a time until they were all working. Thoughts?

I have a broken DVD drive and no others available right now to burn a DVD iso to so I'd like to use a empty hard disk instead.
I've tried Unetbootin but that only copies a few megabytes of files - the rest of the image data in the ISO is ignored.
I have verified the ISO is valid and working with VirtualBox. It's MD5 hash is also as expected. But I need to boot at the real bios not an emulated one.
I've also tried things like:
sudo cat /disk/image.iso > /dev/sdb1
and that got "Permission denied" -
