Software :: Removing Disk From Centos 5?

We have a centos 5 instance running as a virtual machine on vsphere 4.0, which has a number of virtual disks presented to it. We need to remove these virtual disks from the system without rebooting it, but have had no luck searching VMware's KB or the internet for solutions to the issue. It seems we can strip the disk of all it's partition information, then remove it from the system in VMware, but /var/log/messages still reports scsi errors when running fdisk against the said disk. There is also a folder with the deleted disk's name (e.g. /sys/block/sdp), after the disk has been removed and the host bus has been rescanned. Is it even possible to completely remove disks from linux without a reboot?

when it comes to disk and volume management in linux, I'm attempting to install a new 1TB disk to remove the current 250GB disk, the system also has a 37GB disk.
What I did was that I added to new 1TB disk to the system with the LVM tool, I added it with a mountpoint of /storage2. Then I removed the old disk with the LVM tool and moved it's data to the remaining disks (the 37GB and the new 1TB) with the LVM tool.
Everything looks ok so far.
When I reboot with the old 250GB disk still in the system it's all fine. But when I remove it, the system won't reboot. I get to the point of where the fedora screen usually turns up.
The old disk had 2 partitions, the new one has only one, I'm starting to think there's something in there causing the issue? Can't load that big partion at boot or something?
If I'm missing to fill in some details, just ask and I'll try to answere. I now has the old disk back in the system to be able to boot.

I had a 400GB hard drive fail on me today that was part of an lvm2 logical volume made up of it and 3x1TB hard drives. I did a partial mount of the lv to assess the damage, and it wasn't bad. All the important stuff is either on the other disks or backed up. So, I want to reduce the lv and remove this disk from the vg.

my computer screwed up and the MBR or GRUB was screwed up, so I got my Windows 7 repair disk and repaired the MBR. Then I needed grub back so I could boot into Ubuntu so I went and looked for something to just install grub and found this Auto Super GRUB Disk (ASGD) thing. So I installed it and then it appeared on the windows boot manager menu when I started up and I went into it and installed grub again. Then when I booted back into windows, it asked me if I wanted to remove ASGD and I clicked yes. Ever since, the ASGD entry has not been removed from my boot menu for some stupid reason. What happens is the computer starts and goes into GRUB which is what I want and then if I go into Windows 7, it will then come up with another menu asking whether to boot into Windows 7 or the ASGD, even though ASGD isn't there anymore. I can still boot into windows, but this extra menu that comes up every time is starting to **** me off. I've tried EasyBCD and the entry does not come up on there.

I've got an 8-disk raid-5 setup, and one of the disks failed. I shut the system down, replaced it, and powered the box back on again. Then, I made a catastrophic mistake; I 'failed' and removed the wrong disk (should have been sdj1, and I typed sdk1 by accident). I tried to re-add sdk1 back to the raid array, but it got listed as 'spare'. My raid array is off-line, since I now have 2 disks unavailable.
I know that the data still exists on sdk1, is there any way I can get the raid array to recognise the fact that it's a valid part of the array, and not a spare disk? At least if I can do that, I'll have a degraded but accessible array, and then I can rebuild the array on the properly replaced disk.

There is a disk 500 gb, it is broken on /boot and on /root and on /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Whether prompt it is possible to redistribute a disk without loss of data namely it is necessary to make/boot and two equivalent on disk volume.

I just installed CentOS 5.4 using the Server option. Most of our systems are currently Novell SLES but I am trying to experiment a little and see if we can't switch to CentOS. Forum support here is awesome! Hopefully, someday soon I'll be able to lend a hand on the forums and help out new users as well. Anyways, back to my original post. But to be frank, i don't have any source to take the backup of my data. So, can i install only CentOS by removing SUSE without any data lose. Any procedure? I know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

what i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2, and the installation ran out of disk space after running for about 2 hours.I checked the FAQ, and it said 1.2 GB. The disk is 3 GB. The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space.The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

These should be my last pleas for help with regard to Fedora 13. I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

I am having new hardware and IDE driver for that hardware as drive disk image (it8213_centos53.img). CentOS 5.3 installation is working fine with drive disk image at USB and CentOS 5.3 at DVD. Our application uses CentOS 5.3 and we build a custom kick-start ISO for installations. Using that ISO client is going to install on all hardware boxes.
Note while installing :
a) No network connection is avalible.
b) No USB isavalible.
c) No floppy is avalible.
d) Only single CD-ROM is avalible.
So, is it possible to build single custom kick-start CentOS 5.3 ISO which contains dirve disk image and entire installation will be done using that image. If so please let me know the steps to build it.

I need to read information from SUN hard disks which are about a decade old. My CentOS 5.6 mount command comes from util-linux 2.13-pre7."mount -t ufs -o ufstype=sun /dev/sdb2 /New" reports "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ufs'", though its man page describes such settings.How could I read an external UltraSCSI hard disk (yes: high pitch noise and only 9 GB capacity) on a current CentOS? I have seen that is possible to boot from a USB stick and use a USB memory as hard drive.I have a server enable to hold 6 sata drives 3.5", But I want to use the 6 drives and make a Raid-5 setup for backups 5 -1 spare. /boot cannot be on a raid-5 level 0 or 1. But I want to have redundancy for my OS, them I can install Centos on a Raid-1 using 2 disk, which let me only 4 for the raid 5. I will run a backup I want to have a lot of space.
Using 4 disk for raid-5 2 TB I will have 6TB no spare, no spare is not a good option at least I will prefer 1 spare.Well, I was thinking, the server MoBo have USB support, if I open the box I can see the small entrances, If Centos let me installed on a USB memory drive, can I trust a USB memory stick?t night with bacula.

I'm trying to create several Centos virtual machines to run Cpanel servers on each. Centos 5 looks good due to bundled Xen. Not sure whether to go for 64 bit version of Centos 5 and run some of the Apps as 32 bit and a few as 64. The h/w is a Dell poweredge R710 with dual 2.26 GHz quad core Xeon procs, 5.86 GT/s 24GB ram memory speed 1067 MHz. Raid with perc 6/i.
I burned the Centos 5 iso onto cd-rw but my lap top and the new dell won't boot from it. I viewed the readme file which seems to suggest burning "boot.iso" on its own but that doesn't work either. A boot menu on the Dell has an option to "Deploy" an O/S. Do I need that or can't I simply boot from cd-rw? I used Nero to burn the cds. I asked Nero if any special box needs to be ticked to write a bootable image and they said no.

What I'm doing is attempting to create a minimalized CentOS which only installs the base components.
I decided that I'd install everything I need, then I did a ..
rpm -qa > installed-packages
I think used this new file to move all the RPMs that were used during the installation from ~/CentOS/disk/CentOS/ to ~/CentOS/graveyard
[root@localhost CentOS]# cat installed-rpms-no-vers | while read file; do mv disk/CentOS/${file}* ~/CentOS/graveyard/ ;done

I am very new to centos and just setting up my disk. I have a dell 1850 with 2 69GB disks. When I get to this screen ( shown below) the disc configuration shows two discs "SDA2" and "69774MB". What I am wondering is this confuration ok. I assume the SDA2 is my secondary disk? Why is it using the secondardy disc and not the primary SDA1?

But it's size shows in Nautilus is 223.1 MB.
and in the Archive Mounter selecting all files/folders shows
Totaling 654 items and 622.1 MB.
Did got everything of Disk-1 ?

I am wondering if I can set diskquota on a nfs mount, instead of where the folder actually located.
e.g.
HOST1 - /dev/sdb1 /home
exports /home to HOST2
HOST2 - HOST1:/home /home
set quota from HOST2 for /home
Is this possible? I have not tried it, I wonder if anyone tried it.
