Ubuntu :: Locks Computer When Ever Left Alone How To Turn Off?
Jul 10, 2010
so every time I want to watch a video or let my computer play some music anything that leaves it without input the screen dulls then the computer locks it self even in the middle of when I am watching something.I have already set every power management setting to never turn off and it is still doing it is there any thing else that controls ubuntu's automatic functions that I have missed that would let my computer stay on without locking up,I am running the most recent version of ubuntu on a Samsung NC-10 netbook if that helps

About a week after installing 11.04, I started noticing that my computer basically locks up after leaving it for many hours. When I come back, I cant get any programs to respond. I click on Firefox and it takes about one minute for it to finally respond. If I try to launch Konsole, it locks up too. But suddenly all programs start responding at the same time, after about one minute.
This is very frustrating and I just feel the problem is zeitgeist. Of course I am not sure because I cant even run System Monitor to check the problem since I cant run any apps for about a minute. By the time I run System Monitor everything is working again.

so i just bought a new Sony Vaio laptop and things are seeming to run great. However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters

Recently, ive been having this problem with ubuntu in which while im watching a movie and thus not doing anything else, everything locks up except for the sound (if i attempt to move mouse doens't work) and then it goes into the login screen. Previously, ubuntu would fade away into the login screen.
So is there any way to prevent ubuntu from going to the login screen if the user is not moving the mouse? non-fading login screen?
edit: oh and i also have this sometimes occuring problem where i type my password to login, it logs in, and then it immediately goes back to login screen. A second login works. probably not relevant

Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, the "Switch User" functionality no longer works. I had hoped that upgrading to 10.10 might resolve the issue, but no joy. I am using 32bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Levono R51 laptop, with three users. 9.10 was installed from a LiveCD, and I have partitioned the hard drive so that OS is in the first partition, and the three home directories are in the second partition (just in case I need to do a complete re-installation from LiveCD). Most of time only one person uses the laptop, but if a second person tries to switch from the current session and log in, they are greeted with the following;
-- a black horizontal line (approx top quarter of the screen)
-- a purple background with the Ubuntu title and 5 red dots (lower 3/4 of screen) -- but no login screen
-- moving the mouse renders a white box (approx 1x1 inches) with some black marks
The original user can recover their session with Ctrl-Alt-F7, but this essentially makes the laptop only usable for one person (one active login) unless the original user logs off.

I am running edubuntu in one of the classes of the school i support. My problem is that the children cannot remember the password for the computer if it locks. I have it set to auto login on the class user and I have disabled the screensaver asking for a password on resume, and disabled the powerdown options. So in theory it should stay on the desktop until they shutdown. However there is still the option to lock the computer and i am sure that they will find it and manage to lock themselves out of the computer! I am a linux beginner, but i have followed a few guides on the internet. I could really do with having their user with no password, so if they accidentally lock the computer they only have to click unlock to resume their computing.

I just installed 10.04.2 Desktop. Full install, reformatted all partitions. Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX200 with Dell 781p monitor Dell mouse and kybd.
All appeared to install well and as expected.
The computer has locked up 4 times, now. Whenever I attempt to use the mouse to drag a window to a different place on the desktop the monitor goes half black (bottom half of screen) and I loose the ability to use the mouse or keyboard to provide input. The only recourse is to shut it down hard and boot up again.

First, I upgraded to F15. All went smooth. No problem. But if I pull up a terminal in KDE via menu->utilities->Terminal, I get a terminal that shows only 3 lines. If I try to increase the size by pulling the edge it locks up the computer. Functions otherwise. This is Gnome Terminal 3.0.1. X terminal works fine. So does Konsole. But not the above application from the menu.

I seem unable to get an nvidia driver working properly after upgrading to the latest kernel with Fedora 11.Here is my laptop and its specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...reg_R1002_USEN[URL]I've tried both the kmod and akmod unsuccessfully. Everytime it gives me a black screen on boot, I can fix the problem by popping in the LiveCD, and changing the xorg.conf file back to the backup. Here are the errors/warnings from my boot.log file:
Code:
WARNING: Deprecated config file /etc/modprobe.conf, all config files belong into /etc/modprobe.d/.

I vaguely remember in 8.04 and 9.04, there was a way to set a preference so that when I clicked on Shut Down, the computer would shut down without asking me if I was sure. But I can't remember how I set this preference, and much clicking on the panel and the Turn off button hasn't revealed how I do this thingSo: is it still possible, in 10.04, to set things up so I can shut down without having to reply to a pesky dialogue asking me if I'm sure? How do I go about setting that preference?

In 8.04 even a non-power user could turn off the computer even if other people was logged in, not anymore. How do I enable it again. I don't want to let all my user be power-users, but I will let them turn off the computer locally even if someone else is logged in.

After I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, I could normally turn off my computer. Every time when I tried to turn off the computer by pressing the 'shut down the computer' button at the upper right corner of the screen and selecting 'Shut down', it will first appear as if it is shutting down normally, but in less than half minute, it stops at a console-like screen with the last few lines of text
Code:
gnal 15, shutting down
init: dbus main process (775)
killed by TERM signal
init: Disconnected from system bus
and then stopped there. I then have to manually and physically power off the computer.

For some reasons I need to configure ubuntu in such way that it would turn off the computer if X-server or GDM hasn't started (but user is able to log in). By the way, what are the reasons for such situation besides errors with video drivers?
I was told that I should write a script, but I have no idea how to write scripts and where I should place it (I suppose in init.d with some parameters).

I run Debian on my old computer to use it as a server. Everything is configured properly so that it functions as a web server. Now that summer comes closer I will not be home most of the time and I was thinking to use part of my server to upload/download files. Is there some nice package that provides an easy interface for such a task? I am reffering to something like the wikimedia package but for just downloading/uploading files.

It seems that the updgrade that I made in my ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 turned to be a downgrade... I am having some glitches here!
First, started off that I couldn't turn off or reset my computer using the power buttons, it simply logs out.
I found a similar problem in a thread and I got this solution:
Code:
Then I forced it to shut off with the command: sudo poweroff
When I turned it on again my icons like Trash bin, Netowrk meter, Keyboard layout have disappeared from my panels...
And it doesn't shut off anymore (it did for a couple times only).

My computer won't shut off unless I just hold down the power button. Everytime I try System > Shut Off it just turns off, then restarts. My computer screen will sometimes just 'turn black' and become unresponsive, and I have to shut it down and restart. (The longest I waited was a few minutes with no response. How do I get customized mouse pointers? When I download something and 'extract' it, how do I know which file I'm supposed to open after I click 'show the files'? I've downloaded a few things and extracted them but I'm assuming I must do more, since they are not on my applications. Which is the best browser to use on Fedora? I love Opera, but for some reason my internet is twice as slow on Opera as it is on Firefox or Chrome?
