I have an old clunker box with no HD insalled in it. it does have a cd rom however, and i would be able to run DSL from it with that alone.
i want to set this box up as a print server, since as it is all of the computers in the house must actually be moved to the printer and connected to it via USB to print.
i am looking to simplify this for everyones benefit, here.
the box i am going to use will *not* be connected to a monitor, KB or mouse once it is ready to be left on its own. i will use these to set it up, but after that, id prefer a way to http: into it or FTP into it.
i am on ubuntu, the rest of the house is on XP. i figure i will have to configure the computer with SAMBA in order to set it up for sharing, is that correct?
i will be connecting the computer to the wireless router.
basically, id just like help with a roadmap on what needs to be done to set this up. i dont need step by step directions on everything, just an idea of where to start. id really like to get this setup within a few hours.
**Edit: path for mount was incorrect Distro Server: CentOS 5.5
Clients: Fedora(latest) OSX(latest)
Backround I am attempting to setup a server in my house mostly(for the first time) for backups and file sharing. It is important to me that file permissions are preserved. So its my understanding that I must use idmapd in order for this to work. As of now I'm only working with the linux distros while osx will be dealt with once these two work together. portmapper is up and running, along with lockd on both machines. Firewalls are also down on both machines for now. The server side was all setup using the GUI interface with no extra options selected. Problem When attempting to "mount -t nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" I get an error operation not permitted with no error printing in /var/log/message. If I use "mount -t -o nolock nfs4 10.0.0.2/$sharedfolder /mnt" it mounts just fine. Ive checked both machines multiple times to make sure that lockd is up and running. In the idmapd.conf file I the domain as "localdomain" for both machines but I doubt that is right; like I stated above this is my first attempt at a server. I'm assuming the problem is a whole missing step that involves some kind of id mapping server I need to setup.
My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server
There are a number of USB devices that can make Skype work with an existing home phone network, but most I've seen require Windows to work. I already have an always on headless Linux server running Ubuntu Server 9.04 (no GUI installed), so does anyone know of software and hardware that'll work with my setup to enable one of the analog lines in my home to work with Skype?
Also it seems most of the USB to Phone adapters are being discontinued and Skype doesn't even list any on their site. Do you guys know if they're phasing these devices out?

I am using Canon Pixus MP800, an equivalent model to Canon PIXMA iP4200, on Ubuntu Karmic 9.10. Print color on the printer is too pale on all applications (such as web page printing on Firefox, and picture printing on the image viewer). I run Windows XP on the same computer with dual-boot, and the print color is perfect on Windows XP. So, this is not a printer hardware issue, but a Ubuntu system issue.
How can I setup the printer to let it work properly?
Fedora 15/Gnome3, latest updates as of 4pm EST 7/14/11.Trying to connect to a Canon inkjet printer, which is physically on a WindowsXP box via usb cable. Printer is made shared on the Windows machine. On the F15 machine, I can connect to all shared folders on the WinXP box via SMB.But trying to set up the printer connection from WinXP box to F15 is not working. I use Printing, then Network Printer, then enter the WinXP IP, then choose Find Network Printer. Note there's no CUPS or SMB printer choice - only AppSocket/JetDirect, IP, HTTPS/ and LPD. After a few minutes, I'm prompted to enter username and p/w for the WinXP machine, and the printer is located. Connection is verified.Connection is shown as Windows via SAMBA. I click OK and move to driver installation.
I'm trying to find good instructions to help me set up a print server with a usb printer on a Lenny box with no GUI. The printer is a Brother HL-2170W. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
We are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.
Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".
I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .
Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?
Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?
Also to add-on, while executing the ypinit command we faced the following error:
At this point, we have to construct a list of the hosts which will run NIS servers. localhost.localdomain is in the list of NIS server hosts. Please cont inue to add the names for the other hosts, one per line. When you are done with the list, type a <control D>. next host to add: localhost.localdomain next host to add:
I have a WD My Book Essential Edition hard drive that has 500GBs of storage that I want to use with ubuntu and my windows machines in my house. The drives are preformatted with NTFS. Does ubuntu natively support read/write of NTFS hard drives?
im having some problems trying to have multipul pc's at my house being VNC servers. I have one thats running ubuntu 8.10 and it has its own ip and its own port of 5900, the usual vnc port number. That is my server. Then i have my main pc that has its own ip as well and its own port number of 5901. After some research i found that the port numbers start at 5900 and go up by one for vnc. So my main issue is how do i tell my vnc client to look at a port other than the standard 5900?
Iv been googling trying to figure out how to configure vnc to look to a different port.
I'm trying to connect to Ipredator. If I plug my laptop into the wired network in one part of my house, I am able to connect to the VPN. If I connect to the wifi in another part of the house, network manager fails to connect to Ipredator. I have a wall-plugged wireless range extender, Netgear WGX102, connected to the wired network in the part of the house where Ipredator works, and it is providing the wireless access point in the part of the house where Ipredator does not work.
I checked the Netgear website and they don't seem to have any newer firmware for it. I've tried everything I can think of in terms of changing settings in the wireless range extender. Am I doing something wrong, and if so, what? If the problem is with the wireless range extender, then what can I get to replace it?
I want to setup a FAI server for which I was looking for the best method of mirroring the Debian Lenny. I want to setup a local mirror with the best method available for mirroring. If it is ftpsync, please provide me some best ways of doing it. I tried ftpsync mirroring but that was not getting properly working due to insufficient I want this mirror to be accessible in my FAI setup so that I can start the installation on multiple machines and start the updates and package installation to be done from the same local mirror.
I just installed Fedora 13 on my desktop but I can't get it to pick up the wireless network in the house. The desktop has a Linksys AE1000 that can feed off of the wireless router in another room when I boot up in Windows.
I would like to install a surveillance system from my barn to my house. I have used linux based distros for some time. Currently using ubuntu. Need four cameras. Wifi or wireless. Audio and video. Color and Infrared. Not sure if I want a PC or DVR interface. I am very interested in supporting hardware outfits that support open source (FOSS). The barn is located four hundred feet away from the house. No problem with line of sight. I'm getting too old to drag my behind up to the barn in the middle of the night when newborns arrive.
I'm new to setting up Linux Servers. I've setup a Ubuntu 10.10 Server along with CUPS and I'm using Webmin to talk to the server. I have a HP PSC 1315 Multifunction printer connected via usb to the server. Using the CUPS web interface I am able to get the server to detect the connected printer and it identified the HP PSC 1310 Series drivers.
When I printer a test page from the server's screen the print job goes through ok and the size was about 5k.
I then setup a samba share to allow my Windows 7 machine to share the printer. Windows 7 is able to pick up the shared printer correctly and I used the default HP 1310 Series drivers. When I tried to send a test page to the printer, that single page ended up being 3887kb and I also tried printing out a single paged word document which ended up being over 7MB.
Alright so i just wanted to try and get remote desktop connections running so i can access files on the other computers in my house. For my first try i went after my laptop. I'm using rdesktop.
First couple times i tried i typed in
Code:
After about 15 seconds it would pop back with
Code:
I realized that my laptop's firewall was blocking the packets, so i created a custom rule that allows all TCP packets on port 3389. So i fired up rdesktop again. Now it pops back with:
Code:
But instantaneously, not after 15 seconds (not sure if thats significant or not.) I checked my firewall's log and it allowed the tcp packets.
I'm trying to set up a cups print server on 10.10 server. When I run
Code: sudo apt-get install cupsys
i get this error
Code: E: Unable to locate package cupsys
I can find and install all kinds of other stuff and this is a fresh install.
Here's my /etc/apt/sources.list
Code: #deb cdrom:[Ubuntu-Server 10.10 _Maverick Meerkat_ - Release i386 (20101007)]/ maverick main restricted # See http://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.
i was getting impatient in finding a way to make some of my peripherial devices to work in linux but no luck, so i installed windows xp home in virtual box, gave it access to my usb devices and installed the drivers for the printers and scanner. but there is just one thing that i want to do now how do i get windows xp to share my printer in virtual box with other computers in the house
We're in the final process of building a home, and I had them setup a wiring box where all the coax and cat5 terminates into one closet, which will also house my server. Once we get moved in I'd also like to add speakers in each room to have house-wide music, and ideally I'd like the audio to also run into this box with the master input coming from the server as well.My thought was to setup the server with some basic desktop manager like Fluxbox and use that to drive audio throughout the house, whether it be Pandora, Sirius Radio, or whatever. Since the server will be headless I'll need it setup so we can remote into it from our laptops, but I wasn't sure if VNC or some other RDP variant would work. Ideally we'll need to access a unified desktop so traditional terminal services where each users gets their own desktop might not be ideal
Interesting problem: For the first time with Xubuntu 10.10 64bit, I am finding certain applications print corrupt. A varying amount of letters / numbers either get substituted/print a blank space/ print a box etc etc. This corruption seems to happen from a Pdf ( evince ) or Spreadheet ( Gnumeric ) Opening the same Pdf on another machine (ubuntu 10.10 32bit) prints perfectly. Opening the same .xls file on the original computer but using OOo Calc prints perfectly.
I guess I have ruled out any problems with the printer itself or the network JetDirect box. I have re-installed CUPS and evince and upgraded to the latest version of HPLIP but the problem appears unchanged.
I cannot print pdf files. I have tried using okular and xpdf. The documents display in the program, but print preview shows a blank page. The printer then sends out blank pages. I have tried printing on 2 different printers using usb cables. Using terminal to process the commands shows error:
My wife has a canon MP470 printer and running ubuntu 10.10. I am able to print black and white, but unable to print photos. I got it to work using another driver, but not the 'correct' one for this printer. I have searched a bit and don't see anything about ubuntu 10.10, just older versions. Or should I just network her to my printer....?
2 dot matrix printers2 zebra barcode printers1 epson laser printerto my print server via usb and they are recognized as /dev/usb/lp*but everytime the identifications are changing.the first connected printer goes as lp0 and the one after lp1... i want to fix every printer to a unique name or lp id. like
Just installed drivers for Lexmark pro200 - S500 series. However although it is recognised by the system and has a tick by its name, And tells me it is connected via usb file goes to print que but will not print. Also tells me it is Printing - localhost! is this correct?.
