Ubuntu :: Can't Turn On Personal File Sharing
Apr 25, 2010I am running Ubuntu 10.4 and I am unable to turn on Personal file sharing. The error I get is that required files are not installed. I need to know how to correct this.

Networking :: Personal File Sharing On Fedora 14?
Mar 8, 2011My wife and I activated the 'Personal File Sharing' on our two Fedora #9 laptops. We can exchange photos and text files via our "public" folders, just fine. Entire setup took less than 20 minutes. We have not been able to get the Fedora #14 version of 'Personal File Sharing' to work using same, online and 'in system', help directions for both the F#9 and F#14. After four eves of looking I have not found any more detailed, install/activate help files anywhere. I can't ask my system manager because that's us. At this point the only thing I can think of is that there may be some part of the F#14 security structure that needs to be addressed and tweaked.

Aug 23, 2010I enabled Personal File Sharing under System > Preferences > Personal File Sharing. I clicked on Share public files on network and closed it. Then I put some files that I wanted to share in the Public folder and I went to another computer that was on the same router (they are both running Fedora 13) and I clicked on the Network tab (bookmark) in nautilus and there are no files there.

Mar 27, 2010I just installed the beta 10.04 LTS with Gnome Version: 2.29.92. I want to to create a network share but when I navigate to system>preferences>personal file sharing I can not create a share. The message indicates that the feature is not available because the required package is not installed. I tried to reinstall gnome-user-share and in reinstalled without issue but I still get the same thing. What am I missing? How can I create a network share?

If I go to system - preferences - personal file sharing, I cannot select "share files over the network." The panel is greyed out and the message "This feature cannot be enabled because the required packages are not installed on your computer" is shown
It ever so usefully doesn't tell me what those packages are though! - It'd be nice to have more useful error messages or the ability to click to install them...
Anyway, what do I have to do to get this going again?! I've installed everything to do with samba, webdav that I can find but still no cigar...

Jan 27, 2011I've been searching on google but the only solution seems to be to change the name of the files (which didn't work). Is there any way to remove the banner? I'm not 3yrs old I know how to share files and don't need to be reminded where i can receive files.

Jun 23, 2010I am wondering if anyone has figured out how to turn off the file locking in openoffice 3.2. I have been searching the net for solutions, trying out the fixes, and as of right now I have not been able to find a way to stop the creation of lock files.
I have tried editing both /usr/bin/soffice and /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice as described in the links (below), but this has not helped.

According to this thread, the method I tried (setting SAL_ENABLE_FILE_LOCKING=0) was based on earlier versions of openoffice.org It no longer works because as of openoffice.org 3 the file locking is built into the program.

I want to be able to access and modify the files on it from any computer remotely.Is what I am looking for an "SSH Tunnel" to fileshare over the Internet? If this is what I want, please help me find the resources for doing this. I dont even know where to begin!I am running Ubuntu 10.10.I am not looking for remote computing. I cannot guarantee that the remote computer I am on will have Ubuntu on it. I want the files to show up like they would over normal SMB/SAMBA networking. I just want to be on any computer in the world, enter in an IP address, enter a password, connect, and be able to access my files.

May 27, 2010Problem: Neither Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 64 bit machine can access any shared folders on windows PC's, or on the other Ubuntu machine. However, my windows machine CAN access the folders I've set up to share with Samba.
When I click Places>Network it FINDS the other computers, but when I double click one of the other machines the "wait" pointer comes up and then it says: blah blah blah... "The folder could not be displayed: Sorry, could not display all the contents of "Windows shares on debbie-desktop": DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken."
Why can the windows computers access shared files FROM linux, but the linux computers can't access anything non-local?

Jun 23, 2011I keep trying and keep trying to set up my father's documents folder on our PC running Ubuntu 11.04 as a shared folder across the network with Windows computers, and I keep getting error messages like this one:
"'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /home/frank as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this."
I currently have his home folder set up so anyone on our PC running Ubuntu can access and change the files, at the moment. I also want to know if I can set up this file sharing with Windows, but still have all his files protected with a password?

Feb 27, 2010I just installed 9.10 and I tried to share specific folders by right clicking and selecting share. Not a problem.
However when I goto a Windows machine I see the share but cannot connect, says incorrect login/ password. I used the same login/ pass for the linux box and I created a new user and I still get the same results. What am I doing wrong?
I want to use the GUI for this please. When I edit the smb.conf I don't see the share.
