Fedora :: Cannot Read Well As Fonts Appear Clouded On Screen
Jan 29, 2011On Fedora (and not on, for example, debian, which I have tried a few weeks ago) I find it irritating look on the screen. It's a little hard to explain but after a while I use Fedora gets really irritating this thing because I cannot read well as the fonts appear clouded. I tried to follow many guides, for example, on improving font but the problem remains. I tried installing the nvidia drivers but the problem remains.

May 29, 2010I just received a pennicle TV tuner card for my birthday so I installed mythtv. All I get when I start the frontend is a puke colored screen. There appears to be buttons, but they are so small you have to strain to see them. I had to set up a custom xorg-config file to get my resolution to work with my monitor because the nvidia driver couldn't properly detect the screen. According to some posts, that could be the problem but there were no solutions. I am at a loss as to what to do.
System information: Debian Squeeze on quad-core phenom (AMD64). Nvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 graphics card using the Nvidia driver. Pinnace TV tunner using Conexant CX2388x chipset.
CentOS 5 :: Unicode Rendering - Browser Title Bar Not Showing Sinhala Letters
May 14, 2010I've installed sinhala unicode support to my CentOS 5.4 machine, after that firefox able to render sinhala web pages well but browser title bar still doesn't showing sinhala letters. I've changed the default font in the browser to sinhala font but still have that problem.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Install New Fonts In 9.10
Feb 17, 2010After upgrading to 9.10, the fonts I had placed in my .fonts folder no longer function in any application.I have tried to re-install them by just clicking on the font itself and going through the installation screen. But this doesn't do anything.I have tried to delete and the re-create my .fonts folder in my /home partition. But that also fails.
Did Ubuntu do something different with user-installed fonts in 9.10? Should my fonts be relocated to another folder?How can I install "after market" fonts?
Debian :: Unable To Install Fonts
Aug 22, 2011I have just undertaken my first install of debian after a couple years of using ubuntu. I used netinstall and have made a minimal install with wheezy and lxde. I am trying to install the ubuntu-font-family because it is so pretty!
1. I tried downloading the .ttf files, extracting them to a directory and using the program 'font-manager' (which I had used on ubuntu previously,) and it says they are installed but I can not access the font from any program.
2. I tried using fontmatrix, another graphical program. Same thing.
3. I tried installing the .deb package for the fonts after downloading from the ubuntu repos. still cannot use them. (but I can physically see the font files in the folder, same as with above methods.)3. i tried manually installing the fonts via the command fc-cache -f -v (after placing them in /usr/share/fonts, /usr/local/share/fonts, and ~/.fonts [none of which worked.]) After running the command 'fc-cache -f -v,' I run the command 'fc-list' and the fonts are still not in the list.

Trebuchet MS), so I installed the Microsoft True Type Core Fonts, using the Ubuntu Software Center, but they don't work (tested with Firefox and Chromium).I made a very simple test HTML, and set my default font to a monospaced font, to see if it falls back, and it does for all fonts except Helvetica and Arial.

Jan 19, 2011I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. I ran the installation after buring the dvd and everything seemed to be working fine. after the installation i ran updates and used it for a little bit. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

Jan 15, 2010I just finished installing a bunch of truetype fonts. After installing them, firefox is displaying "bradybunch" font when I search google.
The font settings are all serif and sans serif in both the system fonts settings and firefox settings.
I am using ubuntu 9.10.
Any idea why this could be happening?

Jul 3, 2011I have a folder with over 1500 fonts, I would like to move them to my /usr/share/fonts folder so that they can be used. Some are from Windows, some are just random extras. I've installed the msttcorefonts, but there are quite a few missing that make some wen pages look different.
How can I go about putting the fonts from my folder, into the appropriate /usr/share/fonts folder to be used? And how can I move them all? I can't drag and drop them, and mv FONT_NAME /usr/share/fonts for all of them will take a month or two. Is there a way to elevate my self to be able to just drag and drop them all? And which folder would they need to go into for them to be used in Chrome and Firefox?
OpenSUSE :: 3.2 Fonts Get Loaded To /usr/local/share/fonts?
Feb 23, 2010I have just installed openSUSE 11.2 X86_64 on my laptop, I then used KDE to install lots of type 1 fonts for my printer. These get loaded to /usr/local/share/fonts/...These installed fonts are visible to KDE (KWRITE) and GIMP so I assume that the installation was O.K. When I start openOFFICE writer I do not see these fonts. The font selection appears to be the fonts located under /usr/share/fonts. I have not tried other ooo3 components. I assume that they are not going to see the fonts either.
I have searched google and it appears that /usr/local/share/fonts is the correct location for non-packaged fonts. Has anybody any idea what is wrong? I think I could move all the fonts to /usr/share/fonts and ooo3 would work but this seems to break the installation directory structure. I have considered symlinks but I don't like the idea of defining a font twice to Linux and creating the syslinks is more work than reinstalling the fonts if they are lost

Aug 21, 2010I'm trying to delete files on a USB disk. If I try using terminal using rm, because files are write only. I can't change this, even as root using chmod or unmount mount. When I use fdisk I still can't reformat, either as superuser or root. I get the following :

Ubuntu :: Unable To Read CD ROM File System / Enable This?
Jan 16, 2010I insert a certain cdrom into my DVD drive, the cd is mounted meaning I do can see the cd rom icon on my desktop. The cd rom icon name is the correct label of the cdrom but when I try to open the cdrom it results to be empty.
Then on the same computer I have installed Virtual Box and the Windows 7 image does read the content of the cdrom.
How can I read the content of the cdrom with ubuntu 9.10?

May 1, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my computer with following specs:
ASUS P5KR Mobo
HIS 2600XT GFX
160 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA)
500 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA) - Only for Data.
The 160 GB Harddisk is currently split into 3 main partitions: i) 200 MB created by Win7 setup.
1) Windows 7
2) Leopard OSX
3) Partition formatted in Leopard as Journal which is empty, meaning I can convert this if I want and onto which I will install Ubuntu.
My problem is that despite booting up fine, installer starting and working fine, it cannot however detect my partition table, it thinks its unallocated.
The funny thing is that I can mount the partitions and view the data but the installer however can't see it.

Sep 8, 2010Below is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.

Jun 20, 2011I am in Germany right now, and for the internet, I have given a USB Stick: mobilcom-debitel Surf-Stick, XS Stick W14. The problem is, the files on this stick all have .exe extension. I tried to use Wine to make them work, but Wine says that they are not marked as executable. So I tried to change that, but I got a message saying that the files are "read-only", and I cannot make that change.
PS. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Jan 12, 2010I have downloaded WINE and I have downloaded the WoW install.exe file and all goes good during installation (after i simply double clicked the install.exe file) but about half way through I got an error message that "installer is unable to read file C:/commen files/world of warcraft. I tried teh same thing on Z: and it did the same thing. What can I do to fix this or how else can i download/install WoW? i'm not running windows and linux, just straight up Ubuntu, nothing else.

Jan 21, 2010I have the following problem on fedora 12, x64 amd; I have installed fedora 12 from a live cd, whit custum partition tables (no lvm or somting like that). my sceam is (on a single 80 gb maxtor sata disk only 1 system, clean install):

Notitng more (not needed also). The installation was successfully. No problems on the install part. ALs no problems on the ugprade part. I installed the rest using yum groupinstall. When i want to add the extra 4 disks (all samsung 1 tb spinpoint sata) that i have for my backupdata, non of the partiotionprograms can recognise. If i do; moun /dev/sdb1/ /media/sdb1, it says that i need to add the file system. well, by some sort of misstake, i could find a workaround for this. When start gparted, select on of the samsung disks, select any of the flags in gpart, remove the flag and give it a ok, gpart can read the amount of data thats used. After that i ame able to mount whit a simple mount /dev/sbd1 /media/sdb1 command. When i use this command: hdparm -z /dev/sdb1, i can mount the disk afterwards, whitout problems. Of course, i need to add them als to my /etc/fstab file, so they automount each time at boot.........

Feb 16, 2010I bought a RAVE car manual CD which wont read on either Linux or Windows, despite a 2nd one being sent. I have another RAVE CD which works fine on both systems. That is formatted to iso9660 but the latest ones are not.Are they not being formatted correctly, before being burnt or is there some other file system which should function nd if so how do I determine what FS is in use and ensure it's recognised?

Oct 19, 2010Every time when I right click the USB drive icon and select "Safely remove drive" I always get this error message
FAILED: No such file or directory
even though the icon does disappear from the desk top. I have been ignoring it since the USB drive seems working fine.Now I have a more serious problem. When I tried to copy files onto the USB drive it says "read only file system" and doesn't let me. I tried unplug and plug the USB key but that doesn't help.

Feb 9, 2011Using Ubuntu 10.10 (installed via mythbuntu) I'm unable to read or see files/directories created under Ubuntu. I think it started happening after a reboot to Windows. Some of the directories created under Ubuntu have disappeared completely and some of them produce the following error:

Just to make it worse I copied more data onto the disk from windows so may have lost some it completely. It there anyway I can repair this? When trying to check under Windows it says it can't. Some of the missing files can be reloaded but others can't. Ran chkdsk /f under Windows XP. Some files have reappeared, but there has been a lot of unrecoverable files lost. Conclusion: Ubuntu 10.10 is badly broken for writing to NTFS. As I would like to share between Windows & Ubuntu using the external disk, I'm not sure what to do at this stage.
