Ubuntu :: Desktop Folder Gets Deleted On Logout Or Login

Ubuntu 10.04. Also have Kubuntu desktop installed. Usually use Ubuntu. Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"
So, created the ~/Desktop folder. Changed the line in user-dirs.dir to read XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop". Log out. Log back in. Result:

Logged into the KDE desktop. It complains that the ~/Desktop folder does not exist. Shows nothing on the desktop. Create the ~/Desktop folder. Set KDE to use the ~/Desktop folder. Check .config/user-dirs.dir and make sure that the Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop" line is in. Everything is set. Log out.
Log in to Ubuntu. Result:
Home folder shows as the desktop. Checked settings for Nautilus, Home_folder_is_Desktop is NOT checked. ~/Desktop folder does not exist. .config/user-dirs.dir desktop line is set to XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"
This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.

Following bad instructions too fast to reset the default keyring password I deleted the file .gnome2/login.keyring ! I can still login and get to a terminal and do instructions from there. I can also still login with root and a guest account. But my desktop is just blank and I can't, even as a root, access my files.

I have a fresh install of kubuntu 9.10 which only seems to play the start up and shut down noise. Audio from games, flash videos, and other sources do not appear to work.
I've been searching around, and while there seem to be a few threads on this topic, none have solutions. Where should I begin?

Running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 and Compiz with cube enabled. I have a BTC 5100 PS/2 mini keyboard, and if keyboard layout is set to USA it works fine. Keyboard model is set to "Generic 105-key (Intl) PC" and I don't see an entry for BTC 5100.
But every time I logout or reboot, the system adds an entry for "USA International (with dead keys)" below the entry for "USA" in the keyboard layouts tab and then I lose keys like the apostrophe key. I have no idea where these setting are kept. I've checked .gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml, but see no change when I blow the second keyboard layout away.

Meerkat user and loving it so far. However, I've noticed a weird glitch in Ubuntu: when I boot up, everything works fine. However, if I logout and log back in, the panels are different! Instead of the black ones, the panels are now grey with different icons.
I've tried restarting the panels using gconftool and pkill gnome but it didn't work. Any suggestions? I've attached a screenshot for reference.

So I have Ubuntu Lucid machines about 20 of them. Configured via ldap authentication. I seem to be running into a rather strange logout problem. Whenever users click logout they're logged out, however after that all i get is the background screen with the cursor. The cursor is able to move, but no login screen.If i go to a terminal window alt+f1 and do a service gdm restart, then the login screen goes back to normal.

I experience the following issue with Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64, kernel 2.6.32-25-generic: When I login after having logged out, the theme is reset from Radiance to a quite coarse one withs grey folders and very basic icons. System|Preferences|Appearance->Theme tab just considers it Custom. No change to window borders, and trying to change the theme just affects the borders. Does not happen on a Ubuntu 10.10 32 bits installation.

i have installed Ubuntu 11.04 beta release 64 bit and frequently updating with latest updates(allmost all). now i'm having some problem, while i'm login to GUI interface it shows a blank screen(seems logging) and in the next screen it shows login screen again.(Immediate logout). i found some messages from syslog like below:

I am using KDE4 on 10.10 64-bit.
Only ever use the KDE desktop so completely removed XFE and the rudimentary Gnome left behind on the install.
Not a desperate problem just an annoyance.
Everything works fine, except if I logout the next login screen is using a really tiny font and I can't seem to find anywhere to change it.
The DPI must be about 10, as I can't even read it when blown up on my projector.

A few minutes ago I was using google chrome when suddenly the scroll-lock indicator on my keyboard turned on... I pressed the scroll-lock key, but nothing happened, the light remained. I opened a terminal and ran "top" to find what processes were running when I was automatically logged out. I logged back and checked the logs and found the following entries in my auth.log:

I've just made a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I right-click a panel and choose "New Panel", the panel is made, but is not visible. The panel is placed on the left side of the screen, and icons on the desktop is moved to the right. Also windows does not use the full width of the screen when maximized. I've tried to remove the panel configuration in my home directory, logout and login, installing ATI drivers and running a gnome-panel command (from another post on ubuntu forums), but nothing works.

Recently I've been having an issue where every now and then, all of a sudden fedora logs me out and takes me to the login screen.
All my unsaved work is lost and I have to log back in again.

I was trying to update software and it told me to log out and login again. When I tried to login it told that there is a problem and I need to log out and to login again and it kept repeating the message and fedora is not working at all and before that it wasn't working right it kept suspending without reason and each time I turn the laptop off from the power button.

Two month ago I accidentally deleted my home folder (yes, very stupid idea but it wasn't on purpose).
I managed to recover the home folder from /home/.Trash-0/tobias by copying it back to where it belongs and changing the file ownership from "root" to my user (tobias).
After this recovery I tried to delete /home/.Trash-0/tobias but it wouldn't work. Whenever I tried, a new folder appeared in /home/.Trash-0/ (root home) named tobias.2, tobias.2.2 and so on. (see first screenshot). This means I had two copies of my home folder on my hard disk (2 x 156.1 GB at that time).
At that time I didn't care since I had enough disk space left (33.8 GB, see second screenshot) and thought Ubuntu would take care of this some time by removing the files in /home/.Trash-0/.
Fast forward to today, I get warnings of low disk space. My home folder today is around 160 GB but together with the deleted one in /.Trash-0/ I only have 1.3 GB disk space left in my home folder.
Any ideas how to delete the unused second home folder copy? Or is there some other way to free the disk space occupied by .Trash-0/ ?
(Ubuntu 10.04. LTS on vaio VPCEB1S1E btw)

I have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.

Since upgrading to KDE 4.6.3 (from 4.6.2), I found the desktop names hadreverted to "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc. I renamed them in "PagerSettings" but when I next logged on, I found they had reverted. I'm new to Ubuntu (at least on server distributions). I used debian versions for a long time and thought, to try ubuntu LTS 10.0.4, because of the long time support cycle. I had problems, to install this distribution on a x86 platform (used with ASUS P4B533-v), because of kernel panic after installation. So I used a trick to get it running. I installed Ubuntu LTS 8.04 and compiled a kernel 2.6.34 and made a distupgrade. All went o.k. and is now running as a productive system.
My question now belongs to the used pid folder /var/run. I'm using some self compiled programs and had to create a separatly folder (e.g. /var/run/stunnel). My problem is, after rebooting the system, the folder is deleted automatically! Never saw this issue on other distributions. Is there any reason why? Of course, I can write a section in my init script, searching for existing folder and if not, creating it ...

I made the unfortunate mistake of doing this (sudo rm -r /bin) instead of (sudo rm -r bin) in the folder I was in..I'm trying to copy my data over from my Karmic system using mount, but I'm unable to mount. When I try to mount I get errors of an wrong fs type..
I've done fdisk -l & I get this:
/dev/sda1 * 1 37599 302013936 83 Linux
What the heck filesystem is Linux? Is that like ext3 or something? I don't know. Here is what I'm trying to run:
mount -t ??? /dev/sda1 /media/disk -o force
Also, besides that. If there a way I can fix my OS without having to do a reinstall? Or at least is there a way can backup my files? I have a 1tb external so that's not the issue.

By naming one of my folders wrong I thought I don't need it anymore and pressed delete button while holding shift. Is there any way I could get that folder back? (I'm actually looking for the file inside that folder - .conky config file to be more precise) I've tried scalpel and extundelete, but none of them worked.
