Ubuntu Servers :: Setup Virtual Web Server On Laptop?

Sep 20, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 server as a guest on a Windows 7 host using VirtualBox. I've set the VirtualBox configuration to use a Bridged network connection so that I can access the internet through the Ubuntu guest and to access the Ubuntu apache server through my Windows host. This is all running on my laptop which connects to various routers using dhcp (some ip addresses start with 198. while others start with 10.) What I need is a single static ip address (or hostname/url) to setup my cms (drupal).how I can accomplish this given the varying routers the laptop connects to?

Debian Configuration :: Multiple Virtual Servers Be Setup In 2 Desktops?

Jun 12, 2010

I now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.

Questions:

1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.

2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?

Ubuntu :: Old 48MB RAM Laptop - Connect To A Virtual PC On A Server

Mar 20, 2011

I have this old Toshiba Tecra 730CDT laptop, pretty useless with it's 150MHz Pentium processor and 48MB RAM. I am considering to throw it out for good. But, before I do it, I wanted to hear maybe it is still possible to use it:

1) perhaps there is some really thin linux distro that would let me to connect to a virtual PC on a server, transmit the mouse and keyboard events, and get the image and sound streamed back.

2) Maybe there is some other smart use of such gear, like installing it in car or something. I doubt it though, because it's heavy (8lbs~3.6Kg), bulky and energy-inefficient. But still... it's so hard to accept that such smart pile of electronic must go to the junk yard.

Server :: Apache Virtual Host Setup

Oct 29, 2009

I have 4 domains registered through godaddy. I have a dell poweredge box with one static IP hosted somewhere. I want the 4 domain to resolve to four different sites. I have already created 4 different sites in apache with four different aliases and has enabled it.

eg
alias /a /var/www/a
alias /b /var/www/b
alias /c /var/www/c

I want to acomplish.

www.a.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/a
www.b.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/b
www.c.com ==> xx.xx.xx.xx/c

I tried with godaddys forward with masking option. It works but I can't hide xx.xx.xx.xx/a in the links. Whats the best approach? One limitation is I cannot use the webhosts name servers. How do I set this up with name based virtual hosting? Do I setup a DNS server in the box?

I do have a dns host name for my box which is publicy accessible. Some my.ca.examplehost.net

SSLRequire %{SSL_CLIENT_S_DN_O} eq "something"
SSLVerifyClient require
SSLVerifyDepth 2
</VirtualHost>

But when I try to check for syntax errors tells me SSLRequire not allowed here I do not want to add SSLRequire on the main httpd.conf because I only want it for one virtual host. The rest of the virtual hosts do not need it.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Setup And Configure A Server Entirely With Text Only Run Mode 3 On A Virtual Machine

Feb 24, 2011

I'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:

-clear all rules
#iptables -F
-set default policy rules
#iptables --policy INPUT DROP
#iptables --policy FORWARD DROP

[Code]....

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:

#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT

so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.

General :: What Is The Best MTA Setup For A Home / Laptop Computer (not Server)?

Sep 21, 2010

What is a good MTA (e.g. Postfix or something else) setup for a home computer behind a NAT, or a laptop that is not always online? I've read a lot of Postfix tutorials on how to set it up this way or that, but they are usually geared towards computers that are servers ie they

have a static IP
have a domain name
are always connected to the same network

My requirements are, I guess: Ability to redirect mail for local users to another server of my choosing. No listening for incoming SMTP connections - outgoing only Ability to route outgoing mail via an external SMTP server with authentication (and perhaps encryption) If not Postfix, I need an MTA which can queue up mails in case it temporarily has no internet connection.

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Server Virtual Terminal / Display Not Working

May 4, 2010

Clean install of 10.04 Server 32 bit.Only services OpenSSH Server and Print Server.Machine boots and can be accessed through ssh.Virtual terminals (cntl-alt-1,2,3,4,... do not result in video to the monitor (no sync) or a display. If I type blind, I can log in, ssh back to my other machine, and create a file. So the virtual terminal is there and listening to the keyboard and running, just not creating a display.

This machine has been working fine with 08.10 for quite time up until yesterday, so I don't believe it is a hardware problem.Any ideas why the video on the virtual terminals would not work?

I am completely new to everything linux, however I decided that it was time to do something with an old pc I had and I was thinking of setting it up as a home server. I look around for an easy guide on how to set up the server from the begining but I can't seem to find one that's good for a complete beginner like me.What I would like to do is to had the server as a place where I keep all my movies, music etc and be able to acces it from my home network and also from outside of it. Also, I would like to connect my two printers to this server and share them on the network.

Is there a place where I can find simple information about what I want to do and is it possible for a complete beginner like me to do what I want to do?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Setup A TFTP Server

Nov 12, 2010

I am trying to setup a TFTP server and followed these instructions in setting up TFTP-HPA.

[URL]

I pretty much followed every step but commented out these two lines from the /etc/xinet.d/tftp.

# only_from = 172.31.0.240/28
# interface = 172.31.0.252

Do we really need the lines if I am allowing any machine to connect? And I have only 1 network card. This is acting as a dedicated TFTP server.I ask as I get an error on the get and put commands as below:

tftp> get xxx.txt
tftp: error received from server <File not found>
tftp: aborting

However although it gives an error it DOES GET the file. The put command however does NOT put the file. I have nobody / nogroup setup for the directory permissions as well.

tftp> put .vimrc
tftp: error received from server <File not found>
tftp: aborting

Ubuntu Servers :: Virtual Machines On A Home Server - XBMC Outputs Through An HDMI Cable To The TV

Jan 30, 2011

I have a home server that I have been running for some years and am constantly tweaking / playing with it resulting in numerous reinstalls (and upsetting the wife!). It does nothing critical but I use it mainly for:

backing up my laptop files
XBMC
ZoneMinder

Due to the number of times that I manage to break it, I have now thought about setting it up as a base system but with virtual machines looking after the seperate 'components'. The machine is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ with 2Gb RAM. First of all do you think it is powerful enough to run XBMC and ZM in seperate virtual machines? - I appreciate the more RAM the better but at the moment I am sticking to 2Gb.

I was also wondering what sort of issues may arise for the audio and video areas I will be using. XBMC currently outputs through an HDMI cable to the TV and ZM recieves video signals through a seperate video card. ( I have had my concerns in the past that there have been conflicts in the way I have set things up!). I have read a number of guides about setting a system up with virtual machines but not really found any articles about the practicalities of using such a set up at home. before I commit and spend a week pulling my hair out trying to get it all to work!
