Ubuntu :: Remote Lock Will Not Work On Multi-vid Card Studio Box?

I'm trying to set up some scripts from one machine that I can use to remotely lock all of my workstations remotely. I have a virtual ubuntu machine ported out to the internet w/ ssh open and I'm using ServerAssistant on my droidX phone to kick off the scripts. I have all of my ssh keys shared between the boxes so I don't have to log on. Everything works beautifully for one machine, a regular Ubuntu 10.10 box with a single video card with 2 monitors. ssh -X brainstem@zappa "export DISPLAY=:0; gnome-screensaver; gnome-screensaver-command -l" But my other desktop, a triple monitor ubuntu studio 10.04 box (2 vid cards) will not kick off with the same syntax as above (obviously different computer name). If I execute the command manually from the remote machine, it doesn't work either. Just to make sure, I ran "gnome-screensaver-command -l" locally on this box just to make sure that part works - it locks the machine locally just fine. I just can't seem to get it to work from another machine. I've tried from 2 different boxes and have the same results. I can do anything else I want over ssh and it all works.
I have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).
I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.
I have recently owned a Dell Studio 1555 with Windows 7 preinstalled. Incredibly, it does't have any leds on it that indicate things such as hdd activity or even caps lock! "Fortunately", Dell has provided me with an app "DellSet" that indicates on-screen when caps lock is on or off. I was wondering if there was any program that could do the same thing on linux so I can finally migrate to Ubuntu on my notebook.
I'm wondering if there's a way so that several people can log onto my computer at the same time. When they connect it goes to the login screen and they choose their account and log in. Everybody has a different account and sees a different desktop. Is that possible?
When i log in as root, and try to click the lock screen button, lock screen doesnt work? Is it disabled by default?is there anyway to lock screen when logged in as root
I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?
I am using ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31-9-rt) and an M-Audio Delta 1010 PCI sound card, and trying to get MIDI inputs and outputs to work on this sound card.I have Jack installed and working. MIDI signals from virtual keyboard or a MIDI player can be routed to fluidsynth, and fluidsynth's audio can be played back through the outputs of the delta 1010.I can use a MIDI sequencer (e.g. rosegarden or qtractor) to record MIDI from virtual keyboard, with jack handling the routing.
But, no matter how I configure the connections in jack, I can't get any signals from the "MIDI In" port on the sound card.Does anybody have some thoughts on how to fix this? Where is the disconnect between the delta 1010 and qtractor? I am concerned also that the "MIDI In" LED on the front panel of the Delta 1010 never blinks. There must be some basic ALSA configuration that needs to be done to activate and use these MIDI ports, or something. I've been trying to figure it out for days.
May I put a USB 54Mbps Wireless Network Card Adapter into Ubuntu Studio- 64 bit, does the 64 bit Ubuntu Studio (9.10) support this usb wireless network card adapter? how to let it work in Ubuntu Studio 9.10
Here, "enable_msi=1" was not initially included in sound.conf, I added. After adding I find that volume change buttons are working, but sound is not coming. Mixer channels are all set to active mode and vol is MAX to 100. Mixer channels show two tabs -- one showing HDA_Intel and the other showing HDA_ATI_HDMI. Mic Jack mode is Line_in.
I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
my network was a dream to set up under ubuntu 9.10. all i had to do was enter pass key, then that was it. Works brilliantly.
Different matter with studio. The thing I notice in network connections is, it doesn't want to retain my pass phrase, if I go back into properties the phrase is blank. As far as I can tell the wireless card has been reconcognized and is communicating with router.
My system is: asus p5ql-vm epu, intel core2 duo 2.8 e7400, 4gb 1067 ddr2 ram, belkin f5d7050 v4000, edimax router.

I'm a total NOOB and I just finished a dual boot Ubunutu Studio 9.10 64bit/Windows 7 x64 install on a brand new i7 PC using a WD10EARS hard drive (with the new Advanced Format) and I gave myself top marks for getting by the mammoth amount of obstacles to accomplish what I have so far.
Item of note: you can NOT do a complete install with Ubuntu Studio 9.10 using a wireless device. The installer ONLY recognizes motherboard ethernet ports. No worries, I moved it to the office and the LAN line and got a complete install. I am using this in my living room though as a Media PC with MythTV and the distance requires me to use WIRELESS.
After a successful install, I was unable to get my brand new, out of box Netgear WG111v3 to establish a successful connection and I need your help. Pardon the length of this post, I will try to organize it as best as I can but I have done a LOT of troubleshooting before posting here. Here's what I did so far:
1. Tested Wireless in Win7 on same PC. Works GREAT! Rebooted, went into Ubuntu Studio 9.10 and got no joy. 2. This page says the WG111v3 works out of box with Karmic and I can state with 100% certainty it does NOT. 3. Went to this page (which is THE best how to out there) and followed instructions. I discovered a bug in wpa_passphrase immediately. I use a very complex passphrase using !#$&@ characters in the mix. wpa_passphrase dies with various errors when it sees these characters because it thinks they're command items rather than part of the text in my key. Try it yourself. Create any long text string with those characters and input it to wpa_passphrase. It dies. Works fine with regular letters/numbers. I had to use this page to get the HEX value for my passphrase so I could complete my interfaces file. On a hunch, I changed my passphrase on the router to be a simple 10 letter word all in lower case. wpa_passphrase changed that to HEX fine, updated interfaces file, rebooted router and PC and got nothing. So it's NOT the passphrase. 4. Went to this page, which again states it works out of box but doesn't and tried all the help there. NO JOY. 5. Tried here too. The help there is good when combined with #2 above but still nothing. 6. Went to unsupported versions of Ubuntu to try some old school tricks. Got nothing. 7. Found this site and it has EXACTLY my problem! I always end up with "No working leases in persistent database - sleeping." when it tries to get an IP address from the router. As you can see, that user found no fix either. 8. I turned off ALL security on the router and left it wide open, updated my interfaces file appropriately, rebooted everything and it still couldn't connect?
I have a dual monitor setup with a nVidia 7300 card. I'm not sure exactly when this started to happen, but it's happened for a couple of years at least. when I'm in one or the other monitor the cursor will sometimes "stick" in that monitor and refuse to go to the other monitor. it'll just 'wrap around' as when I go to the right part of the monitor, it'll then jump to the left side, and vice versa. Also once in awhile, if I'm in one monitor, the cursor will be taken away and put on the other monitor. I'm just now starting to see a few patterns on what's happening. It's worse if I have VCL playing in the left monitor, (my secondary), and I've got a program maximized in the right (primary) monitor. That's when it'll 'stick' on the right monitor. After I roll up the program or minimize it, then it'll free the mouse. But it's not instant. After it's freed, it still doesn't work exactly. If you click on any program on the left monitor, then you have to move back and forth before the mouse will work on the left monitor.
The second problem I'm having happens only on the secondary monitor. At times the precision is WAY off. For example, if I try to put the mouse right on an icon, and click it. It won't work. But if I move the mouse over to the right or left, suddenly the pop-up comment box pops up, the icon is highlighted and clicking will run the program. It can be off as much as 100 pixels! I've seen these problems in all sorts of GUIs; XFCE, DXCE, KDE 3.x (I never tried it in KDE 4.x since it was nearly unusable) and Gnome. Right now I've only see this on Ubuntu 8.04.01, to 9.10 (I never went past 9.10), and at first I thought it was X since all GUIs had problems. But someone now says that nVidia's driver might be to blame. If you can tell me what command to type in at the terminal, I can supply the current video driver's version.
can one ethernet card support multiple ip address? but i think it's very dangerous. if bad guy take many ip, other people can't get ip. "does one ethernet card take multiple real ip or multiple virtual ip(one real ip)?" if it takes multiple real ip, then how it works good?..
I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.
I have a Dell Studio 1535 and can't seem to get recording from the mic jack to work. I was wondering if anyone has got it to work or not on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. I fiddled with the settings in System->Preferences->Sound and in Volume Control: HDA Intel (Alsa mixer), as well as the settings in the semi-CLI program alsamixer, but it doesn't matter what I do. I have failed to get it to record from the mic jack. It will only record from my internal mics, and I don't want that at all.
I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.
Number lock won't stay on or off. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. I'll be typing, and use the number keypad to move the cursor to the far left or right, and get a number instead. Or the opposite will happen.have tried ctrl-alt-numlock. I have tried installing numlockx. I have tried, in fact, every solution listed here that I can find. I had the same problem with 9.04, and found a terminal command (I think) that fixed it.But I didn't save the solution anywhere, and I can't find the post with that solution in the forums.
I want to buy a new external USB hard disk drive, and my eye was drawn by the 1TB CORE External Desktop USB 2.0 Very appealing was the comment "Plug n Play - no software to install". But then I noticed the sentence: "Includes DES lock - Protect all your important files." This set the alarm bells ringing. If the drive comes with a DES protection lock, is this likely to work with Ubuntu? Or is it going to be a Windows-only thing, locking me out cos I don't use Windows?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 Server. I can't get my Wireless Card & Wired Card to work at the same time. My interfaces file is incorrect, when I comment out 1 of the interfaces the other works. I have attached my interfaces file.
i created a second instance of postfix.It isn' t the first time that i made this procedure but with debian i had a lot of problem.I think that the problem is chroot configuration of postfix .In the first i had two problem smtp “fatal: unknown service: smtp/tcp” and the second instance was enable to make nslookup of domain.I copied the necessary file in /var/spool/postfix-second-instace and i solved the errors.Now the problem is that there aren't error in log file but connect to xxx.xxx.net[yyy.nn.yyy.yyy]:25: Connection timed out for all connection. and the email are all in defer directory and the second instance doesn' t send emails.
I'm about to order an Intuos4 Medium, but I just want to know how well it works in Ubuntu Studio 10.10? I know profiling works (with a script that I found on the forums) but what about tilt sensitivity and other more advanced options? Also, if people have had it under normal Ubuntu, or Kubuntu,

This works in virt-manager when I boot the physical usb device a virtual disk with a usb bus and it works flawlessly, but when I plug it into a physical machine the cdrom detects fails to mount /dev/sdb1 as fstype=iso9660.
