Ubuntu :: Unable To Delete Read-only Files?

Aug 21, 2010

I'm trying to delete files on a USB disk. If I try using terminal using rm, because files are write only. I can't change this, even as root using chmod or unmount mount. When I use fdisk I still can't reformat, either as superuser or root. I get the following :

Disk /dev/sdh: 16.1 GB, 16064184320 bytes
7 heads, 37 sectors/track, 121140 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 259 * 512 = 132608 bytes

Ubuntu :: Ext USB NTFS Disk Unable To Read Files Created Under 10.10

Feb 9, 2011

Using Ubuntu 10.10 (installed via mythbuntu) I'm unable to read or see files/directories created under Ubuntu. I think it started happening after a reboot to Windows. Some of the directories created under Ubuntu have disappeared completely and some of them produce the following error:
/media/storage/videos/Kids Videos$ ls
ls: cannot access Justin Bieber: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Octonauts: Input/output error
rest of directory is seen fine...

Same on some files:
ls -l
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.mp4: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.nfo: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.srt: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Dirk Gently.tbn: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Human Planet: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Russell Howard's Good News: Input/output error
ls: cannot access The Planets: Input/output error
ls: cannot access Lost Land of the Tiger: Input/output error
total 300160 .....

Just to make it worse I copied more data onto the disk from windows so may have lost some it completely. It there anyway I can repair this? When trying to check under Windows it says it can't. Some of the missing files can be reloaded but others can't. Ran chkdsk /f under Windows XP. Some files have reappeared, but there has been a lot of unrecoverable files lost. Conclusion: Ubuntu 10.10 is badly broken for writing to NTFS. As I would like to share between Windows & Ubuntu using the external disk, I'm not sure what to do at this stage.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba - Access The Shares But Read-only And Unable To Delete / Modify Files Using The IMacs

Sep 2, 2010

I have a few ubuntu servers which have samba shares on the network and for the most part have had little trouble with them. Recently we purchased a few iMac's for one of our deptartments and, while we're able to access the shares, all the files on them are read-only and we are unable to delete/modify files using the iMacs. This is not an issue with any of our windows machines (W2K, WinXP, Vista).

General :: Unable To "read" Files In Either Directory?

Jun 1, 2010

Is it possible / how can I? I have two directories "money" and "assets". I have two users, "jonn" and "jean". I "need" john and jean to share a login called "post". I want John and Jean to use this "post" login to be able to write a file to folders called "money" and "assets". I don't want them to be able to "read" files in either directory. I tried chmod 400 and that didn't work. They couldn't write a file to the directory.

What permissions can I give / assign so that they can write a file but they can't read any other files? Remember, there are different directories that they will "write" the files to.

No doubt you can change file and directory permissions on files such that when you upload a file via ftp, it uploads fine but isn't visible to the uploader.

I am running the latest suse release downloaded directly from their website. When i shut it down that night and went to restart it I got an error that stated the OS wasnt there. I then went through the installation and everything and it retained the information from the installation before (web history etc.) but for some reason every time I reboot or shut it down the system is not able to read the startup information from the hard drive and will not come on without me re installing it.

Software :: Making A Bash Script To Read In Different Files And Rename Output Files?

May 7, 2009

Until now i haven't had to dabble with bash scripts.

I have a program that reads in data files. These are named datafile01_R, datafile01_G, datafile01_B, they then increment, so datafile02_R etc i have about 600 of these. the program reads in 3 data sets at a time from each run, so files_01 r, g, and b.

The program then does its magic, and outputs about 40 different files, depending on the file, they gone to folders named R, G, B, psa, or tracking.

The program itself has configuration files to say where the files should gone when analyzed, there is also the config files that reads in the data sets.

At the moment i have to run one set of data, then go in and manually change the input file location, and run again. But, doing this, even though a different data set, the new set overwrites the old set in one of the output folders. So i need a way to increment the output filenames after they are written and before the program is run again with the new data set.

I was trying to uninstall all my audio drivers/software because of conflict issues.Anywaysomehow I corrupted/deleted/destroyed important stuff. When I try to boot I get this message, "Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure them yourself". I tried doing some of the various things suggested on the forum, to no avail. It wont let me log directly to the computer at the any terminal it offers because it wont accept my user name etc. Anyway, I partitioned the drive and loaded a fresh copy of 10.04 (which is what I already have) and would like to view the files on the corrupted side so I can import my urgent documents.

How to see the first/last lines in a zip file (like head/tail commands)? The zip file only contains one file of big size.

Also, is it possible to read the lines from the zipped file one by one in C++ programming?

It's not a good idea to unzip it first due to its big size.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Read Partition Table (10.04)

May 1, 2010

I'm trying to install Ubuntu Linux 10.04 on my computer with following specs:

ASUS P5KR Mobo
HIS 2600XT GFX
160 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA)
500 GB Hitachi Harddisk (SATA) - Only for Data.

The 160 GB Harddisk is currently split into 3 main partitions: i) 200 MB created by Win7 setup.

1) Windows 7

2) Leopard OSX

3) Partition formatted in Leopard as Journal which is empty, meaning I can convert this if I want and onto which I will install Ubuntu.

My problem is that despite booting up fine, installer starting and working fine, it cannot however detect my partition table, it thinks its unallocated.

The funny thing is that I can mount the partitions and view the data but the installer however can't see it.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Format FC Hard Drive - Unable To Read

Sep 8, 2010

Below is results from attempt at formatting my hard drive. As you can see a driver is installed, but not working. Perhaps something is missing? Seems a bit odd that a "unable to read" comes back when disk data is reported. The drive just went through a low level format. BTW this is a fiber channel drive. Also on board are 5 scsi drives. Adaptec raid card. Not sure if that would have any relevance, but there you are.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Use Internet On A USB Stick - Read-only

I am in Germany right now, and for the internet, I have given a USB Stick: mobilcom-debitel Surf-Stick, XS Stick W14. The problem is, the files on this stick all have .exe extension. So I tried to change that, but I got a message saying that the files are "read-only", and I cannot make that change.

PS. I am using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

Ubuntu :: Read Files In Partition From Windows?

Ubuntu :: Can Read But Not Copy Files From UFS Drive

Aug 15, 2010

My Freenas server is currently off line for the moment pending the arrival of some thermo paste and I need to get some files off one of the drives. The drive is formatted in the UFS file system.I am using a usb to sata converter to hook the drive up to my laptop which is running 10.04.I am then able to browse the files by going to my /mnt folder. The problem is I cannot copy any of the files. I get a permission error. I have tried chmod 777 command to change the permission but I get an error about it being read-only. I tried running nautilus as root to copy the files but I still get a permission error. Using nautilus as root to change the permission or alter any of the read/write options fails because the drive is read only.

From what I understand I can only mount the drive as read only because its UFS and I can't change the permissions because its read only. Sounds a bit like an endless loop lol.Running Freesbie (freebsd live cd) didn't do me any good as it didn't even detect my hard drive and I don't want to learn a new OS just to transfer my files.ny advice would be appreciated. I really don't want to wait until my thermo paste comes and I will be on the road for the next couple of weeks so I won't even be able to get it setup. I need these files now.

Ubuntu Security :: All Files And Folders Are Read Only?

Sep 6, 2010

I've recently upgraded to 10.04 and have noticed that all the files or folders I've been creating recently are read only. I can manipulate the folders on my ubuntu system itself and create new entries, folderes, subfolders, and save files. IE a payment receipt in pdf format. However if I then try to move or copy any of these to my DROBO (data storage device) the file gets the LOCK Icon on it and becomes read only. If it is a subfolder I can no longer copy to it and if it's a regular file, say a pdf or flv I can't modify it. Attempting to change the file permissions on either my ubuntu desktop or any other folder works but once it goes to the drobo I lose the ability to change it off of ---. Again, this was all working fine before doing the upgrade to 10.04. Yes I did do a clean install to 10.04.
