Jul 3, 2011

Ubuntu :: Two Wireless Access Points - Pick Right Network?

Mar 1, 2010

I have two wireless access points in my home network. A Linksys upstairs and a Watchguard Firebox downstairs. The Firebox acts as the gateway for my network to the internet (well, the ISP's router anyway). I invariably use my Hardy Heron installed HP laptop downstairs, less than 10ft from the Firebox. The signal bar for the Firebox shows three bars, the linksys just one. So, why the heck does my Ubuntu insist on connecting to the Linksys everytime?! I can manually switch it afterward but still, it's annoying.

Ubuntu :: 64 Bit Won't Shutdown Or Pick Up Wireless?

Feb 27, 2010

I'm running an HP Pavillion ZV6000, AMD 64 Athlon.I think that I'm not getting wireless because it never really shuts down. I've tried shutting down from the term (what I was used to from Damn Small) and it drops the window manager and then freezes on the black screen . . . I then have to do a hard shutdown (holding the power button).I've tried making sure that I don't have a USB stick in . . . shutdown wireless moduals, still the same.I'm starting to forget my keyboard commands, being that I am having to use windows to get on-line . . . like now!

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Pick Up Home Wireless Signal?

Mar 15, 2010

For the past few months I've been using Ultimate Edition 2.3 on my laptop. Various problems I encountered convinced me to switch. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 today and after the install I can't pick up my wireless router on the list of available networks. I'm able to pick up every other one on my block, just not my own. My server and my roommates laptop can pick it up and are connected to it, the problem seems to be exclusive to this laptop with the fresh install on it.I tried the 'connect to hidden network' option and it doesn't connect, it just keeps asking for the psk

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Doesn't Pick Up One Of The Networks?

Apr 11, 2011

I just loaded 10.10 onto a stock hp pavalion zt3000 and everything is running fine except it won't detect my college's wifi network. It picks up everything else and runs without a hitch. (I'm actually on my work's wireless network atm) The network is not hidden and doesn't have any encryption. The wireless is on and has even detected other networks when it doesn't see the school's. I searched but couldn't find much on this specific problem but Im guessing/hoping its something simple here's the hardware: Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04)

here's ifconfig:

SUSE :: Can No Longer Pick Up Wireless Internet Signal

Mar 24, 2010

my laptop, an Acer Aspire 5050, recently broke horribly. However, after giving it to an IT teacher at my college, he fixed it, but now the operating system is OpenSuse 11.2 (It was Windows Vista Home Basic before). I have never used OpenSuse, or any Linux before, but everything seemed fine. However, I discovered that I can no longer pick up my wireless internet signal - why is this and what can I do to fix it?! Be aware I am not a computer man, and will not understand complicated technical language.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Pick Up Wireless Networks With Netgear WNR3500L

Jun 26, 2011

I recently purchased a WNR3500L wireless router and it works great with Windows. However, when I boot up Ubuntu 11.04, it cannot find other wireless networks in the area. Despite this, my internet connection speed to my computer remains unaffected...the only issue is that it cannot pick up other networks.

From searching on Google and on these forums, I've learned that most routers don't work "out of the box" with Ubuntu...NDISWrapper and additional drivers must be installed in order to make them work to their full potential. But alas, I am a super-newb...I don't know what to do from here on to get my Netgear WNR3500L router to pick up other wireless signals.

Server :: Making A Minor Server For An Mmorpg Game That Will Run In House Network Only?

Oct 23, 2010

My Computer options arent great, but i am going to be starting the process of switching all the computers in my house to linux, i wanted to see if i could make a server to connect all of them for file sharing, but mostly for world of warcraft in the house.it would only be 10 computers accessing it at once. i would basically want to know what the best form of linux would be, the programs id need to have, if it could be done on a desktop based machine, or if id have to use my server. if i would need different hardware or if the linksys hardwired router going to be enough connection. i guess the filesharing would be more the pressing need, especially if it is possible to create a server and convert the connected computers to linux through use of the server

The idea is to make the 500's one RAID 1 set and the 2Tb a RAID 1 set. I think the installer is trying to build the RAID set for the OS but the root is looking like a RAID 0 rather than 1. Is there some way to specify?

Fedora :: Fedora 15: Remove Wireless Network From - List Of Preferred Networks

Jun 21, 2011

I accidentally clicked on a wireless network once and now every time I boot up, it tries to connect to that network and asks for the password. I have to keep pressing cancel and then it connects to my regular network.

I tried fiddling around with the network settings but I couldn't see any place where I could remove that network from the 'List of preferred networks' or at least try to prevent it from connecting automatically.

How to remove this network from the list of preferred networks? Edit some file somewhere maybe?

Ubuntu Networking :: Multipul Pc's At House Being VNC Servers?

Jan 9, 2010

im having some problems trying to have multipul pc's at my house being VNC servers. I have one thats running ubuntu 8.10 and it has its own ip and its own port of 5900, the usual vnc port number. That is my server. Then i have my main pc that has its own ip as well and its own port number of 5901. After some research i found that the port numbers start at 5900 and go up by one for vnc. So my main issue is how do i tell my vnc client to look at a port other than the standard 5900?

Iv been googling trying to figure out how to configure vnc to look to a different port.

Ubuntu :: Setup A Print Server In House?

Jan 14, 2010

I have an old clunker box with no HD insalled in it. it does have a cd rom however, and i would be able to run DSL from it with that alone.

i want to set this box up as a print server, since as it is all of the computers in the house must actually be moved to the printer and connected to it via USB to print.

i am looking to simplify this for everyones benefit, here.

the box i am going to use will *not* be connected to a monitor, KB or mouse once it is ready to be left on its own. i will use these to set it up, but after that, id prefer a way to http: into it or FTP into it.

i am on ubuntu, the rest of the house is on XP. i figure i will have to configure the computer with SAMBA in order to set it up for sharing, is that correct?

i will be connecting the computer to the wireless router.

basically, id just like help with a roadmap on what needs to be done to set this up. i dont need step by step directions on everything, just an idea of where to start. id really like to get this setup within a few hours.

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN - Can Connect In One Part Of The House But Not Another

Feb 1, 2011

I'm trying to connect to Ipredator. If I plug my laptop into the wired network in one part of my house, I am able to connect to the VPN. If I connect to the wifi in another part of the house, network manager fails to connect to Ipredator. I have a wall-plugged wireless range extender, Netgear WGX102, connected to the wired network in the part of the house where Ipredator works, and it is providing the wireless access point in the part of the house where Ipredator does not work.

I checked the Netgear website and they don't seem to have any newer firmware for it. I've tried everything I can think of in terms of changing settings in the wireless range extender. Am I doing something wrong, and if so, what? If the problem is with the wireless range extender, then what can I get to replace it?

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Network Has Disappeared (F10)

May 26, 2009

After a few years of being a fedora user on a large network, I final decided to bite the bullet and dual-boot my home desktop (solely XP at the time) with fedora 10 on Saturday. The installation seemed to go well, but I am having a few problems, which solved themselves at one point but have come back and I have no idea why.

- I installed and re-partitioned with the install DVD, giving fedora 20GB. Having read a few guides and forum posts I wasn't surprised when the wifi and ATI graphics card didn't work. They appeared in the output of lspci, but I couldn't change the screen resolution and no wireless card was available.
- I bought a new wireless card a while ago but hadn't had time to put in so used this opportunity to do so (installed it in XP to check it worked) and when I rebooted, guess what, the resolution was what I wanted and I could see all the networks in the neighbourhood. I connected, downloaded/installed the myriad of updates together with a couple of programes through yum and went to bed a happy man.
- This morning (my router needed rebooting and after) I was back to the same as before the new wireless card, i.e. low resolution and no wifi. Having no idea what had happened, I check for loose connections, after that the resolution returned and the wifi worked but I can't see my home network.

I have a mainly windows house with a notebook running Fedora 11. The problem is that when this computer is on the wireless network it shows no computers on the network. It gives me the error that it can't retrieve the shared list from server. However when I am using it on the wired part of the same network it will see all of the other computers. I was wondering if anyone here could shed light on what might be going on. I am not sure if it is a setting on the computer or something to do with the router. However I don't think it has anything to do with the router because I have windows laptops that run on the same wireless access point and have no problem

Fedora Networking :: Can't Connect To Wireless Network

Sep 11, 2010

I picked up a cheap PC the other day for 20 and it came with a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter. I know the adapter works because Windows XP was originally installed and I could connect with no problems. I wasn't able to connect when I installed Kubuntu so I thought I'd see if I could have any more luck with Fedora....so far, not so good! I realise that this is a fairly common problem, especially for this USB adapter, but I've tried dozens of threads here and elsewhere and still can't get Fedora online.I can see the wireless networks in the list, but if I try and connect then I just repeatedly get asked to enter the authentication details, which I know I'm providing correctly.
