Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Use Internet On A USB Stick - Read-only
Jun 20, 2011
I am in Germany right now, and for the internet, I have given a USB Stick: mobilcom-debitel Surf-Stick, XS Stick W14. The problem is, the files on this stick all have .exe extension. I tried to use Wine to make them work, but Wine says that they are not marked as executable. So I tried to change that, but I got a message saying that the files are "read-only", and I cannot make that change.
How do I get internet connection through mobile broadband (internet stick Nokia CS 15) for my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens) with encrypted hard disc (LVM)? I have set up LVM using Ubuntu 10.04 Alternate install.
Earlier when I installed the ordinary desktop version (Ubuntu 10.04 desktop) using no encrypted disc the internet connection worked fine. Before I installed the software from the internet stick an image appeared (Nokia Modem) on the desktop. I dubbel clicked the image and through the files that appeared I installed the software. After that I clicked the Eject Volume and after some input I had my connection.
But now I dont get that image on my desktop when the stick is plugged in. I can imagine that I have to mount the stick some how. I can further imagine that the encrypted hard disc through its protection now stop me from this action.
I am running FC11 and I recently purchased an internet stick from Bell Canada.I have searched/googled and searched again for setup help, to no avail. When, I insert the USB Internet stick, it shows up on my computer as a MMC storage device.FYI, the light on the Stick is green, which would indicate all systems go, but it simply won't connect.
After having trouble with Ubuntu 9.10 (solved with a nice modemmanager bug fix by a great user) here we are with the new Lucid Lynx: until now, just to be safe, I am trying my Nokia CS-10 USB stick (for wireless 3g connection) with the Live Ubuntu, and it doesn't even get recognized (no red light or anything else)...
Can only read files on USB stick, and USB Drive. Can't copy, move or delete them due to restrictions/file permissions...."You are not the Owner...." etc. Can I remove all such permissions. I am the only user of this machine?
I used my usb to install ubuntu on my netbook and now it says it's read only. Checked all over for a switch, even pulled the plastic case off but I can't find one.
The titles says about everything. CD's are perfectly automounted.WhenI insert a DVD however (I tried various DVDs), absolutely nothing happens, as if I would have inserted nothing or a blank DVD.I already read lots of threads and nothing o help... Here are the outputs of a few commands that might or might not be useful.A line I added myself in fstab which appears completely useless:
Code: /dev/sr0 /media/dvd auto utf8,user,noauto,exec 0 0 Code:
It is a wired connection through Time Warner and worked flawless with XP. It will not load any page except for google.com homepage and I cannot access any of the links in the search results of google. I know the internet works since google will load and I have done all that I can think of (ping and manually enter my connection) and nothing works. I am running the OS on a Acer Aspire M1610 desktop.
I have install ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell studio, I have local broadband connection with its user name and password which i use to connect internet everytime i need along with its IP Address, subnet mask, Default gateway, Preferred DNS server. Where should i put all this details to connect internet, i have already tried with Network connection in System -> Preference . It all work well in window
Currently I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with Windows XP on it. I want to switch to Ubuntu, so I have the OS on a flash drive and I can run it fine. The only problem is,I cant see any wireless networks in range. I know the router is working because I can connect with Windows fine. A notification also pops up telling me i have to install missing drivers. But when i click on install, the progress gets to 99% and fails. It says i need the Broadcom B43 driver, but i don't know how to get it.
I've been trying for 3 days now, gone to a couple of ubuntu sites, asked some friends who unfortunately don't have the time to assist me, and gone through several forum responses on here to try to find the solution to my problem. The problem is my inability to connect to my wireless network. I have a linksys USB device for my wireless, and the wireless router is literally right next door to my room. I am able to find my router and my neighbor's router from my computer. However I can not connect to my router. It is WPA enabled, and I have the correct password. It is just unable to connect to the network, it tries for a few minutes then doesn't connect at all and says wireless network disconnected. I am currently hooked up to an unsecured wireless network, but I can't connect to the internet. I am using firefox, but it doesn't seem to connect to any site I try.
Here is the lspci

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. My problem is that I am unable to access my internet using Ubuntu. My internet is running fine on Windows 7 installed on same system. I am a bit unfamiliar with Linux. I tried to configure my network settings but it didn't help. I have my system connected to my dsl router via LAN.
recently installed Ubuntu 10.10. Everything seems to be working fine on the installation except I have never been able to connect to the internet (I'm on mac connected to the same linksys router at the moment). I've been working on this for several days and have exhausted all the possible causes. Here is my setup.
My setup:
-I have tried running both 10.10 and 10.04 (I have 10.04 installed at the moment)
-I have windows xp on a separate hard drive on the same computer and the internet works fine when I boot in windows
-I have tried both automatic DHCP (which my windows uses) and manually connecting to my network under the IPv4 settings
-my "Connection Information" info under networks manager has all the correct information listed as far as my driver, IP address, Bcast, mask, DNS serves are concerned (except I don't know what 'default route' is for so I can't verify that that is correct.)
-my ethernet connection is wired connection that is connected to a linksys router
-my ethernet driver is sis190
-I can ping my router successfully, but I cannot ping anything (i.e. websites) on the other side of my router
I use Hasee L141 notebook and ever since I installed ubuntu, my internet connection using both wire and wireless does not work but for the windows it works alright. I asked friends to help me but it yielded no result. Is there anything that I'm missing? I re-installed it several times but still had the same problems.Someone please help me. I even tried installing using the wubi.exe but still the same problem.
I have a new laptop with me and I am unable to connect to internet from It. i have a wireless router with WLAN connection. I am able to connect from windows 7 But in ubuntu the network manager doesnt show any WLAN connections at all.. I am a newbie and dont know how to start debugging this Issue. I may like to know,
1. How to ensure that my linux distro has detected network card on my system as the first step
2.Then how to make the wireless connection UP and running.
My father recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my new AMD dualcore, but we have not been able to access the net.we tried resetting the modem/router. Windows XP had no problem getting us online - why is it such an issue with Ubuntu?
Just purchased a Dell Inspiron 580 MT tower pc with Windows Professional. However unable to connect to the network or the internet when I load a copy of Ubuntu Karmic on dual boot. Windows networking and internet working fine. Is this an ethernet adaptor hardware issue? Broadcom NetXtreme 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet controller-PCI Express card Will try later connecting through a usb ethernet adaptor to see if this is really the problem.
I have recently installed ubuntu 9.10. Earlier I had ubuntu 9.04. On that my internet was running perfectly well. After installation I created new connection as I had done for 9.04 version using "Network connections , Edit connections". However, after configuring connection(uname , password etc.) I wasn't able to access Internet. So I tried using "pppoeconf" utility. After using this now whenever I click on network connections applet on top panel , it shows in menu "device not managed".Can somebody point out what went wrong and what to do so as to be able to acess Internet in ubuntu?
I cant connect to the internet wirelessly or with a RJ45 connection. Last week my son came round and thought it was very call the internet worked fine then. Then he downloaded a programme called wireshark. Since the installation of that programme there has been no internet. Even the internet icon on the top bar has gone Aswell as the network manager section has vanished from the preferences menu. I have uninstalled wireshark thinking it will correct its self but havent had much luck. I am running Ubuntu 10.4 (lucid) Kenel Linux 2.6.32-generic GNOME 2.30.2
I'm connecting to a network via a Belkin F7D1101. The adapter appears to be working fine, as I can see various wireless networks available and I am able to connect to my personal wireless network. The problem is that even though I am connected and have a valid IP, I am unable to browse the Internet. I can't even ping the router!
I initially thought it may be an issue with WPA, but I have installed wpa-supplicant and as a means of testing, I turned off WPA on the router, and the issue still stands.
I have dual boot system and on windows I am able to connect to wireless but on Ubuntu I am not able to connect to wireless.
I desire to learn to trouble shoot the problem my self hence I would appreciate if some one guides me How to look for the problem. and how to find what is wrong and right
That is why I am not posting any output here but rather would like to learn to solve the problem by myself
I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my Lenovo ideapad S10e. Under the network manager it says that firmware is not installed for the wirless card but that is something for a different day. On the ethernet connection it attempts to connect via dhcp and then comes up saying it is disconnected. I attempted to set it as a static connection, when i do that it shows that its connected but I still can not connect to the internet.
I have a multiboot system running several versions of linux which do not all use the same software for handling wifi connections or have the same kernel. They have all stopped being able to connect to the internet in the last few days. My Windows 7 set up still connects though it seems to be a slow to establish a connection.Could BT have changed something and if so what?
I installed Ubuntu 11.04 and am unable to connect to wireless internet. I looked under additional drivers and there doesn't seem to be anything listed there.
I have a Samsung netbook with a built in hspa modem. I would like to create a wireless connection to my iphone so that i may share the internet connection. The iphone however picks up the network but is unable to connect to the internet.I am running 10.10. Can anyone please help as I have trie dto find a soln to this problem.
I have a ZTE MF100 3G internet USB modem working fine under ubuntu 10.04 but, there is a little problem:-It does connect in 2 modes: 2G and 3G. If 3G signal is fairly strong, downloading speed reaches 200 KB/s for 600 MB/Day, then for the rest of the day it switches to 2G mode with 15 KB/s max downloading speed. If 3G signal is weak, it switches automatically to 2G, and that's what I hate. Under Windows, I can manually force the modem to connect in 3G mode even if the signal is weak.
I have been using Mepis on a dual boot computer for over a year. I want to give ubuntu a try so I made a bootable usb stick from ubuntu's live cd. Everything works as advertised even saved files and changes. I can't connect to the internet. I am connected via a 2wire modem to a linksys router thats connected to my computer through a ethernet cable. the router is for connecting my son's computer. Anyway I have no problems connecting from windows or Mepis. Whats strange is I can even connect when booting directly off the Ubuntu live CD.
When I try connect when booting from my usb stick I get a can not connect error. I am using the auto eth0 function and everything appears fine. I compared my settings from when booted from the Ubuntu live CD and they are Identical. I used network tools and I can ping my IP address but when trying to ping a web address I get the can not connect error. I am beginning to think ubuntu has my USB stick confused with a CD but not sure how to correct it. Here's some additional INFO:
I am having trouble getting F9 to connect to the internet via Firefox. I can can get to the internet via ping ( both ip address and www.whatever.com) so it appears that DNS is working. But YUM is not working-error 110 connection timed out.I have disabled the firewall and SElinux.I had a similar problem when I was loading F10 and Scott pointed me at a fix that requires me to get the dnsmasq update but with yum not working I am at a standstill.
