Ref; Ubuntu 10.04 new clean installation, fully updated. I have set sharing for some folders so they can be seen on my windows network ethernet. However the sharing option is lost when I next turn on the computer. Can I make the sharing permanent?

View 8 Replies View Relatedfor christmas my parents got both my younger sister and i acer mini computers, model d250-1958. my sister was trying to change her password that lets herself as a particular user log in. somehpw she messed up the password and its not what she thought it was and now she doesn't have any way of accessing anything. i thought that there might be an ovveride system or a reseting trick. i've looked in the manual but cant find anything of the sort for either of the two options.

I have read that you can easily disable hibernate from System>Preferences>Power Management but as far as i can see I have no options in there to do such.I found this and similar pages: URL... I do not have the key named can_hibernate anywhere under my gnome-power-manager.I read that this is the option that only removes the "hibernate" option from the power menu, but actually does not disable the service, can anyone confirm this?URL...
Just curious but disabling hibernate in linux save you hardisk space like it does in windows (still quite new here)?
I just installed ubuntu on my d620.The wireless card seems to exist and looks fine but I don't know how to turn it on.It says the network is disabled everywhere I look but I can't find the option to turn it on.I know this is probably simple. Below is the output from various commands.I included my service tag which you can use on the dell site to find specifics about my hardware.I can't do ifconfig wlan0 up which is the only solution I've found online so far.

been looking for a easy way for simple users (newbies) to share folders over the internet with friends. I found almost nothing about it, in both Windows and Ubuntu, as people usually recommend online sharing (as dropbox and Ubuntu One, which is not what I ask for) or ssh, ftp and related, which are usually not trivial to set up for simple user and you need to install a nice GUI for the client.Why isn't there a simple way as a right-click menu option, then choosing some user/password and having it available over some iport? Something like local network file sharing.This seems like an incredible tool to have.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just got a new Compaq/HP netbook with Windows 7, and I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 (using my main Ubuntu system) and put it on a USB stick to load it "alongside" Windows.
At install phase on the new machine there is no option shown to add Ubuntu alongside Windows; only two options are shown, to erase the disk entirely and load Ubuntu, or the advanced option to select the disk partitioning manually.
I don't want to do either of these!
What happened to the third option, share the disk between operating systems?
I have used Linux for years, and don't want Windows, but it is safer to be able to boot up Windows for some things (testing ADSL line for Orange France, for instance).
I'm using Gnome for the first time (after a long time with KDE) and am trying to share a folder the easy way. After installing nautilus-share (and samba, samba-common and samba-common-bin)I can right click on a folder and make it shared. Problem is that the option 'Guest access (for people with no user account)' is always grayed out.On some Ubuntu forums I saw people fix it by purging and reinstalling samba but that didn't work for me.I know how to manually setup a share in samba, just want to figure out why this isn't working and how to get this going.

But I can't remember how I set this preference, and much clicking on the panel and the Turn off button hasn't revealed how I do this thingSo: is it still possible, in 10.04, to set things up so I can shut down without having to reply to a pesky dialogue asking me if I'm sure? What do I change to get Ubuntu option back? OH, I also had to do a checkpoint restore prior to that but it was after I had installed Ubunto (I think). I used TrueCrypt to encrypt my drive, but in doing so I lost my Ubuntu boot option (as TrueCrypt boot takes up the MBR). So now I'm trying again, using TrueCrypt's option of multiple OS installed on same drive. At the moment, it won't let me do that since the Grub boot is on the same partition as the Win7 bootI. In a nutshell, I need to move Grub to another partition so that I can load from that boot option once I <esc> from the TrueCrypt boot. created a new partition for Grub, but don't know how to move it. Every time when I tried to turn off the computer by pressing the 'shut down the computer' button at the upper right corner of the screen and selecting 'Shut down', it will first appear as if it is shutting down normally, but in less than half minute, it stops at a console-like screen with the last few lines of text

When turn off the computer he is half-second off, and then immediately the same turn himself again. Such problems with Lenny, OpenSolaris 2009.06, Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 was not. Noticed on Debian 6.0, Ubuntu 10.04 and above, OpenSUSE 11.4. And only on my computer. How do I fix this?

There was a problem after I finished the install - after I rebooted no menu appeared, the pc just hung on a black screen with flashing cursor, so I put the linux DVD in again and rain a repair. It repaired the boot menu but now there is no option to boot into windows.
