I'm wondering if there's a way so that several people can log onto my computer at the same time. When they connect it goes to the login screen and they choose their account and log in. Everybody has a different account and sees a different desktop. Is that possible?

I found that if any usual user is logged into a NDS-tree, then _local_ root has full access to user's network shares, including the user's home directory located on remote Netware-server. Is it by design or
have I missed something? Nevertheless in windows local admin has no access to network resources mounted of any other user. If you runas shell (as admin) then admin in principle can't "see" network shares which were mounted (connected) by other users - they are accessible ("visible") per session.
Anyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.

The server is running under debian sid and the client under fedora 13 beta. I don't have any idea what may be wrong.. selinux perhaps?
I've got a USB Epson Perfection1200 (usb-id: 04b8:0104) connected to my Fedora 13 x86_64 system. The scanner works fine for me, the console user. If someone logs in to the system via "ssh -X ..." and starts "xsane", xsane reports that no scanner is available.
Googling turns up countless recommendations, mostly identical, which pretty much say:
1. find usb device (lsusb)
2. find bus and dev IDs
3. chmod 666 /dev/bus/usb/BUSID/DEVID
this is a best a miserable hack. I would like to know how to adapt the permissions that hald uses when a usb device is connected. Does someone understand this and can explain it?
When I start an upgrade or dist-upgrade from single-user mode, and walk away for a long time, I will have found that some packages insist on prompting for answers to questions midway through. That requires me to physically check the console periodically, and that becomes less practical for long upgrades.Is there a way for me to somehow remote into that console and answer any prompts that would popup? By "way" I mean not involving KVM switches or other hardware other than the LAN setup I have now (i.e., I am able to ssh into the machine being updated from another machine, but not when the machine is in single-user mode).
BTW, the reason I am using single-user mode is that, in the past, I have had problems with upgrading packages like GNOME when I am logged into the GNOME Desktop.
In the past, I've installed Internet services as daemons and as xinetd.d with no problems. Those approaches do not meet my needs. And, perhaps, nothing will.
- the service was converted from VB-6 to wxPython. It has a GUI which is accessed with either "remote desktop" or VNC.
- the wxPython service works on Windows and can be accessed from other hosts on my LAN
- the wxPython service works on CentOS and Fedora, but can only be accessed from within the server host. Even from other user-ids. But, I cannot get to it from other hosts.
- ipchains AKA firewall ports are marked for INPUT.
- The server host uses autologin to fire up a useid in group "user". I do not want it running as "root". the .bash_profile fires the service up.
- the service is heavily mult-threaded, and supports devices connected to serial ports asynchronously with the ephemeral port threads (all this works).
There are some programming solutions that I would rather not develop.
- a proxy service that runs under xinetd.d.
- separate the GUI code from the Internet and serial port code. Allocate a "control" port for remote GUI control. a'la SAMBA & SWAT
Is there any hope, that I can run it as is, by doing some network configuration stuff.

-processes (amount and no same process multiply)
-connections (amount of connections (to specific host))

I'm trying to set up some scripts from one machine that I can use to remotely lock all of my workstations remotely. I have a virtual ubuntu machine ported out to the internet w/ ssh open and I'm using ServerAssistant on my droidX phone to kick off the scripts. I have all of my ssh keys shared between the boxes so I don't have to log on. Everything works beautifully for one machine, a regular Ubuntu 10.10 box with a single video card with 2 monitors. ssh -X brainstem@zappa "export DISPLAY=:0; gnome-screensaver; gnome-screensaver-command -l" But my other desktop, a triple monitor ubuntu studio 10.04 box (2 vid cards) will not kick off with the same syntax as above (obviously different computer name). If I execute the command manually from the remote machine, it doesn't work either. Just to make sure, I ran "gnome-screensaver-command -l" locally on this box just to make sure that part works - it locks the machine locally just fine. I just can't seem to get it to work from another machine. I've tried from 2 different boxes and have the same results. I can do anything else I want over ssh and it all works.
I would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?

On install I have no problem adding myself back to the system,but when try to add the other users who already have a home folder but no logon, I get an error saying the other accounts are already in use, but they still have no way to log on
I have Lucid setup for multi user. Whenever 2 users are logged in and one logs off, it freezes on a black screen. It looks like it logs off OK and is on its way to the main login screen but never gets there. I found some older posts describing this problem but no solution. I tried to post to that thread but got a message saying I was not permitted. I am new to Linux and am struggling to figure out how to problem solve issues in Ubuntu.

It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.

Thing is now, I can't access my external hard drive or any usb thumb drives I plug in. Normally when they would just open up after I plug them it, I get an error saying "unable to mount, Not Authorized". How I can regain access to this? I am using Linux Mint 10
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?

Actually, the server could not start some processes; but was able to ask user to enter his account username. Even though, he enters the correct username and password, server does not accept the request. I also could not login as root.
I just checked the server logs by booting it in single user mode. Here are some interesting lines:

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 2GB file which is a dd image of a block device. The block device (a USB-connected flash memory) contains multiple partitions, and therein lies the problem. I want/need to access the various partitions in the image file, but need to do this without actually using a physical flash memory device. If the image was that of a single partition, I could simply mount it on a loop device, and access the filesystem as necessary. However, I can find no kind of virtual block device upon which to write/mount the image.
I've searched the net exhaustively for anything that would seem to allow me to do what I need, but without even a sniff of success. Sadly, I have seen bits of information that suggest "you can't get there from here". Even the outstanding dd tutorial by AwesomeMachine on LQ didn't help. Anyone know of a kind of virtual block device on which a multi-partition image can be written and mounted? Or any other way I can access individual partitions (with various filesystem types on each) and then re-assemble them back to a single image?
Original HOWTO can be found at: [URL]... So the other day I was in IRC and someone had brought up a problem where they created a new Administrative user, but didnt have rights to use sudo. Looked into the problem a little bit to figure out what was wrong, and it turns out that when you create a new user through the user manager (in kubuntu, anyways. Havent tested in Gnome.) the user gets added to the adm group, however, a quick look at the sudoers file shows that its looking for users in the admin group to allow the use of sudo. So, to solve the problem we do the following: If youre on the new admin user (which Im assuming you are) use the following commands:

sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
exit
Then simply logout, and then log back in (not always necessary, but the easiest way to flush the permissions.)

Means were going to Switch User to the old admin account

This simply adds the admin group to the secondary group list for the new user

I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.

I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
I am trying to give access to ONE single user to start and shutdown tomcat server. The problem being, when I enter syntax: username ALL= /etc/init.d/tomcat5, /usr/local/tomcat/webapps, PASSWD:ALL This gives the user access to start and stop tomcat but also gives user access to start and stop other services within /etc/init.d - such as httpd etc... What is the proper way to give user access to start and stop service, and limiting that power to only one service....
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).
