For some reasons I need to configure ubuntu in such way that it would turn off the computer if X-server or GDM hasn't started (but user is able to log in). By the way, what are the reasons for such situation besides errors with video drivers?
I was told that I should write a script, but I have no idea how to write scripts and where I should place it (I suppose in init.d with some parameters).
I am using ubuntu 9.10 and I want to know if I can power on a remote computer working on windows server 2003.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an iBook G3 and about 4 months ago after Mac OSX was corrupted I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on it. During the install the screen was divided and partly blacked out but when I installed it, the resolution was fine and the OS encompassed the whole screen.
After a few weeks everything on the screen started to turn pink until all the colours on the whole screen were a shade of pink! I decided that I would abandon my laptop as I had a fully functioning Ubuntu desktop which was my preferable computer to use anyway.
Following the release of Ubuntu 10.04 I decided that I would try a fresh install on my laptop. When I started the install I was disappointed to find that the screen was divided and everything was shaded pink. I went ahead with the install regardless hoping that everything would be fine once I installed Ubuntu. Once again I was let down, the screen was still divided and pink. I have included some pictures for you to have a look at.
I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly.It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

But since then, the Grub has started to display (I have only 9.10 installed, using the entire Disk). Also, unless I select the entry, Grub does not automatically start. The startup takes nearly 1.5 minutes. And, the Login screen, after the installation of Ubuntu Studio GDM, is much slower. I removed the Ubuntu-studio GDM package, still it takes about 20 seconds to allow me to enter Username and password. Any idea?

When turn off the computer he is half-second off, and then immediately the same turn himself again. Such problems with Lenny, OpenSolaris 2009.06, Windows and Ubuntu 9.04 was not. Noticed on Debian 6.0, Ubuntu 10.04 and above, OpenSUSE 11.4. And only on my computer. How do I fix this?

First, started off that I couldn't turn off or reset my computer using the power buttons, it simply logs out.

When I turned it on again my icons like Trash bin, Netowrk meter, Keyboard layout have disappeared from my panels...
And it doesn't shut off anymore (it did for a couple times only).

The only think I am not sure is the hard disk click sound only when I shut down the computer. It happens right before the power is totally cutoff. I normally do not have this sound. I presume that this maybe due to the fact that the head goes back to original position but I am not sure. Is this normal?

To explain a little, I currently have a WinXP Pro pc that provides file storage for the users in our home (spouse, kids, self). On this pc I have a windows program ACRONIS running to perform automatic backup of every ones stuff. This has saved me many hours of headaches when someone has a HDD or PC failure. Everyone in the household directs all of their downloading activities to a download partition where I have an anti-virus & anti-malware program monitoring all new entries. This too seems to have been a good decision over the years. I'm trying to sort out which version of Ubuntu will be the most logical entry point.
I expect the questions I am seeking insight for are the normal getting started stuff. Using several different search criteria, I did not hit upon existing threads for the topic If there is a more appropriate forum / sub-forum, please let me know and I will take this question (thread) there.
