I am trying to set up an IRC server on my local network.
The Ubuntu wiki tells me to install ircd-hybrid and then try to connect to my server with a chat client.
I tried connecting with irssi on localhost port 6667 but it says "Connection refused on port 6667".
The #ubuntu channel told me I have to configure my firewall for that.
I can ssh to localhost with no problem on port 22 but not on 6667 which lets me think the port is blocked.
I want to setup a FAI server for which I was looking for the best method of mirroring the Debian Lenny. I want to setup a local mirror with the best method available for mirroring. If it is ftpsync, please provide me some best ways of doing it. I tried ftpsync mirroring but that was not getting properly working due to insufficient I want this mirror to be accessible in my FAI setup so that I can start the installation on multiple machines and start the updates and package installation to be done from the same local mirror.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have downloaded the Apache web server so I can set up a local web server to test my PHP pages. The download automatically went into the default "Downloads" folder instead of the /opt folder where the Apache instructions said to download the file to. I have tried to move the file from the Downloads folder to the /opt folder but am denied access - says I don't have enough privileges (or some such thing?). Bummer.
So I tried to use the terminal to install the file that I downloaded from Apache (following their instructions - actually copied/pasted the command line so there would be no typo problem) - no joy.
The first thing I was instructed to do was to enter the su command, which I did, and was asked for a password. I have tried every password I have ever used on this system and I receive the following:
su: Authentication failure
and it returns me to the prompt. What is my password?
I checked the archives for similar problems and came up with zero relevant hits.
I am trying to setup a DNS server on my local network. When I set linux clients to use it, it works as expected. However, when I set windows clients to it, the root name doesn't resolve. For example, I have a zone called daniel. On linux "anything.daniel" resolves to the correct ip as does "daniel" which is the behavior I want. However, on windows 7, "anything.daniel" resolves correctly, but "daniel" doesn't. I am new to BIND9 so my config is mostly copy and pasted. Here is my zone file for daniel (where #.#.#.# is the ip I want daniel to resolve to):

I'm trying to setup a NAS for my network, the only problem is that I can't figure out how to do it. On my network I have about 3 computers however only I only use 2 of them so I thought that maybe I could use the third computer in such a way that I could access it 24/7 from the internet as a server for all of my files (school papers, music etc etc...). The only problem is that I don't know where to get started. Both of the computers I'm currently using are Windows and the one that I,hopefully, can turn into a server is running on Ubuntu.

I'm trying to pass multiple dpmains thru one ubuntu server to various hosts on my local network.
[url] should be sent to the /var/www folder on the local host.
[url] should be forwarded to an IIS box on my local network (owa.nunya.local)
[url] should be sent to another ubunto box on my local network (smtp.biznet.net)
I have tried placing VirtualHost entries in /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and [url]and [url] both work but [url] gets forwarded to the c:inetpub folder on the IIS box.
I am starting to develop websites in Ubuntu. I have set up apache server, php, mysql, and phpmyadmin. I have also set up a local domain for the site. Everything works great with html files, but how do I get Firefox to open .php files instead of trying to save them.

I noticed that there's a menu in Ubuntu to set this up, but I followed the instructions (can't remember what they were off hand) and it said that the computer was only accessible through a LAN. I want to leave the Ubuntu machine (my laptop) at home and be able to access it through my desktop (Win7) in college (long story but I don't think that matters). It's possible to do this, right? How would it be done? I understand that LogMeIn doesn't work with Linux, so I'm guessing I have to use Ubuntu's default virtual desktop program and a Windows program like TightVNC, but I'm not sure how to make the laptop accessible from something other than a local network.

On my machine I have Apache setup for web development and other machines can "see" it using my IP address. I would like to have it so they can access by the name of my computer though. I have no local DNS server so I guess I need to hard code the relationship in each machine? Ideally I'd actually like to be able to use subdomains (which I use locally to avoid annoying .htaccess path problems). i.e. from another machine on the network to go to [URL].

We are trying to set up a NIS server on a CentOS system. We need to have a NIS server which can provide NIS authentication to a couple of clients. We are practically new to all this stuff.
Just googled to find some ideas about installing ypserv and ypbind and portmapper. We did all that and also started them successfully. But now the clients are not able to join to the NIS domain . The error log states "YP_DOMAIN NOT BOUND".
I guess we have not entered the /etc/yp.conf, /etc/hosts files properly. Please let us know the detailed steps to setup a NIS server .
Also, please let us know what entries should go into the different /etc/<file_names>? What is meant by HOSTNAME in the /etc/hosts file?
Is there any other files which need to be changed? Are we missing any steps?

It is not difficult to set up a regular local repository (rpms) and manage a fedora system with it using yum. I wonder if the process is same for deltaRPMS. Has anyone successfully set up a local deltaRPM repo or is this something reserved for online repos? How does one achieve this?

I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter:
rsync -vrtW account@remote.com:~/public_html
I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a machine running Ubuntu Server that is on several VLANs. Each VLAN has its own subnet and the server has an address on each subnet. The switches are set to allow tagged traffic to the server for each VLAN that it is on. Switch ports ending with workstations are given untagged ports on whatever VLAN is appropriate. Workstations are given addresses on a subnet for each VLAN via DHCP. All this works great and hosts on any subnet/VLAN can access the server as normal via its address on that subnet/VLAN.
Accessing the machine by its address on a non-local subnet is where I run into a problem. Inter-subnet traffic has to go through a router, which has been set up appropriately. Running tcpdump on the server and pinging it from a workstation on a subnet, using its address on a different subnet, shows the server receives the ping, but sends no response:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've tried /etc/init.d/mysql start, and it actually starts, or at least, it doesn't error out. But when I do pgrep mysql I get nothing, and when I try to login with mysql -p as root, I get
ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)
None of my other logins work, either, but since pgrep mysql didn't work, it's clear that MySQL just isn't running. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling mysql-server via apt-get, but I get the same thing. The logs in /var/log/syslog show this:

The issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but,only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.
My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup.My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.

I am now trying to setup a VSFTP server where local users can upload files to there home directory so that Apache can serve web pages straight from the directories of system user home/accounts giving users the ability to run their own web sites which are hosted off the main server [tutorial here: [url]
So far i have been able to serve/display index.html files from the users home directory [url] but so far i cant upload files to any user home directory, every time i try to upload a file with filezilla i get this error message: 553 Could not create file. Critical file transfer error
I have searched online for similar problems like mine and so far i've tried alot of the solution but none seem to work. I'm confused, dont know where i went wrong, i put the users in a group called ftpusers and here are the permissions on the users (test, ftpuser & testftp) home directory. have a look an tell me where i went wrong :(
