Ubuntu Servers :: Get A Samba Server Up And Running To Share With Windows Machines?

Oct 14, 2010

i manged to get a samba server up and running to share with my windows machines. But i still want more. My main goal is to be able to share my movies. I have a laptop hooked to my flat screen with 3TB's of external drives, thats whats acting as my server. I have ubuntu desktop installed because i use it to play movies also.

I'm looking to set up something that is a little faster than samba (yes i no trying to share through USB 2.0 external drives and a wifi connection isn't going to be real fast no matter what) but i want to be able to access my server remotely. like maybe FTP? but what i'm asking here is what protocol should i use and what programs? i was thinking gadmin-proftpd and then filezilla to access?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mounting A Samba Share On Two Machines - Can't Place Anything Into The Folder

Apr 24, 2011

I'm having some trouble mounting a Samba share on my two Ubuntu machines. The Samba share is setup so that all files are readable and writable by everyone (it's only accessible via the local network). When I create a new folder on the share with either of my Ubuntu machines, the folder becomes non-writable by anyone ie. I can't place anything into the folder. I'm using the following command to mount the share:

[Code].....

I think the problem is with the way I'm mounting the share on my Ubuntu machines. If I go to the share using smb://192.168.1.160 in a file browser, I can create new folders which are readable and writable by everyone. But, if I create the new folder where it's mounted at /mnt/backup, no-one can modify or change it.

Ubuntu :: VirtualBox 3.18, XP Guest, No Printers?

May 11, 2010

I'm using the newest VB 3.18 Lucid AMD64 .deb downloaded from Sun. Previous versions have not had USB support in Lucid. Now, when I start the XP guest, all my USB devices seem to be detected. My USB phone is shown as 'busy' as is my mouse. However, both my printers remain greyed out and are shown as being 'unavailable'. I have tried manually adding the printer filters before starting the guest, but no dice. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas as to a possible cause?

run a Hamachi client in a Windows virtualbox and be able to set it up (using network bridging, maybe?) like Hamachi was running in the host itself.

I'm most definitely not a networking expert, but I thought it would be worth a try to see if anyone had any ideas. Hamachi for linux is outdated and unstable.

Also, if this isn't possible and anyone has another cross-platform zero-config VPN solution as stable as Hamachi

Ubuntu :: Booting Virtualbox Machines Under VNC Failed?

Jul 6, 2011

I have ubuntu 11.04 with virtualbox installed. I have some old vmware virtual machines on an NTFS partition that I am able to successfully boot with virtualbox at my ubuntu desktop however, when I vnc into my desktop from a remote location and start up virtualbox and try to boot my virutal machines, I get:

Quote:

Failed to open a session for virtual machine.. the virtual machine has terminated unexpectedly during startup with exit code 0.

result code NS_ERROR_FAILURE 0x80004005

interface: IMACHINE

from googling this some people have indicated this means my username is not in the virtualbox user group, but I am logging in with the same username over vnc as I do when sitting at the machine where virtualbox works fine. the directory the machines are on is mounted, not sure why I can't boot them what else could be causing my problem? has anyone ever setup vnc4server on ubuntu and got virtualbox working?

Fedora :: Slow Printing Through Networked Printers Running FC11

Dec 23, 2009

I have recently replaced an older server with a new Intel Xeon quad-core processor. The old machine was running FC6, the new machine is running FC11 64Bit. The problem that I am having is that printing to networked printers prints 2-3 pages, then waits 8-10 seconds and then prints 2-3 more pages. This repeats until the printout is completed. My first thought is that FC11 (or somewhere between FC6 and FC11) introduced some way to limit activity to devices? The confusing thing to me is that I went from a single CPU to a quad core machine, increased the memory from 1Gb to 3Gb, moved from a 32 bit machine to a 64 bit machine and I am running the same applications... they just run slower now...

Ubuntu :: Share A Printer Between 2 Machines?

Jan 7, 2011

Two machines, each running Ubuntu 10.10. Desktop is wired to the router, and laptop is wireless. Printer is an HP Photosmart C4400 All in One series, and is connected to the desktop via USB.Prints OK from desktop. I have CUPS set up on both machines, and the laptop can see the printer. Desktop firewall allows CUPS in on port 631. Printer properties are set to enabled and shared Desktop is set to publish printers, and laptop is set to show printers from other systems. Fine until I try to print from laptop, when print job is shown as sent, but printer remains idle. Another thing is that on the laptop, the "enabled" setting drops off. I think this must be a configuration issue, but cannot find an answer anywhere. File sharing using Nautilus works fine.

Ubuntu Networking :: Multipul Pc's At House Being VNC Servers?

Jan 9, 2010

im having some problems trying to have multipul pc's at my house being VNC servers. I have one thats running ubuntu 8.10 and it has its own ip and its own port of 5900, the usual vnc port number. That is my server. Then i have my main pc that has its own ip as well and its own port number of 5901. After some research i found that the port numbers start at 5900 and go up by one for vnc. So my main issue is how do i tell my vnc client to look at a port other than the standard 5900?

Iv been googling trying to figure out how to configure vnc to look to a different port.

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN - Can Connect In One Part Of The House But Not Another

Feb 1, 2011

I'm trying to connect to Ipredator. If I plug my laptop into the wired network in one part of my house, I am able to connect to the VPN. If I connect to the wifi in another part of the house, network manager fails to connect to Ipredator. I have a wall-plugged wireless range extender, Netgear WGX102, connected to the wired network in the part of the house where Ipredator works, and it is providing the wireless access point in the part of the house where Ipredator does not work.

I checked the Netgear website and they don't seem to have any newer firmware for it. I've tried everything I can think of in terms of changing settings in the wireless range extender. Am I doing something wrong, and if so, what? If the problem is with the wireless range extender, then what can I get to replace it?

Ubuntu :: Autodetection Of Network Printers Makes All Printers Disappear?

Jan 28, 2010

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.

However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.

Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

General :: Multiple Machines: Share Data Using NFS / HTTP / FTP?

Apr 4, 2011

I have a network of 20 machines, all running Ubuntu 10.04.

Each machine has about 200[GB] of data that I'd like to share with all other 19 machines for READ ONLY PURPOSES. The reading should be done at the FASTEST POSSIBLE WAY.

A friend told me to look into setting up HTTP / FTP. Is it indeed the optimal way to share data between the machines (better than NFS)? if so, how do I go about it?

UPDATE: Just to clarify, all I want is to be able (from within machine X) to access one of machine Ys files and LOAD IT INTO MEMORY. all of the files are of uniform size (500 [KB]). Which method is fastest (SAMBA / NFS / HTTP / FTP)?

Ubuntu :: Printers Do Not Save In 'Shared Printers' Group?

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

First couple times i tried i typed in

After about 15 seconds it would pop back with

Code:

I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:

But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.

General :: Running SSH On Two Separate Machines?

Mar 1, 2011

I have the following network setup.

* A static IP from my ISP
* A router/modem in my home
* Two machines: MachineA and MachineB connected to the router

Currently, the router is setup so that ports 80, 21, and 22 all forward to ports 80, 21, and 22 on Machine A.

However, I would like to be able to SSH into Machine B as well. What is the best way to accomplish this? I figured I would setup Machine B's SSH server to listed on a random port like 2995. So then I would configure my router so that incoming requests from port 2995 are forwarded to port 2995 on Machine B.
