I've tried to test 10.04. One, by upgrading a working KK installation. The other, was a fresh install. Both were as VMWare virtual machines.Both installs had the same problem. The install/upgrade process goes smoothly. When the GUI logon screen appears & I click on the user name, I'm unable to type in the password box. Nothing appears. If I then click "continue", the result is "authentication failure".

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using windows since I first get my pc but itz day-2-day demands and vulnerabilities make to turn to linux but for some other things I do need window yet last time kubuntu was on my machine along with window 7 (through wubi) but then I uninstall that kubuntu, coz I want to use ubunto. I've got my ubuntu 10.10 cd, so I just sat infront of my pc, inserted the disc and it was a happy installation as it usually does with wubi but when I restart my pc and go for ubuntu OS , there show up a kubuntu screen, which has a title like ubuntu login and there in username field, that's not my username dat I've choose for my ubuntu but it is my pc-name from win7. Well I try to log-in with the user I'd made during installation but it didnot let me logged-in I try again n again even through console but no hope. Then I go back to win and uninstall wubi and get install again ubuntu but nothing different was there to meet me. I have a core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40 Ghz intel processor with 64-bit win 7 ultimate. I am installing 32 bit ver of ubuntu 10.10...!

The initial upgrades after fresh installation also ran well and I was able to reboot and use the system successfully.This was before three-days.Yesterday night I ran again the Update Manager and installed the available (4-5) updates and then I installed Sun-Java-JDK using Synaptic Package Manager using the packages from the canonical partners.
After installation was done I shut down the system and in the morning when
I restarted the system the login screen is coming up but on entering the login credentials a black screen with some text(unable to see the text) flashes and returns me back to login screen.I tried logging in with both normal and admin type users.But admin type user too encounters the same problem.
I have partitioned my 500GB into 5 partitions and there is sufficient data on each partition.
I assume fresh installation would fix it and the data on logical partitions would be intact but doing this re-installation would require me to install the updates again and do all the settings I did till now again.
I made a huge mistake. I was installing dtc-toaster in a Lenny box, and i accidentally closed the aptitude window. Then I opened another konsole (I have kde 3.5 installed), and I couldn't switch to root via "su" command. I can't remember the error message that i got, but it was something like "module not recognized".
Next i reboot the PC, and when I tried to login in tty1, system saids that root "is not a valid username". I had no better luck with other users.
As I'm not an experienced user, I really don't know where to begin. The good news are that starting in recovery mode seems to work.
I have no extra data by now, except that I ran fsck (from a System Rescue CD) on the lenny root partition, and it found no errors.
One of my friends has installed ubuntu a day ago,when he installed it his portable hard-drive was attached to the PC .He is not sure whether he has installed ubuntu on portable drive or not,but now he not able to login into any of the OS on his machine until and unless he insert his portable drive,what could be the reason and what is the solution(his regular harddrive contains XP)
View 7 Replies View RelatedI upgraded to fedora 10 using yum but i have a problem, the installation went fine and after rebooting i got a login screen. I typed in my user name and password and after a second it returns to the login screen. Im sure the username and password are correct. If i type in another password i get an error message. So how can i log in?

Then i got an upgrade wizzard and selected Fedora 10 and than reboot.
In the grub menu only one kernel is present which is the Fc10 so couldn't use the old one.
I've tried to edit the kernel with single for single user that works gives me a command line but im just not experienced enough to figure out how i can use the command line to login.
I've installed F12 twice now. After completing the installation and getting all the updates via YumEx, my network trouble begin after a reboot. I am not able to login as root under gnome so I can't see the services panel.
Tried to reinstall 'NetworkManager' after the fact but of course I have no network connections so I may have made the problem worse. I hate to reinstall and repeat the same troubles over again as it consumes a lot of time. I don't know where to begin.
If I'm getting good at anything with Fedora, it would be making mistakes. I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. When I enter my password the login screens goes blank then my mouse pointer appears with the circling dashed loading symbol for a few secs and then brings me back to the login screen asking for my password again.

I attempted to use preupgrade to upgrade from Fedora 12 to 14 using wireless connection. It seems, that upgrade finished successfully, except I am not unable to get to a GDM login. I updated SElinux to selinux-policy-3.9.7-10 and selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.7-10, and touch /.autorelabel overnight, I was able to login using GDM once. And that is all. After I boot, after Ctrl+Alt+F4, I can login to terminal.

I downloaded Gentoo and burnt it on CD.I did boot the livecd and the system passed starting stage and it recognised my hardware. After that, there islivecd login prompt, and obviously I tried to use root and no password but it says login incorrect. This is what I did:

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured

Having installed Debian 7 on an old machine from a Liinux Format Magazine DVD I was unable to log in as a specific user. I can login as root and use useradd etc but when I logout of root I still cannot login as a user and nor will the machine accept my root password. I have to shutdown and reboot to get back into root. I'm using O'Reilly's Linux Pocket Guide from 2004 for the commands. Could it be that things have changed?

[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.
I am using rhel 5.3. I am using windows 2003 server 32-bit (the processor is 64 bit. AMD athlon x2). I have installed vmware and installed rhel5.3 64 bit on top of it. Now i am able to login as root from GUI mode (f7 console), but unable to login in text console from f1 to f6. I checked the /etc/securetty. But there was nothing unusual there. I think udev is causing this problem, since google said so. I cant find where the udev.rules file is located that google searches are taking about. How do i enable root login in f1-6 console.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't what happened but yesterday I was working normally and then I shutdown the computer, today when I opened ubuntu it took me to tyy1 login screen, I entered my username and password then it took me to the normal login screen with the login drums sound and it wrote on my account (logged in) so I clicked it and I entered my password again and then I got to my ubuntu so what went wrong and how to fix it also I noticed that a new terminal in system tools occurred called Kernel (I didn't add it)

I have just did an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I am planning to go to 10.04 . After the upgrade everything was ok but I noticed the GRUB was still legacy. So I updated my GRUB to GRUB2. Now when I boot, after entering my logon-id and password, it just brings me back to the login-id screen (to logon on). Any indication of what is wrong and how I should fix this ?
I have no encryptions. [added comments] Currently reading thread about login loop bug with 9.10 Followed instructions about possible missing pre-release update but even if it did do updates, I am still login screen looping. Doing additional researches until someone answers with the fix.

I installed 10.04 on my pc. I also have 9.08 and XP installed. Both work. The 10.04 gui login screen displays and asks for the password. I enter the password. The screen goes blank but after a few seconds the gui login box re appears and again asks for a login. I rebooted into the TTY, created a new user, checked the new user was in in /etc/passwd and that I could get into the new user's account. When I rebooted into the gui the new user was there and I entered the password but again I just got back to the gui login window. The pc I am using is at least 5 years old. I have tried startx and I do get the gui background but no controls are displayed. I am using 32 bit 10.04. Using the TTY I have uploaded all the current fixes.

At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

When tried to login from login screen it gives a message "Permission Denied" for all users including Root.So i tried it from recovery mode im able to login as root but has no permission to change any thing.

Nevertheless, it has happened many times that I couldn't log in Ubuntu after an update. I thus had to uninstall Ubuntu from Windows and reinstall a clean copy of Ubuntu again.
1. Is this common to you guys or just me alone?

3.Does Wubi play a role in causing this login problem since I install Ubuntu thru Wubi?

For some reason I am no longer able to log into my Ubuntu 9.10 system. I get to enter the password and it accepts it, starts to log me in but then throws me back to the login screen again without even a glimpse of the desktop. What could be causing this? Everything was working fine yesterday and I haven't made any changes to the OS.

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 from an external hard drive. I am able to get to the GUI login and enter the correct user/password combination. However, one I push enter it cuts away to a blank screen then returns to the login screen as if nothing happened. This doesn't happen if I log in without GUI (using alt+ctrl+f1 (or any other function key but 7).
Can someone tell me what is going wrong? I am still able to access my files from the hard drive by booting from a live CD if that matters at all.
I had a mysql package that wouldn't install correctly and was informed that the fix was to install dtc. Well I installed dtc and everything appeared to go fine. I now can't log in as any user and the only way to get back onto the system is in repair mode. Even uninstalling dtc with purge doesn't help.What do I have to do to fix it so my logins work correctly again? I have looked on Google and other sites for a fix and nothing seems to be working.

But i missed one slash (../../*) .Due to that, all the regular files in usr/lib were deleted.Now i can boot only in recovery mode.I re-installed some libraries using wget.But for "apt-get upgarde", it is saying ,dependency on synaptic.And the loop goes like never ending..Is their any way to reinstall the lib files in /usr/lib/?
