Ubuntu :: Unable To Login/sessions Missing

Jun 12, 2010

Yesterday, after I logged out of Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx), I was unable to log back in. When I enter my password the screen goes blank for a second and then it returns to the login menu. Also, I have noticed that there are no sessions to choose from (e.g. Gnome, Unity, etc.). Maybe this has something to do with it.

The last thing I did before logging out for the last time was removing a package called "indicator-datetime", which I got from installing Unity. Maybe this information isn't useful but it really seemed to me like it caused my problem.

Ubuntu :: Missing Incoming Sessions In Empathy?

May 17, 2011

This is an odd one, and it's probably just my system - I don't receive half of the new MSN messages I get sent. If I talk to someone and leave the window open, I'll get all of their messages; if I close the window, there's only a 10% chance I'll get their reply.

This happened once before, and telepathy-logger was having a fit; it's not this time. Has anyone else encountered any issues in the new release?

Amendment: Pidgin seems to work ok, but I miss the empathy integration; the pidgin plugin for notifications takes the edge off for now.

Ubuntu :: Can't Login - No Sessions Available?

Oct 17, 2010

I have Lucid Lynx 10.04 installed on my eee 900ha and I'm unable to log in to my desktop.

Earlier today I logged in successfully and I uninstalled a couple of unused programs (pitivi, evolution, fspot, and another that I can't remember). I then shut down the computer. Later when I booted the computer back up, I was greeted with the usual ubuntu login screen but I noticed that there were no options in the sessions drop-up menu. I entered my login information and pressed enter, and the screen went black, then went back to the login screen again.

I'm using gnome.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Doesn't Appear In The List Of Sessions At Login?

Jul 31, 2010

When I get to the login screen on my computer (with ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and xubuntu-desktop installed on Ubuntu), Gnome isn't in the list of desktop environments!

My temporary solution:

I have Openbox/Gnome. I also have an icon in my panel that opens "compiz --replace" so I can still use the regular WM with compiz.

Why my temporary solution isn't good enough:

It's annoying to have to have an extra icon in my panel, and to have to press it at login. Also, I don't get the Compiz splash screen when I login. Overall it's just not as impressive.

Is there any way to get Gnome back in the menu?

Ubuntu :: Multiple X Sessions - Auto Login 2 Different Users

Oct 11, 2010

I have a small problem regarding multiple X sessions. I want 2 X sessions started automatically on boot with 2 different users auto logged in and 2 different sessions running.

On first X session I would like to have gnome running with user1
On second X session I would like to have xbmc running with user2
So far my computer logs user1 in to a gnome session via gdm on boot. But then I have to launch a tty, log in as user2 and then start xbmc in a new X session.

How to make it work? I would also love to have the second X session active after boot. I am running Ubuntu 10.04.

Security :: Non Privileged User Sessions Close Immediately After Login?

Apr 16, 2009

while hardening a red hat enterprise 5 installation I have done something that causes the sessions of all user accounts except root to close immediately after authentication. in the /var/log/secure log file it will show three log entries per attempt:

<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user fred by LOGIN(uid=0)
<date/time><hostname> login: LOGIN ON tty1 BY fred
<date/time><hostname> login: pam_unix(login:session): session closed for user fred

Since I did a number of things and have not been able to identify what caused this.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login / After Couple Seconds Returned To The Login Splash Screen?

Oct 10, 2010

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

Debian Hardware :: Unable To Login To IMac G4 - Graphical Login?

Sep 30, 2015

I have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:

[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.

Last line is something along the lines of:

fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac

And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.

Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?

This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.

Ubuntu :: Login Window Missing On Startup

Aug 8, 2011

Upon booting this morning, my Ubuntu 11.04 install no longer shows the login window at startup. The background is still there, as well as the on-screen keyboard I have set to appear at startup. tty1-6 all work just fine, although they they dont automatically connect to wifi so i have to go wired (or learn how to connect to wifi via tty1) if i need to use the internet for this. Before this issue popped up, I had tried out xmonad and upon switching back to compiz, I have to run "compiz --replace" every time I log in which may have something to do with this problem. I also installed and uninstalled gnome 3 before that, so I may have broken something with all that.

Ubuntu :: Missing Login Prompt In Console Mode?

Feb 1, 2010

After upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10 I no longer get a login prompt when switching to console mode e.g. (CTRL+ALT)-F1. Instead i just get blinking cursor in the top left corner. Key strokes are printed the screen but otherwise nothing happens. I can switch back and forth between X and the console normally.

Where are the consoles configured, and is there a corresponding log somewhere i can check? Has anyone had similars problem?

My system is an old Amilo Pro laptop with a VIA 800 compatible chip-set.

However my user-name is gone from the list of users at the login screen or in the Login Screen Settings program.

OpenSUSE :: Root Login - Attempts To Start Missing App?

Oct 15, 2010

Somehow an app on this box seems to have disappeared long ago which was configured to start immediatedly with a root login (eg su). Now, whenever upgrading permissions to root or logging (and assuming login as root), an error displays saying "cannot find <application>"

Considering root usually is different than other logins, am not sure where to start looking on an OpenSuSE box. I've tried without success

BASH -v to enable verbose mode before executing a "su."
BASH --debugger to enable debugging mode before executing a "su."

Logout, Login as root and inspect /var/log/ hoping to find some logfile that audits the login sequence, but may be looking at a wrong logfile.

Fedora :: Login Missing After Apache / Zend Server Installation

Jan 9, 2011

I am new to Linux. I installed some weeks ago Fedora 14 via burnt iso file downloaded from official Fedora site. It was working perfectly like a charm for me until yesterday when I tried to install zend server for PHP. During my first try of installation of zend server it corrupted out my apache server and I lost apache on http://localhost. I removed all "zend-server" like stuff from "Add Remove Software" screen. Installed again apache 2 in the form of LAMP (Linux Apache Mysql Php) via terminal. Apache installed correctly and started workeing again ok on localhost. Then again I tried to install zend server from install.sh file in downloaded zend server installation. It showed me after a while like "zend server installed successfully".

I shut down my pc thinking everything is ok now. Today when I started my system, it shows me boot screen of Fedora, I select fedora and then it shows me balloon filling up for around 5-7 secs. Then all of a sudden a black screen appears up with a cursor blinking at its top left and then nothing else happens further. I cannot find login screen to my desktop anymore. I remember one thing that during reinstallation of apache from terminal, I set following command like "chkconfig --level 235 httpd" (I guess that's what I have written as per some online tutorial for LAMP). Is that cause of mine problem ot its something else?

I'm having trouble installing software from the source files. From what I can gather the problem lies with not having the correct c libraries installed. And that the configure command checks to see if you have everything to install. this is the output when I try to configure:

checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
checking for a thread-safe mkdir -p... /bin/mkdir -p
