CentOS 5 :: Time Display Is 12 Hours Out?
Apr 11, 2009
I have the bar at the top configured to display the time but it is displaying 12 hours out.For example, it's now 16:49 but the time is displaying as 06:49. If I click on Adjust Date & Time it has the correct time in there and it is configured to display 24-hour format and is in the correct time zone. If I switch to 12-hour format it displays 6:49 AM which is clearly incorrect.I can't fix it because it thinks the time is correct when I try to change it.

I have an Asus laptop with both Win7 and Fedora. Whenever I change the time in Fedora to the correct time and reboot into W7 the W7 time is messed up - about 7 hours earlier. If I set W7's time to the correct time and then reboot to Fedora, Fedora's time is then 7 hours early. For some reason I can't get both OS's to agree it's the same time.

A few hours ago, I ran "pacman -Syu" to update, and soon after it was finished the power went out for a few seconds, turning off my computer without properly shutting down. When I started it, the time was wrong (or maybe the time zone, since the minute is correct). It looks like it's exactly 4 hours behind (right now it's 18:53 here, but the date command says 14:53). Also, I have ntpd running, in case that matters.

Does someone have an average time on how long it takes for a DVD to AVI session should take? I have been converting some DVD to AVI and on a mac it takes roughly 20 minutes to finish, on Debian it takes over 2 hours, same settings, same options bitrate resolution etc. I cant see how going from 18x to 16x increases the time 2+ hours. So there must be somethinbg I am missing.Or if there is a better DVD to AVI ripping software available please share it.

I have a switch tray on my computer and I installed opensuse in one of the hard drives that I have but as I switch between the windows hard drive and opensuse the time changes all the time. For example it's 10pm right now and if I switch the hard drive to opensuse the time automatically gets adjusted 4 hours back and then I fix it and when I switch back to my windows hard drive the time goes forward 4 hours. I check both region settings and they are both set to NY Eastern time. Why is it doing this?

My wife and I have:
iPhone 16GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
iPhone 32GB 3GS on iOS 4.2.1 (not jailbroken)
We're running Ubuntu 10.10 and syncing our phones with Rhythmbox 0.13.1. It's painfully slow and skips songs sometimes. For 1500 songs, it's taking up to 5 hours. This is insane. I updated my apt sources and can mount our phones just fine. Syncing slowly is the only issue. I've read a ton of other reads about iPods having this issue as well, but not only were those issues never resolved by I haven't seen one with the actual iPhone.

I am trying to install CentOS 5.2, and the installation ran out of disk space after running for about 2 hours.I checked the FAQ, and it said 1.2 GB. The disk is 3 GB. The default install was selected, and I think that it checks for sufficient available disk space before installing. Still, it ran for quite a while before announcing that it was out of disk space. The Installation Guide is not very helpful, since there is a blank page where the disk space requirement is supposed to be. I just picked the default installation. A search of the forums on "not enough disk space" did not return much.

I'm looking for a program that will digitally display the time in three different cities - all showing at once. I don't care if it is a panel applet or stand-alone. I'm using Suse 11.3 and Gnome.

I am running a LAMP system with CentOS 5.4.The clock just automatically shifted backwards by 19 hours and 30 minutes crippling some of my reports and probably damaging something else along the way.The router supplying IP to this server is a DD-WRT and shows proper time.By the way what does that mean? time drifted by that 33.667 ms?

I have a problem with network on centos, after i restart the server it works for few hours/couple days, and the network is dropped. - no errors in the log, only that "Network is unreachable" I do 'service network restart' comes back on- directadmin, dns, awbs- everything works good, but only for few hours(never longer then couple days), and then it is dropped again. I searched many forums, and on one them someone wrote that it is because that static IP was used on the same network by other machine. I had a different server running with that ip on my network before, but it was few weeks ago, and there is no other server connected to the network right now (I have one desktop connected with dynamic ip, and it has no problem), and i still have the same problem.
I was suggested to set a cron jobs to restart network every few hours- i thing that is not a solution. Does anyone have any idea what could be a problem? Anyone had similar problems? What could be the reasons for the network to be dropped after few hours? Here is latest 'dmesg' output after losing network:
[root@server ~]# dmesg

I noticed that every, say, 5 times I boot CentOS 5.4, a find search is initiated that takes several hours.
For example:
find . -name rd=rmdir -print
I'm not sure if it's related, but, I do have a "alias rd=rmdir" in my .aliases. Would changing it to "alias rd=/bin/rmdir" avoid this problem? I'm using zsh. Is this search necessary?

I have a Cent OS dedicated server, not sure what version though as I'm new to Linux. How do I find out what version I have? Is there an anti virus or security package that I can install on my server which can use Cron Jobs to do a scan every 12 hours.

In the right upper corner of your screen, you can see if you have a network connection or not. Most of the time I do not have one according to Networkmanager (?).So I have to enable my wired connection manually.I already tried a lot to change my settings so I would have a network connection at boot, but it doesn't seem to work....Firefox is in Offline modus when I logon..

I am hosting two Virtual Servers both running Centos 5.3 on a host machine also running the same OS. The VM software in use is Xen, as supplied with the OS.The host machine's time and date is fine, however both Virtual Servers are running ahead of real time consitantly.Running /etc/init.d/ntpd restart will resolve the issue however one of these is running MailScanner and when the time suddenly goes backwards, sometimes by as much as an hour, it stops working properly.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ie AMD Athlon x64 with 15 GB for (root) partition and 2 gb for Swap Space, with 1.2 GB of RAM,but after the successful installation its not displaying the GRUB immediately, taking 90-270 seconds to display? What might be the reason.? I have windows XP on my pc,even for booting into Win XP, one needs the GRUB display, its taking almost 90-180 Seconds to display the GRUB(sometimes more than that). But this thing never used to happen in previous versions of Ubuntu? Why only for this specific Ubuntu 9.10?

After much too often wondering "hey, when did I actually start this time-consuming command?", I'm considering adding a timestamp to my bash prompt. My first try was simple: PS1="(A) $PS1" which gives a display like:(16:58) exscape ~ #
However, the problem with that approach is that it displays the time when the line was written, not when the command on it was executed. So, if I run "ls" at 16:58, and get a new prompt "(16:58) ..." and then run the next command 2 hours later, it'll look like this:(16:58) exscape ~ # new-commandI of course want the line to display the time when the command was actually run, not when the prompt appeared.

Is there a way for the time at the top of the screen to display seconds as well as the date ?
My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?
Rite now my clock reads: tue 3:50 pm...Is there a way i can make it read: tue, aug 20, 2011 3:50:45 pm

I'm using ubuntu Maverick on a Dell 1545 and I'm pretty much a newbie to ubuntu. Most of the things have been fine so far, I just plugged it into a proxyless internet connection and adjusted my location for time zone (I've been using a porxy server previously for internet which didn't allow changes in location and time zone work) and since then that calendar has moved out of the scope on the top right corner of my screen and I'm unable to move it.

i didnt find a solution to a display problem im having. my server mobo is an asus k8n-dre with built in video. after the install(using built in video) the screen dosnt display fully as in black sections on the left and top of the screen. from the searching i did i found something about an "xrandr" command that would let me change the video settings but it didnt do anything with the black areas when i tried it. i also have a nvidia geforce 9500gt video card so i changed the jumper to boot from it and tried again. the black sections are still there but the centos display covers much more of the screen now. theres still about a third of an inch gap on the left hand side and about 1/4 of an inch on the top. ive also tried updating the software to see if it may be a driver issue but no luck. anyone know how or if it can fit to full sceen? the screen displays up to 1440x900 if im not mistaken but with the built in video it gave me lots of display options including the 1440x900. after changing to the nvidia card it only shows 800x600 and 640x480.

I have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.
