Ubuntu :: Setup A Non-local Virtual Desktop?

Feb 14, 2011

I've never even set up a virtual desktop on Windows so I'm not sure where to start. I noticed that there's a menu in Ubuntu to set this up, but I followed the instructions (can't remember what they were off hand) and it said that the computer was only accessible through a LAN. I want to leave the Ubuntu machine (my laptop) at home and be able to access it through my desktop (Win7) in college (long story but I don't think that matters). It's possible to do this, right? How would it be done? I understand that LogMeIn doesn't work with Linux, so I'm guessing I have to use Ubuntu's default virtual desktop program and a Windows program like TightVNC, but I'm not sure how to make the laptop accessible from something other than a local network.

General :: Setup Own Local Area Network Using Virtual Box Machines

I am new to networking and trying to setup my own local area network using virtual box machines. I have installed BIND 9.7.3 using yum in Fedora (dns server) and created all necessary .conf and zone fil es. I am successfully able to resolve domain names on this host machine (dns server). for example dig @dns.domain.lan client1.domain.lan correctly resolves domain name.

Networking :: PPTP Setup: Put Remote Clients Into A "virtual" Local Network?

Feb 7, 2009

I have a Slicehost VPS and I'm trying to set up PPTPD on it. I only have one IP address (the public IP of the box). All the PPTPD howto's I've seen rely on assigning remote clients IPs from the local subnet (e.g. the PPTD server's local IP is 192.168.0.20, and remote IPs are taken from a pool of 192.168.0.30-40).

However I don't think I can do that as I only have the one IP address on Slicehost's network - that public IP (and all other IPs in the segment are public). So what I really want to do is to be able to create a private LAN segment or virtual network adapter and have VPN clients assigned addresses in that segment, then routed out onto the Internet effectively using the PPTPD box as a router. I am using Ubuntu Hardy (LTS).

Networking :: Outgoing Local Trafic Over Virtual Interface Has Not Virtual Ip Address

Aug 25, 2009

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.

My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

Ubuntu Networking :: Remote Desktop Access "Your Desktop Is Only Reachable Over The Local Network. Others Can Access Your Computer Using The Address 127.0.0.1 Or Tabatha.local"

Feb 19, 2010

Running Ubuntu 9.10. In the Remote Desktop config dialog I get: "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address 127.0.0.1 or tabatha.local." I understand this means only the loopback ip address is available. All my other machines show their true local ip address (e.g., 192.168.1.104) in this dialog. Thus I cannot log on to this desktop from other machines.

When I try to do a remote logon from another Ubuntu 9.10 box (or from an XP box using a VNC viewer), I get: "Connection to 192.168.1.102 has been closed." What steps are needed to make this machine show its actual ip address? All file sharing between the various machines is working properly and all windows shares back and forth between XP and 'nix, and among the the vaious XP boxes and linux boxes are available as designed.

General :: KDE Stop Virtual Desktop Changing When Click On The Desktop?

Sep 18, 2011

I'm new to KDE and am running KDE 4.7.1 on top of Arch Linux. It's fantastic however I have one problem - virtual desktops. Yeah I know there are those "activities" things which people say replace virtual desktops and I will look into them, but for the moment I want to stick with what I know.

And it's almost set up too. In fact, it is, apart from one issue: Say I'm on desktop 3 and I click on the desktop (as in - the bit with my wallpaper, etc, not the little square in my panel) - it immediately switches to desktop 1. Got no idea why I'd want it to do that and it's bugging me.

OpenSUSE :: Export Remote X To Local Dedicated Virtual Terminal (VT)

Apr 20, 2011

I have a "remote" server and I want to have it's X exported to my "local" laptop. Preferably, it gets done automatically from boot. I know that virtual terminals 1-6 are all text terminals and 7 is the local X. How can I get my laptop to automatically create a virtual terminal on 12 that's dedicated to receiving the X display from the server?

I know how to get it over SSH/putty. And also how to stop the local and restart the X client on 7 to use the remote. But one of the beauties of Linux is the automation and multi-user environment. It's essentially going to act as a KVM with gui replacement over IP.

I tried connecting with irssi on localhost port 6667 but it says "Connection refused on port 6667".
The #ubuntu channel told me I have to configure my firewall for that.

I can ssh to localhost with no problem on port 22 but not on 6667 which lets me think the port is blocked.

Ubuntu :: Setup A Local Web Server To Test PHP Pages?

Aug 11, 2010

I have downloaded the Apache web server so I can set up a local web server to test my PHP pages. The download automatically went into the default "Downloads" folder instead of the /opt folder where the Apache instructions said to download the file to. I have tried to move the file from the Downloads folder to the /opt folder but am denied access - says I don't have enough privileges (or some such thing?). Bummer.

So I tried to use the terminal to install the file that I downloaded from Apache (following their instructions - actually copied/pasted the command line so there would be no typo problem) - no joy.

The first thing I was instructed to do was to enter the su command, which I did, and was asked for a password. I have tried every password I have ever used on this system and I receive the following:

su: Authentication failure

and it returns me to the prompt. What is my password?

I checked the archives for similar problems and came up with zero relevant hits.

Ubuntu Servers :: Setup A DNS Server On Local Network?

Jun 14, 2011

I am trying to setup a DNS server on my local network. When I set linux clients to use it, it works as expected. However, when I set windows clients to it, the root name doesn't resolve. For example, I have a zone called daniel. On linux "anything.daniel" resolves to the correct ip as does "daniel" which is the behavior I want. However, on windows 7, "anything.daniel" resolves correctly, but "daniel" doesn't. I am new to BIND9 so my config is mostly copy and pasted. Here is my zone file for daniel (where #.#.#.# is the ip I want daniel to resolve to):

@ IN SOA ns1.daniel. admin.daniel. (
2007031001
28800
3600

The only problem is that I don't know where to get started. Both of the computers I'm currently using are Windows and the one that I,hopefully, can turn into a server is running on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Setup For Hostname Access On Local Network

I would like to have it so they can access by the name of my computer though. I have no local DNS server so I guess I need to hard code the relationship in each machine? Ideally I'd actually like to be able to use subdomains (which I use locally to avoid annoying .htaccess path problems). i.e. from another machine on the network to go to [URL].

Server :: Apache Virtual Host Setup

Oct 29, 2009

I have 4 domains registered through godaddy. I have a dell poweredge box with one static IP hosted somewhere. I want the 4 domain to resolve to four different sites. I have already created 4 different sites in apache with four different aliases and has enabled it.

eg
alias /a /var/www/a
alias /b /var/www/b
alias /c /var/www/c

I want to acomplish.

www.a.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/a
www.b.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/b
www.c.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/c

I tried with godaddys forward with masking option. It works but I can't hide xx.xx.xx.xx/a in the links. Whats the best approach? One limitation is I cannot use the webhosts name servers. How do I set this up with name based virtual hosting? Do I setup a DNS server in the box?

I do have a dns host name for my box which is publicy accessible. Some my.ca.examplehost.net
