CentOS 5 :: Removing Apache From Yum's DB
May 7, 2009
If I wanted to update Apache manually, instead of having Yum update it, how would I remove apache from Yum's database? What else would be involved if I download Apache source; and then configured, built, and installed it?

I am installing Big Brother on a CentOS 5.2 running the default Apache 2.2.3. When I try to access any web page I get the following error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /bb/ on this server. Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at fmsubbnix Port 80 So far I have:
1) Set the Directory options to FollowSymLinks
2) Verified all directory and file permissions are at 755
3) Set permissions temporarily to 777 and received same error so I am assuming the issue is in a config file somewhere
4) in hhtpd.conf verified <Files ~ "^.ht"> is correct
5) verified the "default" directory is correct (/var/www/html)
I have read and tried several ideas in posts listed on the web but to no avail and am at a loss as to what to look for next..

I am trying to solve a problem where Apache stats aren't displaying correctly in Munin. I've ran through quite a bit of checks and tests regarding Munin setup, but I think my issue is related to Apache, but my skill set there is lacking.
first, system info:

We have a centos 5 instance running as a virtual machine on vsphere 4.0, which has a number of virtual disks presented to it. We need to remove these virtual disks from the system without rebooting it, but have had no luck searching VMware's KB or the internet for solutions to the issue. It seems we can strip the disk of all it's partition information, then remove it from the system in VMware, but /var/log/messages still reports scsi errors when running fdisk against the said disk. There is also a folder with the deleted disk's name (e.g. /sys/block/sdp), after the disk has been removed and the host bus has been rescanned. Is it even possible to completely remove disks from linux without a reboot?

I just installed CentOS 5.4 using the Server option. Most of our systems are currently Novell SLES but I am trying to experiment a little and see if we can't switch to CentOS. Forum support here is awesome! Hopefully, someday soon I'll be able to lend a hand on the forums and help out new users as well. Anyways, back to my original post. Once I installed CentOS I run yum grouplist and get the following:
[Code].....
I am a bit confused. The Installed Groups represent what is installed? If so, how do I remove items like DNS Name Server, Dialup Networking Support, etc. Also, what is the easiest way to remove or view these items with and without a gui?

I am going to remove root access via SSH which seems fine but I don't know how to add a new user, do I have to create a group first or are there existing groups I can add a user to, and does it matter which group I add a user to if I want this user to have root access with sudo?

U have spent 4 days trying to configure my router thinking that it is my router that is not working but when I go to my dynamic dns or my static ip address it takes me to my admin router on the local computers.when I type httpd it says it cannot bind to port 0.0.0.0:80 i checked it is set up to listen to port 80 this is really confusing me i am beginning to think the people who built my server did not set it up properly if i go to localhost or 0.0.0.127 it goes to the apache default page fine.I have not changed anything since it wad installed except the centos 5 updates any ideas? When i login my password is root and the password is the default I have changed nothing else on the system as I still have no clue about it.Just to clarify on my router I have port 80 and port 443 set to my static ip address is this correct or should it be the eth0 Bcast ip address? Can anyone give me an idea of what i need to check? On my router I have set up port 80 and port 443 and dynamic dns and static ip address.Sorry I am totally new to linux never used it before would be nice if anyone has any ideas how i can proceed with this.

I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

WebServer: Apache (2.19)
Mod Mono (1.9)
DB server: MySql
Some Configuration parameters:
Max Connection number: 200
When the site receives more than 50 simultaneous connections, it becomes unreachable even thought Apache seems to work. I attach:
- Apache server status when the service falls down
- Apache configuration file

I am trying to setup a simple Linux Virtual System (LVS). The 1st layer is two Virtual Servers, the 2nd layer is two Real Servers and the 3rd layer is one PostgreSQL Server. All data is on the third layer (PostgreSQL). The Apache Server is running on the 2nd layer but it is supposed to retrieve data (Folders) from the 3rd layer servers (PostgreSQL). I like to setup NFS server on the 3rd layer and NFS client on the 2nd (Apache) layer. I can't figure out how to do it! I have searched the Internet with no luck. I am sure many people on the CentOS community have done it. Can somebody point me to a Howto.. or email me a procedure they have.

Or rather I can't reach it when I try to reach it in my web browser, I get a "network link timed out" error.I start it by issueing "/usr/sbin/apachectl -k start", and i know its running b/c i can see it in the process list "ps auxf".The request isn't showing up in httpd's access_log, which lead me to think this is a SELinux issue, perhaps not allowing httpd to bind to port 80, idk.I'm remotely administering this machine from the command line

I've installed a server (CentOS5.2) - and I need a new(er) PHP, so, I get me one. This is what I did:
- unzipped the bundle in the root's home
- of course, I entered the folder
- entered "./configure"
- entered "make" - the compile didn't come back with errors
- entered "make test" - there was a _possible_ fail...
- entered "make install"
I noticed there's nothing in the /libs, where I'd expect a module (lib5php5.so) to exist. there is one, but it belongs to the older PHP. It's located in ets/httpd/modules (a link BTW - but I think that's normal). At the console I type:
"which php" and get a path to PHP /usr/local/bin/php
"php --version" and get 5.2.8 and some extra info
in the server I entered "<?php phpinfo(); .>" in a PHP page, as I call that page, I get ... 5.1.6 as version.
Of course, I suspect Apache to have the OLD PHP in its config, (the old lib5php.so) and that I may have to overwrite the old one with the newly compiled one, if I had it. I ran a locate on the system, but no other lib5php.so files exist. Where did I loose track?

I'm attempting the lovely task of uninstalling Apache 2.2 and installing Apache 2.0 on CentOS 5. This is because of my original task of installing RSA web agent which only works with Apache 2.0. I also am not allowed to just install CentOS 4. I uninstalled Apache 2.2. Attempted to install Apache 2.0 (with rpm) and got multiple dependency errors. I installed the dependencies (and sometimes their dependencies including a little dance around some circular dependencies). Then I installed Apache 2.0 with no errors. However Apache failed to start.
Here is the error:
httpd: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libaprutil-0.so.0: undefined symbol: gdbm_errno.
Please don't tell me it "seems like you're missing your gdbm libraries." I'm not. I'm assuming I'm having a version incompatibility issue between gdbm and libaprutil. I just don't know what version of which I need to make Apache 2.0 happy. I tried uninstalling gdbm and installing an older version but I still have the same problem. Another option is to uninstall my openldap package (2.3.13-2) which I just installed and install an older version of that but again don't know which version is right.

I have a web server with the specs below and my apache server is being a hog using all my RAM 7gigs or 8gigs of ram. When there is a rush of traffic at once my whole server crashes and I have to reboot apache. The way my site is set up I have a tube script and I use the tube script to host videos on my forum I have 1000 videos on the tube script. I brought a bigger server and more ram because of the down time I been having . I am really trying to figure out why its crashing and using so much ram. I installed eAccelerator didn't seem to help with the apache server.

I saw many people were talking about how to optimize apache and mysql here and also in other forums and blogs. I am currently hosting some sites and some IRCD processes (a tiny network)in a dedicated server with spec:
Quote:
Intel Dual Core 1.6GHz E1200
1GB RAM
160 HDD
10Mbits port
We got about 30,000 to 40,000 page views per day. I would like to ask people here about the opinion of apache and mysql optimization based on this server spec and current number of page view.

I have Centos 5.4 installed on my server. Everything works perfect, however sometimes apache does not work properly. When I write my domain to browser it tries to reach the site, however it can't get any result. (There is no "browser couldn't find" error). The browser just tries to get the content.
When I login to my server with ssh using my domain name, there is no problem. (Named works.) When I give the "service httpd restart" command the problem disappears.I looked at httpd log files but there wasn't any problem at that time.I use the API's of the Facebook and Twitter, so there are many Curl requests are made with PHP. Could that be the reason?

It appears the liblphp.so and liblpssl.so files that have been added to /usr/local/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20060613/ and the php.ini are 32 bit libraries. This is preventing them from loading as PHP and it's other modules are all built as 64 bit libraries. To resolve this error, I would recommend re-building the libraries as 64bit. Most likely this can be done using Easyapache to re-build PHP (and Apache) to support these modules. Additionally, libcrypto and libssl are on the server in /usr/lib/ folder. However, they are 64bit libraries which may not work on the 32bit .so files you have provided.
