OpenSUSE Wireless :: Turn On Wifi On The Dell Studio 15?
Apr 10, 2010I just bought a new Dell Studio 1558 and I can't turn the wifi on when logging to my account, the wireless card is installed correctly but the button (F2) doesn't work to turn the wifi on.

On windows there is a program from dell that associate these keys (wifi -F2- and Eject optical drive) to their functions.
I wonder how can I achieve this under OpenSuse.

Aug 21, 2011I have a strange problem with my laptop and need your help in resolving it...i am using a Dell Studio XPS 1645..i have got everything working except the wireless.. and the real problem here is that the wlan detects the network but does not connect to it and will keep on looping back and forward doing the same thing again and again..I am using Opensuse 11.4 with Gnome 3 Shell..here is details of the commands that i tried using to fix the issue

Nov 9, 2010I have a Dell Latitude E6500 running Opensuse 11.3. As far as I can tell the module for my wireless card is loaded correctly and it's working:

The funny thing is that it works fine in a Fedora installation, which has an older kernel and older drivers, on the same laptop. The fact that the indicator light doesn't come in when the physical switch is turned on suggests it's something to do with that switch.

Jun 10, 2010I recently installed Ubuntu x64 on my dell studio 1535 using the windows installer (wubi).
All seems to be working fine apart from the built in wireless card, the proprietary driver (found in hardware drivers) installs and activates successfully and works perfectly. Until I shut down or restart the system. On the next boot the wireless card is 'disabled' and no longer works.
The card I have is a Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g
I am going to try a proper install on a second partition rather than using wubi later on but wondered if this was a commonly occuring problem?
The wireless card works as soon as the driver installs, however I am shown a "restart to activate driver" message and after restarting it's dead.

Dec 25, 2009My wireless device is an integrated Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, I am unsure about the driver I have in use. I am sure I have a driver installed because the configuration screen shows my network. I currently have the computer plugged into my network via CAT 5 but I would like to be able to use the wireless (obviously.) I am using Open SuSE version 11.2 and I have run the updater. I could not see my wireless network before running the updater and I can now so I know that the updates have helped but I am again stuck. I have tried to search the wireless forum and I have tried to tinker with the settings in YaST , but nothing seems to be working. Reading the Welcome page of the wireless forum, I tried the Broadcom chip-set advice:

I have read and taken to heart the advice given for receiving help and if any more is needed I will gladly give it. I have a small amount of experience with SuSE Enterprise edition so I can understand some technical stuff but I am best at following specific instructions.

Jul 31, 2011Dell Studio 1735 w/BCM4312 WEP fails to connect even though I'm using the 10 character HEX key. It connects fine when there's no security on my Linksys WRT310N router. Ubuntu, Windows 7, my Samsung TV and TiVo all connect fine with the 10 character HEX key, but with opensuse 11.4 I can't connect.

Aug 15, 2011First of all, trying to install it was a disaster as it tried to format my DVD drive and I was forced to delete my Windows partitions too. That's not why I'm writing, just thought I'd mention that I was already frustrated to begin with
Anyway, I have an HP G62-340US laptop. Everything seems to be running great except that I cannot turn on my wireless. The laptop has a key on the keyboard to power up the wifi and it's permanently off. Not sure if this is an issue with the keyboard driver, but pressing the wifi key does nothing.
I've tried scanning the hardware to determine what wifi device I have, but since it's not powered up, Linux doesn't even see it.
Any ideas which direction I should look?
As a side note, I have used Linux fairly regularly for several years. Mostly Ubuntu, LinuxMint and PinguyOS (all debian-based). So I'm not a complete newbie and am perfectly comfortable with the command line and configuration files.

I just installed Kubuntu, and my wireless is not getting detected. I tried a variety of solutions I found online, but none worked. It worked perfectly for Ubuntu Gnome.

Feb 5, 2011I am having trouble getting my wireless internet working on Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Studio 1535 laptop. My wireless card works just fine in an earlier version (8.10) of Ubuntu. In fact, it worked right out of the box on Intrepid. However, in 9.10, I can not get it to work. I have installed Wicd Network Manager in it, and it shows no networks visible, even though if I reboot and go into my 8.10 version (I have a multiboot), opening Wicd will immediately show several wireless networks within range. So I'm thinking that the 9.10 version is missing a driver for my wireless card, which 8.10 has.

Here, "enable_msi=1" was not initially included in sound.conf, I added. After adding I find that volume change buttons are working, but sound is not coming. Mixer channels are all set to active mode and vol is MAX to 100. Mixer channels show two tabs -- one showing HDA_Intel and the other showing HDA_ATI_HDMI. Mic Jack mode is Line_in.
Networking :: Dell Inspiron 1545 Ethernet And Wireless Won't Connect On Ubuntu Studio
Sep 14, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card and a Marvell Yukon 88e8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller, and I cannot for the life of me get the internet to connect. I've tried both wired and wireless connection. I have a PPoE connection through a Verizon FIOS Actiontek router I believe, though the PPoE part may be wrong, I had one five years ago when I first got their internet so they may have changed it. Point is that the ethernet and internet won't work, and without a working ethernet I can't fetch the right drivers for anything.
I had also tried plain ubuntu 10.04 and couldn't get them to work then either. It said 'disconnected' at first, and then said 'device not ready' There is no hardware switch but there is a key toggle. It doesn't seem to matter what state the wireless was in before booting into Ubuntu Studio, so I'm lost as to where to even start. Even though the network manager isn't there like in regular ubuntu, I assume there will be a simple way to connect to the internet once the drivers are found, right?
I've seen issues and read about fixing them, but usually it uses an ethernet connection to fix the wifi connection and, being new to linux (<50 hours worth of experience lifetime), all I managed to do trying to fix it myself was screw up the installation to the point where the laptop couldn't access the home folder and I had to reinstall. Other than that, I am usually very good at following instructions, as long as they apply to my laptop's issue I guess
The only other issue is minor, I can't seem to control the USB mouse I have, but the trackpad works fine so it's no big deal, probably a matter of downloading the mouse driver once the internet works.
Currently I do have internet access via the same laptop while booting Windows 7 (I installed Ubuntu Studio 10.04 on a 10GB Partition with the idea of using an external HD for most data storage).
Oh and it is a 64-bit machine, the Studio version I installed is 32-bit.

Dec 13, 2010I just completed installing openSuse 11.1 I followed the detailed steps given in Getting Your Wireless to Work When I try to scan for available APs in the vicinity, I get the following error.

Feb 18, 2011I have loaded the latest version of opensuse and I have everything working but I cannot connect to my wireless WPA2 network. I have downloaded the bcm43xx firmware using the method /usr/sbin/install_bcm43xx_firmware I then restarted the network. The computer will now read the network card and will find networks but I cannot get it to connect at all. At first it would connect using ifup in yast but would disconnect after a few seconds. It would never connect through NM. I have a usb network card that works just fine. I am lost as to how to fix this problem.

I have a dual boot with Windows XP and I am able to turn on the card with keystroke Function/F2 and it works while in Windows. Jan 10, 2011I have an HP Compaq 6735s with a Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g draft-n wireless card that I've been running 9.10 (the karmic koala one I think it was called) on for the past 7 or 8 months (been running Ubuntu in general for the last couple years). The card won't turn on--the indicator light is always orange, not blue as it should be. I thought it might be a hardware problem so I took it to a shop, but they tested it several times and said the card was fine and that upgrading my software should solve the problem.
I just upgraded it to the 10.10 distro (usually a friend did my upgrades for me but alas that's no longer an option) but that has not fixed it. I thought to try and re-download the Broadcom drivers on a different computer, then transfer them to my laptop, but when I did that and tried to open the .exe file, a message popped up saying the file was no good. (Can you tell I'm not a computer pro yet? Haha) Any idea how I could fix this or what the problem might be? I'm really frustrated as it's been an issue for the last six months, plus this is my only computer and I need it to function fully for purposes of finding a job, etc. If I could I'd just buy a different computer at this point (really disappointed with HP laptops in general) but sadly that's not an option. I'm to the point where I'd consider running Windows again just to make the damn thing work.
