While installing some new packages,i intended to delete /usr/lib/xxx/* by using ../../../*. But i missed one slash (../../*) .Due to that, all the regular files in usr/lib were deleted. Now i can boot only in recovery mode.I re-installed some libraries using wget. But for "apt-get upgarde", it is saying ,dependency on synaptic. And the loop goes like never ending..Is their any way to reinstall the lib files in /usr/lib/?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Folder Gets Deleted On Logout Or Login

Mar 18, 2011

Ubuntu 10.04. Also have Kubuntu desktop installed. Usually use Ubuntu. Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

So, created the ~/Desktop folder. Changed the line in user-dirs.dir to read XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop". Log out. Log back in. Result:

Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

Logged into the KDE desktop. It complains that the ~/Desktop folder does not exist. Shows nothing on the desktop. Create the ~/Desktop folder. Set KDE to use the ~/Desktop folder. Check .config/user-dirs.dir and make sure that the Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop" line is in. Everything is set. Log out.

Log in to Ubuntu. Result:
Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"

This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login / After Couple Seconds Returned To The Login Splash Screen?

Oct 10, 2010

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

CentOS 5 :: Unable To Recover Deleted Files From Ext3 Partition?

Feb 10, 2011

I am using CentOS 5.5.I suppose this is an oft repeated question. I accidentally deleted, using rm command, 2 wmv files. The files were in a single ext3 1Tb drive, with just 1 partition --- the ext3 one. Each file is 600 - 800mb. The 1Tb drive has only about 20Gb data.Immediately after deleting the files i unmounted the drive (/dev/sdc1). Thereafter i searched the the net and came to know of the recovery tools foremost and photorec. I have installed both of them. I am currently running both of them as root --- foremost is just showing a lot of * signs on the terminal and photorec has managed to find some txt and png files --- but no wmv.For foremost i used: /usr/sbin/foremost -t wmv -i /dev/sdc1For photorec i followed some instructions available on the web.

In the meantime, based on some post on the net i ran debugfs as root, then cd into the directory where the files were deleted. Then on typing ls -d i managed to get the inodes of the 2 deleted files and the names of the deleted files are also correct. The instructions on the net http://www.theavidcoder.com/?p=3 tell me to run fsstat and dls both of which i am unable to find in /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. So i am unable to proceed further.

Debian Hardware :: Unable To Login To IMac G4 - Graphical Login?

Sep 30, 2015

I have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:

[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.

Last line is something along the lines of:

fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac

And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.

Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?

This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.

Ubuntu :: Deleted Files On USB Drive Not Actually Deleted?

Jun 7, 2010

I searched the forum with various terms and didn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a common and/or newbie problem. It seems that when I have a USB driveplugged in to switch the files around, those that I delete are still taking up space. I first noticed it with a Chinese MP3 player and thought it was the player being crappy. I could still play all the songs that were supposedly gone. Today, I noticed it with a little thumb drive that I've had for years. I plugged it into my husband's computer running winXP, and the files showed up in a weird, unusable form. I was able to delete them for real.

1. Is this common to you guys or just me alone?

2. What are the causes?

3.Does Wubi play a role in causing this login problem since I install Ubuntu thru Wubi?

4. What are other solutions in solvng this login problem?

This doesn't happen if I log in without GUI (using alt+ctrl+f1 (or any other function key but 7).

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login - No Password Set?

Apr 10, 2011

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot on a Windows Vista laptop. Usually when I've installed Ubuntu on other machines it's asked me to set a user name and password. In this instance, it's automatically taken the same user name as is used to login on Windows. When I try and log in on Ubuntu, it comes up with th user name from Windows, busks for a password. On Windows, there's no password set, so I don't know what to put.I've tried things like 'password' and 'Password' and the likes. I also tried going onWindows and adding a password there to see if Ubuntu would find it, but no such luck.

Ubuntu :: User Unable To Login

May 2, 2011

After my last upgrade from 10.? to 10? my users' (kids) were unable to login. I tried to fix it and could not find anything wrong. Now I have upgraded to 11.? and the problem persists. The users could still login by selecting an older version at the prompt during boot up.

I deleted there account and reinstall the user and still they could not login. I added a completely new test user and could not log that one in either. The system excepts the password, waits a several seconds, then the mouse curser changes to the spinning circle. The hard drive lights flash for many seconds then eventually the hard drive stops flashing. I have let it sit a long time and it never continues. Tonight I came home tried to login and it is doing the same thing to me tonight. I ran fix packages, fix grub and everything else I could think of and could not log in.

Finally I logged in to the oldest version on there and it let me in.? The screens are all the same but the desk top is entirely different? I have never seen one like this. I think its like the new version of fire fox, with every thing moved around. Icons down the side. Menu's hidden at the top? I can probably get used to that but I need to able to login, and my user's to login?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Pass The Login Screen

Feb 17, 2010

I have done a clean intall of Ubuntu 9.10 (K. Koala). Got everything up and working with 2 users, me with full privelleges and my son with a ltd account. Everything was working well so I moved the PC to my sons room, connected it to his TV and was able to log in as both users.

I changed the display settings on his account as when using the 1360 x 768 (16:9) setting the top bar and the last icons on the screen weren't visable, the desktop also started about 2inches from the left hand side of the screen, so changed them to 800 x 600 and whole desktop visable.

I switched user and did the same to my desktop. Then switched the pc off. I come back to it now, boot it up, get to the user/password screen, select me and enter my password, the screen flickers, little Ubuntu drum roll, and I return to the login screen. So I try my sons login, same result. No password authenticaion message, so I guess this isn't the issue. Surley just changing display settings can't have this effect?

Ubuntu :: Odd Screen Display - Unable To Login (10.04 LTS)

May 5, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and at first, everything was just fine. This issue came about yesterday, as far as I know, while my screen was locked. The login screen now displays only half of the original login screen (left side) and the other half (right side) is an odd view of a black background with a white box in the center (see this mock up). Another note of interest is that the right side pans as I move the mouse around the screen, as if the right-side view were a second view port to the login screen without displaying it properly.

I am not able to log in whatsoever. An incorrect password results in the standard error message. A correct password results in a temporary black screen, as if to load to the desktop, but then redisplays the login screen as if I hadn't logged in at all. I'm not sure where to begin, as I cannot login to run any commands and the grub menu does not give options to start in safe mode--it just loads directly to the latest instance of Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login/sessions Missing

Jun 12, 2010

Yesterday, after I logged out of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx), I was unable to log back in. When I enter my password the screen goes blank for a second and then it returns to the login menu. Also, I have noticed that there are no sessions to choose from (e.g. Gnome, Unity, etc.). Maybe this has something to do with it.

The last thing I did before logging out for the last time was removing a package called "indicator-datetime", which I got from installing Unity. Maybe this information isn't useful but it really seemed to me like it caused my problem.
