Software :: Dell Studio 1555 - No Caps Lock LED - Software?

Apr 14, 2010

I have recently owned a Dell Studio 1555 with Windows 7 preinstalled. Incredibly, it does't have any leds on it that indicate things such as hdd activity or even caps lock! "Fortunately", Dell has provided me with an app "DellSet" that indicates on-screen when caps lock is on or off. I was wondering if there was any program that could do the same thing on linux so I can finally migrate to Ubuntu on my notebook.

Red Hat :: Drivers N Dependencies 4 Dell Studio 1555

Apr 20, 2009

h/w config :

GPU-ati4570 512 mb
WiFi-intel5100 half mini card.

The ethernet card manufacturer is Broadcom, dunno the exact number but its same in all the new laptops as the chipset is Intel's GM45.

I tried the drivers supplied by Dell but they all gave dependency errors. Since Internet is not working I can't resolve any.

The distro is RHEL 5.

Ubuntu :: Intermittent Disconnects With 10.04 And Dell Studio 1555?

May 19, 2010

I upgraded my Dell studio 1555 to Ubuntu 10.04, and now I don't seem to be able to stay connected to the wireless for more than a few minutes. Network manager never notices the disconnect, and it will usually reconnect on it's own in 10-15 minutes, but it just cycles like this endlessly. The wireless worked perfectly in 9.10 and I'm not really sure what is going on. Has anyone else seen this behavior, or maybe has an idea of something I can try? In addition I am having a problem with my laptop freezing. This happened in 9.10, but was very infrequent, now it seems to happen multiple times a night, and seems to be associated with my wireless making a connection. I'm currently posting from my Win7 partition because ubuntu us mostly useless right now.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installing 11.04 On Dell Studio 1555

Aug 21, 2011

Has anyone tried that? I have a Dell Studio 1555 running 64-bit Ubuntu 9.10 for about 2 years with almost no issues but I plan to upgrade it straight to 11.04 64-bit (using fresh install because I also want to format the HDD and partition it in a different way).

What I'm reading in the web is though a bit discouraging as there seem to be a lot of issues with 11.04 running on this particular Dell model. Quite a shame as Dell is supposed to provide good experience on Linux since they had been selling laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled (or they used to...).

Red Hat / Fedora :: Installing 9 With Vista Dual Boot On Dell Studio 1555

Jun 4, 2009

I got a Dell Studio 1555 preinstalled with Vista and it already had 3 Primary Partitions. I needed to install Fedora Core 9 on this machine and to organize my HDD(500 GB)

I had two options:
1) Either to create a fourth primary partition
2) Create an extended partition with a number of logical partitions

I chose the option 2. I want to know if i make some free space by deleting one of the logical partitions, can that free space be used for installing Fedora ?

Also how to proceed with the installation?

General :: Change The Caps Lock Key To Control And Still Keep The On/off Nature Of Caps Lock?

Oct 13, 2010

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.

Hardware :: Caps Lock Notification For OpenSUSE 11.4 - KDE 4 On Dell Inspiron

May 6, 2011

I'm sure someone has had this problem before. On the Dell Inspiron N4010 (and many other laptops, I've discovered) there is for some idiotic reason no LED indicator for the Caps Lock state. Dell provides a little Windows 7 program that will put up a pop-up on the screen, but that is singularly useless to me when I'm running openSUSE or Ubuntu on this machine. Does anyone know of a KDE 4 widget that will notify me when caps-lock is on?

I did find another thread on this issue here: [url] But the "kkeyled" program seems to have not been updated since KDE 3.4 and I got a package dependency error when I tried to install it.

Another option, I suppose, would be if anyone knows how to disable the Caps Lock key altogether....

Software :: Caps/Num Lock GDM/GDM3 On Squeeze?

Aug 26, 2010

I recently decided to replace Lenny on my laptop with Squeeze. All went fine, but now with both GDM and GDM3, the Caps and Num locks come on when GDM starts, and behave erratically. I have to hit the caps/num lock key several times to disable the lock, and sometimes it will come on again after a random time. This behavior persists into my GNOME session. I'll be working on code and *&%#! -- on comes the caps/num locks.

Initially I thought this was an X issue. I uninstalled GDM3 (which is the version installed by squeeze) and logged in at the console then started X via startx. The caps and num locks remained off and behaved in the normal manner. I then tried SLiM, and again the keys behaved normally. Then I tried GDM (2.20 in the squeeze repos), and it behaved the same as GDM3. Even though I purged GDM3 and GDM, I'm wondering if there's some residual configuration data in my home directory, but I can't seem to find anything related. Using SLiM isn't so bad, but once I log in I get asked to unlock the keyring, so typing my password twice to log gets annoying.

Debian Multimedia :: Swapping Caps Lock And Escape In X?

Feb 24, 2010

For a good while I used the following code to swap caps lock and escape, which is very beneficial to me as I have vim-like keybindings in most of the apps that I use:remove Lock = Caps_Lock

add Lock = Escape
keysym Caps_Lock = Escape
keysym Escape = Caps_Lock
followed by xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap, which I got from http://vim.wikia.com

/wiki/Map_caps_lock_to_escape_in_XWindows. However, after a recent Debian upgrade with aptitude, this stopped working - or, it does work poorly, in that caps lock toggles caps lock and acts as escape, so I have to press it twice all the time. Is there a better way to do this with X, since my solution stopped working?

Ubuntu :: Disable Caps Lock With Xmodmap In Natty?

Apr 29, 2011

I just upgraded machine to natty, after which the xmodmap configuration remapping capslock stopped working (as in not doing anything at all). Running xmodmap manually (-e "clear Lock") doesn't have any visible effect either. I haven't tried doing this on another machine (I'm only close to one machine running ubuntu and reinstalling seems rather overkill), but the same config worked before the upgrade, and is working on another machine running arch.

Is anyone else having these issues and, if so, has anybody found a solution? The line of interest is, simply, "clear Lock".
