In 9.10 I had compiz turned on, and had enabled the widget layer so I could hide the top & bottom panels (pressing F9 displays the widget layer).However I don't see an option to turn on the widget layer in the Compiz settings in 10.01?

I know I have to set up the rule under Widget Layer > Behaviour > Widget Windows but i have not been able to identify the correct rule.
I backed everything up and did a complete re-install of the system to 10.10. I had a widget layer with compiz before I did this and now it is not even an option in the preferences. Am I missing something?
I was running 10.10 before as well and it was there.
I would like to put both Tomboy and Gwibber inside the widget layer, but so far I've only managed to add one or the other, I can add one by putting:

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04
When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)
I was hoping someone could tell me how to turn off the basic windows effects in compiz but keep it turned on so I can use something like Docky.
The reason is because nautilus takes a few painful seconds to open up with the effects turned on and some times I end up clicking a folder etc a second time thinking it hasn't opened.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with nVidia 8600M graphics card. I'm running 10.10 Maverick, and I've set up CompizConfig settings manager. Everything works just dandy, but it will sometimes disable all settings. Restarting X fixes everything, but I can't figure out why it disables in the first place. When disabled, all the visual effects are disabled (wiggly windows, transparency, desktop cube, etc.) The settings in System>Preferences>appearance>Visual Effects is set to Extra, and all my CompizConfig settings are the same. I haven't figured out any way to get it working again except by restarting X.
So far, the only times it has disabled like that are when I've set the computer to "suspend" or "hibernate", and a couple times when it has gone to screensaver while running on battery. It never does it while plugged in (but plugging it in will not restore the graphic effects) I have no idea how to keep the graphic effects working. Perhaps it's related to me unplugging my computer and running on battery? If so, is there any way to turn off this setting?
I had installed SUSE KDE and then installed Gnome too. I had chosen Suse as distro that has incredible KDE performance, however Gnome is great too. I hoped old oversimplistic gnome with disgusting theme, but it was great and fast. Then I had run compiz. I want compiz only on the gnome, on KDE I want Kwin. I could override compiz with

Some time ago, more than a year, and while using linux mint, I had created a shortcut to turn off and on the decoration of the focused window. Now, with compiz settings manager (not the simple one) I cannot find such an option. Any ideas?

I have read that you can easily disable hibernate from System>Preferences>Power Management but as far as i can see I have no options in there to do such.I found this and similar pages: URL... Just curious but disabling hibernate in linux save you hardisk space like it does in windows (still quite new here)?
I hate this compiz fusion crap on knoppix 6.. I know you can turn it off using 'knoppix no3d' on the boot prompt using a live disk. But how do you save that cheatcode permanently for a hd-installed knoppix sys?

All seems to run fine, and before the yesterday afternoon upgrade, compiz appears disabled and each time I try to enable it I get the error message.I checked the direct rendering is working. Google Earth works fine also, so all seems to be OK.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been looking around on the Internet for a comprehensive tutorial on 'how Compiz works', 'what all the settings mean' and 'using' Compiz; but, so far, have only seen things describing how to do a certain thing or other. I've gone into Compiz Configuration Settings Manager and poked around but what I've seen in there seems extremely technical (in other words - I don't know what the heck these settings mean or what would happen if I changed one of them).So far I've manged to get the magnifying glass thing and I have wobbly windows (don't know if I can take credit for that though). So I see all these amazing demonstrations of it on you tube and whatnot and I wish I could do some of that stuff but I'd really like to approach this by learning all about Compiz from A to Z rather than learn this thing and then that thing, etc.
Is there anything out there that you know of? Ann ebook or something? I saw a book called: "Compiz Fusion" URL... that really, interests me but it is not available as an eBook (believe me I looked and looked and looked) and it's pretty expensive.
I used OpenSUSE today and in one of the options for Rotate Cube (in compiz) was something that let me adjust to what angle I could allow the cube to go up and down. If I set it to 360 degrees, I was able to rotate the cube in any which direction I pleased. Can I do this on Ubuntu?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy system goes through slow periods where it just crawls and others where it's fine, but I'm wondering which service settings are OK to just shut off to give me a bit more oomph when I boot up.The others I'm pretty OK with like spam assassin, dictionary server and so on, but some of the others i wonder if they only serve to slow things down..Also..I live in a very dusty environment and I KNOW the fans and other parts get caked with dust and it wouldn't surprise me if the dust got so bad it just stops the fans completely so once in a while I use my air compressor to blow the crud out and I usually get covered myself, but how safe is using the compressor? It's not the type that typically fills up with condensed water droplets so that isn't a super critical issue..It's a small 1 hp deal, elect drive and so on.. Safe enough? It's all I have and/or can afford..

It will save setting thru "Simple-settings-manager". In addition, some settings will not take effect immediately. Example: The "viewport switcher" in "Desktop-wall". View 3 Replies View RelatedSince a while ago, any changes I make to my Compiz settings are not remembered when I log in again.
On starting a new gnome session, Compiz is firstly always disabled ("Visual Effects" in gnome-appearance-properties is set to "None"). I can enable the "Extra" option, but when I open gnome-appearance-properties a second time, the option is not selected (although Compiz will now be running), and when I log out and back in, Compiz will be disabled again.
After enabling it manually, I find that secondly, the "Desktop Cube" largedesktop feature is replaced by "Desktop Wall". I can change this in ccsm, and the changes take effect immediately, but when I start ccsm a second time, the changes are gone (the "Desktop Cube" checkbox is unselected). After logging out and back in, the old settings are in effect again.
Since ccsm will forget the changes even before I log out, I suspect it is somehow unable to save them. I've tried looking at the stderr output of gnome-appearance-properties and ccsm, but haven't seen anything that looks relevant.
Searching for what appears to be "missing" CompizConfig settings in the CompizConfig Settings Manager. How to change the "Cube" into a "Cylinder" and how to enable floating windows (windows that seem to hover just over the cube when it is rotated. Were these eliminated? They were both available in 9.10.

I was playing around with compiz too much and kinda messed up some stuff. Is there anyway I can just go back to how stuff was? Without system restore, I don't know of a way I can restore my previous compiz settings.
