Ubuntu :: Unable To Create Trashing Info File: Read-only File System

Jul 21, 2010

I plugged in my USb drive into my computer yesterday and tried to delete a folder. I was unable to do so and got the following message

Cannot move file to trash, do you want to delete immediately? The file "my file" cannot be moved to the trash. Show Details Unable to create trashing info file: Read-only file system

So when I click on delete I get another error message:

Error while deleting.
There was an error deleting Case Study Database. Show Details Error removing file: Read-only file system

At this point I can only click on Skip, Skip All, or Cancel.

I have not changed anything on the stick recently so I dont know what is causing the problem.

General :: Installing To A Wiped Hard Drive / "unable To Read" Errors?

May 14, 2010

I recently got a computer donated to me for free from my Computer Science class, as the teacher couldn't figure out what the problem was that was preventing him from booting to the startup screen (all I could figure out was that the slot the memory card was in was bad, so I switched slots and got it working). The hard drive on the computer was wiped with a disk nuker called DBAN. Now I would like to install a Linux OS on the computer, but whatever disc or distro I try gives me similar "unable to read" errors. I would like to know if there's anything software-wise I need to do before attempting to replace any hardware. An example of the error I'm getting is as follows (using a mandriva livecd):

/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: line 1281: /var/log/dmesy: Read-only file system
SQUASHFS error: sb_bread failed reading block 0xa6e58
SQUASHFS error: unable to read cache block [29b963ea:782]
SQUASHFS error: unable to read directory block [29b963ea:782]

Anyone know what I need to do to get this fixed so that I can install a Linux distro?

Ubuntu :: Installing Firmware-b43-installer Without Internet Connectivity?

Dec 9, 2010

how to install firmware-b43-installer without internet connectivity. I downloaded firmware-b43-installer from another computer with internet. Then I found out from the error messages I also needed b43-fwcutter. So I also downloaded then installed b43-fwcutter. b43-fwcutter installed with no problems. Then I tried to install firmware-b43-installer again with no luck. I saw in the error messages it said something about broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2. I have no idea how to install a tar.bz2 file.

Here is where I downloaded the files I needed.

http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...10.5-4_all.deb
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/poo...013-2_i386.deb
http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/b...0.10.5.tar.bz2

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Installing Nvidia Drivers Using Their Own Installer

May 1, 2011

I can install the nvidia driver for my card easily with yast but would like to try using nvidia's own installer. There is a paths problem. I've spent some time looking at 11.4 kernel build paths and they seem to be circular so the installer will not find what it needs. The installers help in this respect is as follows.

Code:
--kernel-source-path=KERNEL-SOURCE-PATH
The directory containing the kernel source files that should be used when compiling the NVIDIA kernel module. When not specified, the installer will use '/lib/modules/`uname -r`/build', if that directory exists. Otherwise, it will use '/usr/src/linux'. Obviously it will fail on the build directory and fall back to usr/............ where linux is a symbolic link linux -> linux-2.6.37.1-1.2

which must be the one in the same directory but it fails to find either type of auto conf file From this I assumed that it just needed pointing at the correct build directory but this turns out to be symbolic link

Build -> /usr/src/linux-2.6.37.1-1.2-obj/x86_64/desktop

However when pointed here it still doesn't find what it needs and falls over looking for the kernel header this time. I thought that the idea of the /usr/src/linux link was to standardise kernel building but if suse use it for something else or nvidia make the wrong assumptions just where should the installer be pointed?
