Debian :: Easy File Sharing Option In Gnome Grayed Out?

Mar 30, 2010

I'm using Gnome for the first time (after a long time with KDE) and am trying to share a folder the easy way. After installing nautilus-share (and samba, samba-common and samba-common-bin)I can right click on a folder and make it shared. Problem is that the option 'Guest access (for people with no user account)' is always grayed out.On some Ubuntu forums I saw people fix it by purging and reinstalling samba but that didn't work for me.I know how to manually setup a share in samba, just want to figure out why this isn't working and how to get this going.

Server :: Easy File Sharing On Windows... Without SMB?

Jun 16, 2010

Question for the sys admin types:So, say you want to do file sharing in an environment with a lot of Windows clients, but you want the shared data on a Linux server. You can use SAMBA, and that will make all the Windows clients happy (provided, of course, that you can get SAMBA working correctly). But is this your only option?I mean, obviously you can use ssh/sftp. But the Windows sftp clients I have tried don't make the file sharing process as simple for non-techies: you either just get a command-line, or you get some kind of two-pane application view like with filezilla or cuteFTP; it isn't as integrated into the desktop as what you get when using native SMB file sharing. So, is there Windows software you can install that can make the file sharing experience very non-expert friendly with some protocol like ssh/sftp or NFS?

Ubuntu :: 252 Updates Shown But Option Buttons Grayed Out

Mar 9, 2009

I just installed Ubuntu 8.1 on a Mac Pro using VMWare. It prompted me that updates are due so I selected to update. Now it's at the Update Manager showing 252 updates and all boxes such as close, check, and install updates, are all greyed out and the cursor is showing the circle that it's working on something. I had this happen a few days ago so I rebooted. This is the 2nd time trying this and I'm stuck at the same prompt.

I have even manually gone into the update manager and selected even to check for updates and it freezes up. I have tried to search for a specific file and the same thing happens. I have used previous versions of Ubuntu and never had this problem. I even went as far as doing a fresh install and had the same problem.

Fedora :: Gnome Personal File Sharing Not Working?

Aug 23, 2010

I enabled Personal File Sharing under System > Preferences > Personal File Sharing. I clicked on Share public files on network and closed it. Then I put some files that I wanted to share in the Public folder and I went to another computer that was on the same router (they are both running Fedora 13) and I clicked on the Network tab (bookmark) in nautilus and there are no files there.

Ubuntu Networking :: Getting The File Sharing Working In Gnome 3?

Apr 29, 2011

trying to share a few folders with Windows PCs. Usually I just right click and choose "Sharing Options" from nautilus and choose to share it. This isn't there in gnome 3 via gnome3 ppa for Ubuntu. I've tried installing and adding the folders I wanted using samba configuration tool and gadmin-samba tools. I've also installed just about anything that could potentially have anything to do with file sharing from synaptic including:

samba, nautilus-share, smbclient, windbind

and whole lot of other stuff in hope that I had just been missing stuff. I also booted my laptop which is running 11.04 with Unity and I right clicked and selected "Sharing Options" like the usual way and shared a folder and then installed gadmin-samba and the samba configuration tools and the folder I shared wasn't included there. Meaning it isn't using the same thing? Also the only thing installed when shareing a folder is samba and some libpam-something. Two files! Then shares perfectly! Why is it so difficult to set up a simple share with Gnome 3? No matter what I do I boot into Windows on my laptop and try to connect to my network share the same way I always have and it doesn't work.

Debian :: Gnome-sessions Option Not Available At Logon?

Jan 30, 2011

I have been running Lenny with the non-free nVidia drivers for a while now, but decided to run testing RC2.When I was done my monitor had a solid blue-gray background and the mouse pointer, but none of the GUI parts displayed (blank). After a couple of checks I went back to the gdm logon screen and opened 'sessions' to _not_ find Gnome as one of the choices. So I logged into Gnome(failsafe) and got my full GUI.Console (F1) and xterm also work fine.Trying to get my Gnome Desktop back. GDM is working and I have the session choice for TWM, but with Gnome(failsafe) working I haven't tried it yet to see if it works.

Debian Multimedia :: Save Gnome Minimize Window Always On Top Option?

May 15, 2011

When I open either my user or root terminal, by right-clicking on the Minimise Window option in the top right-hand corner (beside the Restore Window and Close Window options), if I tick the Always on Top option from the drop-down menu, then the terminal Window (or any other window when this option is selected) will not minimise automatically on clicking the mouse in another open window like, for example, Iceweasel. This is particularly useful, for example, when cutting and pasting commands from the browser to the terminal and I recommend it. But how can the Always on Top option be set to permanent for a specific program, like the the Terminal so that it will be saved for the next time one logs in to a Gnome session?

Debian :: File Sharing Via Mapped Directory ?

Dec 13, 2010

My friends and I want to have a central server where we can share our files. I would like it to be accessible to each client (friend) by simply logging onto their VPN client and have the shared directory appear on their "My Computer" as a hard drive. It will be a Debian Lenny server that is accessed by Windows computers, and they'll be able to read and write whatever they like.

We do this same thing at work, but I don't know where to start. To access the file server at work from home, I just run our VPN client and I have access to all the drives I do at work. This is exactly what I'd like to do, but at my place. I'd like to know what applications I need to get to make this realizable, like if I need to use Apache, Samba, OpenVPN, etc. I can learn fast, I just need direction.

Eventually I want to evolve this project into something more, but I figured this would be a good starting point in learning server applications.

I was wondering if there was anything I could use to allow the same read and write acces that is on my pxe machines on my new palm pre plus. That would save me the hassle of syncing all my documents and movies etc to my phone every day or so.

So basically what I am asking is if I can use the current 5tb nfs raid and mount it some way to a remote ip that I can access fully on my phone without the need for a flash plugin. Btw the phone is homebrew app ready.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Trivial Option For Folder Sharing Over Internet?

Apr 12, 2010

been looking for a easy way for simple users (newbies) to share folders over the internet with friends. I found almost nothing about it, in both Windows and Ubuntu, as people usually recommend online sharing (as dropbox and Ubuntu One, which is not what I ask for) or ssh, ftp and related, which are usually not trivial to set up for simple user and you need to install a nice GUI for the client. Why isn't there a simple way as a right-click menu option, then choosing some user/password and having it available over some iport? Something like local network file sharing. This seems like an incredible tool to have.

Ubuntu Installation :: Sharing Disc With Windows 7 - No Option Showing?

Mar 24, 2011

I have just got a new Compaq/HP netbook with Windows 7, and I have downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 (using my main Ubuntu system) and put it on a USB stick to load it "alongside" Windows.

At install phase on the new machine there is no option shown to add Ubuntu alongside Windows; only two options are shown, to erase the disk entirely and load Ubuntu, or the advanced option to select the disk partitioning manually.

I don't want to do either of these!

What happened to the third option, share the disk between operating systems?

I have used Linux for years, and don't want Windows, but it is safer to be able to boot up Windows for some things (testing ADSL line for Orange France, for instance).
