I have created two additional users and now wanted to delete them. I did so in system / administration / users and group as well es through the terminal. However - when I reboot the computer the users I had deleted seem to be back. They show up on the welcome screen but when I click on them they don't work any more. How can I delete them alltogether?

View 3 Replies View RelatedAm trying to set up a new system but am getting some strange behavoir. I've administered an Irix system before. I have opensuse 11.3 installed with gnome running. When i enter a bad user id in the windows login screen, the bad authentication causes the x window manager to crash and leaves the system in the ascii terminal mode login. I then have to login as root and do an init 3 , then init 5 to get the x server started again an get the windows login started. Has any one seen this behavior before and how can i fix this. Been hunting through /etc/X11/xdm to see what startup scripts could be causing this.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have used Ubuntu since 7-4; I now have 10.4. However, in the last week I have been taken to the login screen three times. This could be potentially calamitous. Ctrl+Alt +Backspace have by default been disable since 9-4. There is no way I am pressing atl+Prtscr +K. I wonder if there is a new zap command in 10.4, and if so, how to disable it. I have never found the need to go back back to the login window. I am generally using the command line when doing this.

View 5 Replies View RelatedWhile installing some new packages,i intended to delete /usr/lib/xxx/* by using ../../../*. But i missed one slash (../../*) .Due to that, all the regular files in usr/lib were deleted.Now i can boot only in recovery mode.I re-installed some libraries using wget.But for "apt-get upgarde", it is saying ,dependency on synaptic.And the loop goes like never ending..Is their any way to reinstall the lib files in /usr/lib/?

I DO NOT WANT TO BELONG TO A FREAKING GROUP I JUST WANT 1 SIMPLE ADMIN ACCOUNT. someone please explain everything related to this subject. i mean i see stupid groups like 'audio' and 'couchdb'. I had two accounts. One was an admin and I set the other as an admin as well, but left it without a password since I wanted the new user to enter it themselves. I went into the new admin account and deleted the old, passworded one.
However, this new account doesn't have a password that I explicitly defined on it. How do I change that? The account is the only one and still 'disabled'.

So, created the ~/Desktop folder. Changed the line in user-dirs.dir to read XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop". Log out. Log back in. Result:

This problem showed up on two computers after a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 followed by an install of the Kubuntu desktop. Might as well install Kubuntu desktop because some of the utilities I like to use (Kate, Krusader, etc) require that major parts of it be installed anyway. What appears to be happening is that the user-dirs.dir folder is getting ignored and is overwritten either on logout or login and the ~/Desktop folder is being deleted.
I accisentaly deleted my root user on lenny, because of a gamepanel...Do you know how to re-create it?I am logged in SSH with the root user, so i'll try to re-enable it when the work will end in the window.Edit:User now re-created, he doesnt have the root rights

I gave admin rights to second user. Logged out the first user DON- who is now only the desktop user. Before deleting the account through users and groups - I deleted the folder DON from home folder. I restarted the comp. unable to login. I had created automatic login for both users. How to restore the folder DON while using root shell.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI did a cleanup on old user ids on my server several months ago. One of the user ids was 1005.. When i check the quota page on webmin, it says that userid 1005 is using 8.40 GB on the system, but I can't find those files anywhere! The home folder was deleted with the user ids, so I'm not sure what the username was to begin with.If I check the passwd file - there is no 1005 listed. So i did a find / uid 1005 and I tried a find / -nouser command.. Neither list files owned by 1005. How can I find where those 8.4 GB of files are?edit: when I do a du -sch * to find space being used.. there is only 5 folders within the /home that could have 8G in there .. (assumeing du -sch shows all files, including hidden).. du -sch * from / shows only possible location is in the /home folder

Then the hackers created these users, i.e. (1) oracle, (2) exim, (3) test, (4) cox. I tried to delete all of these four users by using "usrdel" command but the system said "I cannot delete these users as the users are logging in". If my system got hacked ?? or these users are created by the system itself?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user.However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory.Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console

password:
last used: [date]
login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.

i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?
The problem come after i kill the Xorg using the kill command,and the screen turns to black without anything so that i can do nothing. The problem goes on after reboot
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed and was working excellently until yesterday when I uninstalled a few programs.From that time I am getting this error " Graphic card driver not configured/installed Start Ubuntu in low graphic mode?" When I say YES to start Ubuntu in Low Graphic Mode the system takes infinite time and never proceeds to login menu. But from Command line I can access web using w3m command.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy laptop did a "shutdown" (not reboot) automatically over night when I was downloading few things. When I tried to boot it up, it boots up & it never displays the window which asks for password. I have tired to reboot it several times since then it still stays at the same place. Since it is not displaying username & password window & I am not able to login through gdm. Interesting thing is the normal sound which comes when the login window is display is heard but the window is not seen. However when I press ctrl+alt+f5 I am able to login there which is only text based login.
I tried several things to get out of issue like
1) In the console run
ps -eaf | grep -i gdm
I see that the login process is running but is not displaying the window.
2) sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg ( it didnt ask me anything about the driver or anything like that & just returned with out any error message )
$? of the above command was 0.
==> reboot after this & still the login window would not come.
3) After login at the console ( ctrl_alt+f5 )
sudo service gdm stop ==> no error prints
sudo service sdm start ==> no error prints
==> no login window
4) apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
==> no login window
5) export DISPLAY=:0.0
sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center 2>gdm.txt ( this the attached error messages)
ctrl+alt+f7
==> no login window
I would hate to reinstall ubuntu again cause of the amount of software + data + personalization.
While installing Lubuntu 10.04, I opted for Auto login, but now I want to go for it.
How can I restore that option, so that I get the login window on start up.
I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.
In Ubuntu, I run Compiz/Metacity, but I also have wmii installed. I know how to change to wmii for a one-time log in, but I don't know how to make it default for specific user.
