Jul 23, 2011what is the configuration file responsible for the X system !!! i did not have /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and the X server was pretty good and i can open it through "startx" command.i created xorg.config by "xorgsetup" program but i could not feel any change. i wanna reconfigure my display driver to be sure it's functioning at maximum performance.

Jun 17, 2010Looking for a newb-type step by step process for configuring ubuntu to 1) recognize both the onboard video card as well as the PCI graphics card and 2) how to set up three displays with separate desktops (able to mouse-over from screen to screen). So far the 20+ hours searching online has yielded excessively complex instructions, inappropriate instructions, or ancient posts. Is this config even possible? Again, I am learning so the instructions need to be very deliberate. PNY GeForce FX 5200 PCI 256 MB 2 Port VGA + S-Video Graphics Card VCGFX522PEB and an onboard display apdapter (Intel P4 Chipset 845GV).

I can't configure the monitor. and the display.
I've tried with both the built in display configure and the Nvidia one. Can't choose 1600x900 on either one.
I either can't see all the display on the monitor, or it takes on some weird panning mode and looks like the display is about 2500x1500 or something.
Here's the xorg.conf file. Clearly it does not see the new monitor and the modes are wrong. These settings are for the previous monitor. How Can I fix this so that my display works properly? Thanks.

May 18, 2011It functions perfectly well, but the Files & Folders object has as a feature a 'recent' section which displays recently opened files. This is much the same as a menu object available in Gnome, except with the latter you could clear recent files for security or privacy purposes - you cannot do this in Unit.I have found that if you drag a file from the 'recent' section in the Unity Files & Folders object to Trash it doesn't just delete the shortcut - it deletes the target as well.
It is not at all clear if and how you can configure the File & Folders and the Applications objects to display what you want rather than the default, and the inability to quickly and safely clear recently opened items is something I think is in need of a fix.

Jun 22, 2011At work, we have a linux machine which is shared among the members of my team. Each of us runs an XServer on our desktop, which allows us to launch XClients (xterm, debuggers, etc) on the linux machine.We all are using X11 forwarding feature with SSH. I personally run all shell sessions behind screen because I like to be able to detach if needed. We've seen issues when the $DISPLAY variable gets crossed between different users. Let me outline a series of events:
1. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
2. user1 launches a screen
3. user1 loses connection to linux machine (eg. desktop reboot)
4. user2 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:10.0
5. user1 logs in and $DISPLAY = localhost:11.0
6. user1 resumes screen from previous login, but in this screen $DISPLAY=localhost:10.0.
7. user1's X apps get displayed on user2's desktop!
I assume someone must of encountered this before. Are there any known solutions? Is there a way to configure screen, so that when a session is resumed it inherits the $DISPLAY?
CentOS 5 Hardware :: Fresh Install Of Centos Doesnt Display On Whole Screen?
Jun 8, 2009i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

Aug 10, 2010How do I know what sound system my Centos 5.5 install is using and how would I configure which soundcard output to use? I want to use the digital coax output from my M-Audio PCI soundcard, which appears to be detected and loaded. When I launch MPD, it autodetects an alsa sound system, but programs like alsamixer don't exist and I can't hear any sound out of the digital coax output. I haven't checked the 3.5mm stereo out yet.A little confused as to which documentation to be looking at at this point.

Feb 16, 2010I've just installed OpenSUSE 11.2 on a new machine. Because I was still using another machine as my main box while building the new one, the monitor attached when it was installed has a resolution of 1280x1024 @ 77Hz. I've now moved it to be my main machine and the monitor is a widescreen 1680x1050 @ 60Hz model. When I boot it normally the screen fails to come up - even GDM doesn't show. If I boot in failsafe mode the system comes up fine, but in 1280x1024 mode. The 'Configure display settings' icon shows the monitor as 'Unknown'. Couple of things I tried:
1) Switched to runlevel 2 and logged in as root. Ran Xorg -configure and looked at the xorg.conf.new that was installed, but it just had generic info for the monitor:

2) While still in runlevel 2 and logged in as root I did a startx. This brought up the X display in 1680x1050 ok, and clicking on the 'Configure display settings' icon showed it had correctly identified my monitor and had set the size and frequency correctly.
3) Given the results of (2), I then tried logging in as myself in runlevel 2, did startx again, but this time the display failed to come up again.

Dec 15, 2009I am new to this forum. I am a both rhel5 and fedora user.I can not configure my Samsung syncmaster 632nw monitor to display full screen at 1360X768.There is huge blank space on left and right portion of the monitor.The maximun resolution is 1024*768 and minimum is 640*480.
I have tried many times to solve it using xorg.conf but still unable to do it.

Dec 29, 2009I am brand new to this forum! I have spent some time on other Linux forums but based on my usage of CentOS I figured that it would be best to come straight to the pros. I've been using CentOS for a while now, mostly as a web server. Actually I use it as the base and installed Parallels Plesk Control Panel.
Anyway I want to setup a VPN and so far I haven't found any real solid documentation on how to do that! Yes I could install DAG/RPM Forge but what I really want to know how to do it from scratch. What I mean by scratch is that I want to download the tar.gz package from openvpn.net and then build it as required. I don't know much about building or compiling a package so that is why I have come here for help! I am guessing that I need to compile openVPN with openSSL and probably a few other packages... I could use openSWAN but I don't want to.

May 16, 2010I just installed fedora 12. during the installation, i used a different monitor (as when i used the one that i want to use with the system, not all of the page displayed - so i could not click on the buttons) . now it only works with the display that i temporarily connected.
i want to use the system with a sony tv via hdmi. the system dual boots, and the tv works with windows 7 (at 1280*720, 60Hz, "generic PnP monitor").
when i try to boot fedora with the TV as the display, the TV is showing stuff right up until the login screen appears (X starts, I guess). then the TV loses the input.
I can SSH into the system with the TV connected, or use it normally with a temporary monitor. I have no experience of successfully configuring HAL or X. how should I go about it?

Apr 11, 2009I have the bar at the top configured to display the time but it is displaying 12 hours out.For example, it's now 16:49 but the time is displaying as 06:49. If I click on Adjust Date & Time it has the correct time in there and it is configured to display 24-hour format and is in the correct time zone. If I switch to 12-hour format it displays 6:49 AM which is clearly incorrect.I can't fix it because it thinks the time is correct when I try to change it.

Feb 5, 2010A couple of months ago I (naively) installed Python 2.6.2 to my system without using an RPM. Then recently I tried to run the Display panel (/usr/bin/system-config-display) and it never opened.I then used it from the command line and after realizing it was a Python problem I spent some time trying to eliminate the python conflict by removing 2.6 and reinstalling all the python related RPMs from URL..Searching online one of the things I have found is to recompile python with UCS4 support though that seems to go against the idea of using an rpm as I understand it and I would assume it has been compiled as needed for CentOS.

I installed freetype as well
Most images display fine on web pages for accounts on the server, however, .gif images do not display.All I get is an image placeholder.
.png are fine
.jpg are fine
I have not tested all the possible varieties of images, but .gif I know is not displaying.I am sure its some kind of RPM I am missing or a configuration problem.

Nov 29, 2010I am running Centos 5.5 X86_64 and recently after updating my server, I am having problem loading gnome. When the server boots, and begins to bring up the login screen theme, I get an error that states "Could not recognize the image file format for /usr/share/gdm/themes/TreeFlower/background.png"I am able to login after clicking ok to this message, and using the "simplistic" login manager. But when the users desktop loads, there are several errors pertaining to "unsupported image format" and none of the icons are displaying correctly. They are just the default "curvy page" icon for an unassociated file type. Some of the icons do not even show up at all.
Another thing I noticed wierd is that when I try to view a png, nothing happens. When I try to open one using gimp, I get an "unsupported file type" error. When I tried to click on the "add/remove software" button I get prompted for root pass, but nothing happens.
