Ubuntu :: Unable To Login In Gnome
Jun 13, 2010
I have a problem using Ubuntu 10.04. When I try to login, the screen turns black or white for a second and then returns to the login screen, without giving any error. Logging in in tty1 works fine though.
I have already tried some commands that might be of use. "sudo gdm" gives the following error:
Code:
/etc/profile: 29: [[: not found
** (gdm-binary:2265): WARNING **: Failed to acquire org.gnome.DisplayManager
** (gdm-binary:2265): WARNING **: Could not acquire name; bailing out
"gdmsetup" gives this:
Code:
(gdmsetup:2272): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Everything was fine yesterday, but today, the situation is the following:
When I try to login as root, using Gnome, after I enter username and password, it can do three things:
1- It brings me back to the GUI login screen again
2- Brings me to the prompt login screen (black)
3- It lets me in but I have no top or bottom navigation bars. (Sorry, cannot remember the actual names...) Sometimes I have access to a console screen, which allows me to reboot, and sometimes not, in which case I have to do a cold reboot. Not good.
The last attempt I made, I used the KDE interface and everything was fine.
I really don't understand what happened between yesterday and today, nobody but me uses this system at home and remote logins for root are disabled.
The systems is CentOS 5.3 with SELinux enforced.

I've installed F12 twice now. After completing the installation and getting all the updates via YumEx, my network trouble begin after a reboot. I am not able to login as root under gnome so I can't see the services panel.
Tried to reinstall 'NetworkManager' after the fact but of course I have no network connections so I may have made the problem worse. I hate to reinstall and repeat the same troubles over again as it consumes a lot of time. I don't know where to begin.

I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell GX240. I have severe difficulty logging in. If I try to login on GNOME or GNOME fail safe mode , I just cant get in . I keep getting the login screen again. I am able to go into terminal mode. Sometimes I have to try upto 100 times to login in GNOME or failsafe mode. Once I am in everything is fine. Is there a way to do some troublshooting? Also transfer to USB sticks is very slow - sometimes as slow as 1MB per min. Is this normal with Ubuntu?

I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.

I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.
I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.
How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10

I hear no login sound when I login to my ubuntu. I checked at startup applications and found GNOME login sound is enabled. The command used there is
Code:
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="desktop-login" --description="GNOME Login"
.
Its not only this, but there is no other sounds enabled - for mouse clicks etc

I have an iMac G4 that I installed Jessie on successfully. However, when it boots, one of the last messages is:
[FAILED] Failed to start Load Kernel Modules.
Last line is something along the lines of:
fb: switching to nouveaufb from OFfb NVDA,NVMac
And then the text starts dissolving, and the entire screen cycles through different colors. I presume it is sitting at the graphical login prompt but it's not displaying correctly.
Based on some Google searches, it seems like I should be able to resolve this by editing /etc/modules but I can't get to that point. I have tried to get to a terminal using ctrl-alt-F1 through ctrl-alt-F12. No luck. I tried different yaboot options that were supposed to avoid using the video driver. No luck. How do I get the machine to boot straight to a regular text login instead of the X one?
This machine worked fine running Mac OS X this morning, so I don't think it's the hardware. What I can do.

I am using rhel 5.3. I am using windows 2003 server 32-bit (the processor is 64 bit. AMD athlon x2). I have installed vmware and installed rhel5.3 64 bit on top of it. Now i am able to login as root from GUI mode (f7 console), but unable to login in text console from f1 to f6. I checked the /etc/securetty. But there was nothing unusual there. I think udev is causing this problem, since google said so. I cant find where the udev.rules file is located that google searches are taking about. How do i enable root login in f1-6 console.

After restart I cannot login to gnome, when I press ALT + CTRL + F1 it switch to text mode and I'm able to login with the same username and password.
Although when I enter the password on the gnome login it come a black screen for preparation to login but it go back to main login info, Bye the way I saved the username and password to auto login and I surprised after restart didn't login automatically.
I already created a test account adduser test but still not able to login whith the new one and the old.

I was eager to try GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 (because I wasn't very satisfied with Unity, like almost everybody around) so I installed it using this guide:http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-t...4-194085.shtmlAfter rebooting the system (to finish the installation), I've got an error message while trying to login:Quote:Could not update ICEauthority file /home/<username>/.ICEauthorityI've googled for some time and found different 'solutions', however none of them seems to be working. What can be done with a system like this? I'm not able to login, how can I downgrade the system?

I have today done a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. Afer the install I needed to upgrade my video driver (nVidia GeForce MX). I managed to find some instructions to uninstall the existing Nouveau driver and install the nVidia one. This all worked absolutely fine. The first time.
On subsequent logins after the login screen the system just hangs. I get a background screen with shades or purple and a working mouse but nothing else.
I can get to a command prompt (CTRL-ALT-F1) and Ubuntu seems to be working fine - it just seems to be a graphics problem.

downloaded and installed Gnome 3 on top of Ubuntu 11.04, Gnome 3's login screen appears and offers the following login options: Robert/Automatic Login/Other. Selection get nothing except the audio signal.
Have Login/restart/suspend in the upper right corner. Alt-f2 gets me to root login, except my 11.04 root login and password isn't accepted, so can't get in a root. I think that it is the Gnome GUI, as I have seen something about installing Compiz etc. I could just reinstall 11.04 or 10.10 for that matter, but hate to give up. So, if I could find out how to bring up the termainal, and then how to get to where I could add compiz or something??

I'm writing a point-of-sale application in Perl/Tk, to run on Ubuntu. For cashier accounts, I plan to just use normal Linux accounts. Cashier login will be done by scanning a badge with a barcode ID on it. Our barcode scanners are older serial-port types. Thus, I'd like to login to the X (Gnome) desktop, yet read the username (and password) via a serial port such as /dev/ttyS0.

Yesterday I did a successful upgrade to 10.04. Today, after a few hours of using and a few reboots, when I provide my password in GDM, the screen turns black and gets me back to the GDM. The same with recovery mode. When I turn onto the terminal I can't see any letters but a bunch of blurred lines on the top of the screen. In recovery mode the terminal works properly.GDM also works properly. Neither graphics, nor the resolution has changed.

I'm running a fresh install of Lucid without any issues thus far. I have my computer setup to log me in automatically, without requesting a password.
I installed Gnome-do and set it up to run at login (as I always have). After a reboot, my system is not responding to input from my mouse or keyboard. I can move my cursor, but it will not accept input.
I see gnome-do, which is partially covered by the "Unlock keyring" dialog" (which always comes up, I think to unlock my wifi).
