Ubuntu :: Setup A Print Server In House?
Jan 14, 2010I have an old clunker box with no HD insalled in it. it does have a cd rom however, and i would be able to run DSL from it with that alone.
i want to set this box up as a print server, since as it is all of the computers in the house must actually be moved to the printer and connected to it via USB to print.
i am looking to simplify this for everyones benefit, here.
the box i am going to use will *not* be connected to a monitor, KB or mouse once it is ready to be left on its own. i will use these to set it up, but after that, id prefer a way to http: into it or FTP into it.
i am on ubuntu, the rest of the house is on XP. i figure i will have to configure the computer with SAMBA in order to set it up for sharing, is that correct?
i will be connecting the computer to the wireless router.
basically, id just like help with a roadmap on what needs to be done to set this up. i dont need step by step directions on everything, just an idea of where to start. id really like to get this setup within a few hours.
Ubuntu Networking :: VPN - Can Connect In One Part Of The House But Not Another
Feb 1, 2011I'm trying to connect to Ipredator. If I plug my laptop into the wired network in one part of my house, I am able to connect to the VPN. If I connect to the wifi in another part of the house, network manager fails to connect to Ipredator. I have a wall-plugged wireless range extender, Netgear WGX102, connected to the wired network in the part of the house where Ipredator works, and it is providing the wireless access point in the part of the house where Ipredator does not work.
I checked the Netgear website and they don't seem to have any newer firmware for it. I've tried everything I can think of in terms of changing settings in the wireless range extender. Am I doing something wrong, and if so, what? If the problem is with the wireless range extender, then what can I get to replace it?
Server :: Setup House Mostly (for The First Time) For Backups And File Sharing?

Backround I am attempting to setup a server in my house mostly(for the first time) for backups and file sharing. It is important to me that file permissions are preserved. So its my understanding that I must use idmapd in order for this to work. As of now I'm only working with the linux distros while osx will be dealt with once these two work together. portmapper is up and running, along with lockd on both machines. Firewalls are also down on both machines for now. The server side was all setup using the GUI interface with no extra options selected. Problem When attempting to "mount -t nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" I get an error operation not permitted with no error printing in /var/log/message. If I use "mount -t -o nolock nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" it mounts just fine. Ive checked both machines multiple times to make sure that lockd is up and running. In the idmapd.conf file I the domain as "localdomain" for both machines but I doubt that is right; like I stated above this is my first attempt at a server. I'm assuming the problem is a whole missing step that involves some kind of id mapping server I need to setup.

Jan 9, 2010im having some problems trying to have multipul pc's at my house being VNC servers. I have one thats running ubuntu 8.10 and it has its own ip and its own port of 5900, the usual vnc port number. That is my server. Then i have my main pc that has its own ip as well and its own port number of 5901. After some research i found that the port numbers start at 5900 and go up by one for vnc. So my main issue is how do i tell my vnc client to look at a port other than the standard 5900?
Iv been googling trying to figure out how to configure vnc to look to a different port.

Jun 16, 2010There are a number of USB devices that can make Skype work with an existing home phone network, but most I've seen require Windows to work. I already have an always on headless Linux server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 (no GUI installed), so does anyone know of software and hardware that'll work with my setup to enable one of the analog lines in my home to work with Skype?
Also it seems most of the USB to Phone adapters are being discontinued and Skype doesn't even list any on their site. Do you guys know if they're phasing these devices out?

Mar 24, 2010I would like to install a surveillance system from my barn to my house. I have used linux based distros for some time. Currently using ubuntu. Need four cameras. Wifi or wireless. Audio and video. Color and Infrared. Not sure if I want a PC or DVR interface. I am very interested in supporting hardware outfits that support open source (FOSS). The barn is located four hundred feet away from the house. No problem with line of sight. I'm getting too old to drag my behind up to the barn in the middle of the night when newborns arrive.

May 22, 2010Alright so i just wanted to try and get remote desktop connections running so i can access files on the other computers in my house. For my first try i went after my laptop. I'm using rdesktop.
First couple times i tried i typed in

After about 15 seconds it would pop back with

I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:

But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.

Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal

Mar 31, 2010I have a remote virtual server for a few websites, it's running on Fedora Core release 6 (Zod). I want to setup an FTP user so I can have someone do some work for me. He only needs very limited access. I have searched for help and thought I found out what I needed to do, but when I try to test the connection, after the password is sent I get the message "530 Login incorrect", followed by "Critical Error", "Could not connect to server". (I am using FileZilla for my FTP client) Below is what I did to add the user

"thisisit" is the name of the directory I want to give access to and "myuser" is the user I am adding. I use passwd myuser to add a password. That login works fine. I have looked at the passwd file and both users seem to be setup the same, yet the new user does not work. In ubuntu, I can connect and surf the web/internet but i cannot access the setup page.
When I try to type the "http://dlinkap/" to my browser then the browser will redirect it to google search.
I try 192.168.1.1, I can access my linksys router. but my dlink access point, i cannot access the setup page.

Apr 12, 2011I am a (somewhat) newbie to Linux (but have an extensive Windows background), and I have just installed Debian Squeeze in an old EeePc 701 4G using the netinst version only with the following packages:

Now I would like to install Debian in my main laptop, but I think it won't be able to connect to any wireless networks during setup and before installing firmware-brcm80211 and wireless-tools (its wireless card is a Broadcom 43224AG). That being, and to avoid connecting the computer directly to the router (it is not easy), I would like to bridge the EeePc's wireless connection to my laptop using a cable. I tried using the instructions found at the Debian Wiki, but I couldn't set it up properly.

Well after some setting but I cannot recall teh exact details. Due to certain reasons, I have to re-install Fedora 10. However, this time the wireless device is not working (The system recognized it and the driver is working ok but not able to connect to the access point and I caanot find a place to check the available wireless network list. I used WEP password protection so need to see the network list and select the network for prompt of the password entry.)

Here are the instructions I followed to setup iphonemodem2 to work under Fedora 10: Download iPhoneModem2 from a jailbroken iphone using Cydia. Create a new wireless network on Fedora with the following settings:
a) SSID = "iPhoneModem"
b) Mode = Ad-hoc
c) IPv4 Method = Automatic (DHCP)
Connect laptop and iphone to new wireless network. Start iphonemodem app on iphone. The "traffic" does not update; the "status" says "Wrong Wifi Network"; and the signal strength says 0%. However, the network connection should be there as long as you have a data signal to your service provider.

And can not get my network setup correctly to allow people to connect externally from my LAN. I have forwarded every relevant port I could find to the computer hosting TS, I forwarded them first as their respective protocols, and then as the combined UDP/TCP. I tried Forwarding single port numbers, and then port ranges.I have also tried uninstalling selinux.I have tried connecting directly to my cable modem with the server.I had this working perfectly three months ago with all the same software, using the same guide I listed above.The only thing I can imagine has changed is my operating system itself with system updates.
My network looks like:
Comcast cable modem--->Netgear WNR3500L Router----->Ubuntu 10.04 x86 desktop edition
what else I could possibly check? I can connect to and manage the TS server fine using localhost:9987 or 192.168.1.x:9987, it just wont allow any connections from outside the network.

Oct 23, 2010My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server

Apr 3, 2010I'm trying to setup OpenVPN in order to connect back to my home network while traveling for secure browsing and such. However, before I can even start trying to set that up I tried to see if I could open port check my computer through the net. And I'm having a hard time doing that.
As far as I can tell, here are my roadblocks:
1. Is ISP (Qwest) blocking my ports?
2. Is my modem doing the proper port forwarding and firewall?
3. Is my router doing the same?
4. Is my firewall on the computer allowing the request?
To minimize sources of error, I've turned off my local and router firewall and setup my router to forward ports. I'm not to familiar with my modem, but I'm pretty sure that the firewall is turned off by default and I think I've done port-forwarding correctly. But still no success when doing an open port check. At this point I don't know how to diagnose the problem.
