Using a nvidia graphic card with multi monitor with two monitors. Can I have one with xbmc and other with normal KDE (firefox, xchat, ...).
Can I do this in linux (Slackware)?
I have a dual monitor setup with a nVidia 7300 card. I'm not sure exactly when this started to happen, but it's happened for a couple of years at least. when I'm in one or the other monitor the cursor will sometimes "stick" in that monitor and refuse to go to the other monitor. it'll just 'wrap around' as when I go to the right part of the monitor, it'll then jump to the left side, and vice versa. Also once in awhile, if I'm in one monitor, the cursor will be taken away and put on the other monitor. I'm just now starting to see a few patterns on what's happening. It's worse if I have VCL playing in the left monitor, (my secondary), and I've got a program maximized in the right (primary) monitor. That's when it'll 'stick' on the right monitor. After I roll up the program or minimize it, then it'll free the mouse. But it's not instant. After it's freed, it still doesn't work exactly. If you click on any program on the left monitor, then you have to move back and forth before the mouse will work on the left monitor.
The second problem I'm having happens only on the secondary monitor. At times the precision is WAY off. For example, if I try to put the mouse right on an icon, and click it. It won't work. But if I move the mouse over to the right or left, suddenly the pop-up comment box pops up, the icon is highlighted and clicking will run the program. It can be off as much as 100 pixels! I've seen these problems in all sorts of GUIs; XFCE, DXCE, KDE 3.x (I never tried it in KDE 4.x since it was nearly unusable) and Gnome. Right now I've only see this on Ubuntu 8.04.01, to 9.10 (I never went past 9.10), and at first I thought it was X since all GUIs had problems. But someone now says that nVidia's driver might be to blame. If you can tell me what command to type in at the terminal, I can supply the current video driver's version.
I used preupgrade to upgrade from F11 to F12. In F11, I used the proprietary nVidia drivers from rpmfusion, and they worked well. I have refrained from installing the nVidia drivers in F12, because of the problems reported for users of KDE. I removed my old xorg.conf, which has references to the nVidia driver and to "TwinView," the proprietary method of managing two screens, so as to let X discover both monitors.
Now, however, my second monitor stays black, even though xrandr and KDE RandR show both monitors correctly. Xorg.0.log shows the nouveau driver is loaded. (I also tried to create a new xorg.conf following guidelines from the web, but many of the guidelines are from before xrandr, and I'm not confident I have it right yet.) It seems that X believes I have two monitors, because I can drag a window off into the blackness (and it's never heard from again!) I know that the hardware is working, because I just booted into Windows 7, and I could see the desktop on both windows.
How do I convince X and KDE to display on both monitors?
I inserted another graphics card to my computer to use 3 monitors. The card appears in lspci but I can't access it in gnome.
What do I have to do to set this up.

As described in further detail below I am looking for some help in Ubuntu 10.10 with a multi-monitor + multi-gpu setup using both ATI and Nvidia video cards installed within the same system (que scoffs and jeers). Is it possible to sucessfully run both ATI and NVidia GPU's and Drivers simultaneously in Ubuntu 10.10 (think multi-monitor environment)? I am asking b/c I am having trouble figuring out how to manage my video cards - particularly ATI - within a multi-monitor + multi-gpu video card environment.
Here's the setup:
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
x2 - NVidia 6800XT SLi GPU's + 2 DVI outputs/per card (Serviceable card for my needs)
x1 - ATI Rage XL PCI Card + 1 VGA output (Yes, ancient hardware...I know)

how is the support for multiple, two or more, monitors in ubuntu (10.04) when using a graphic cards from AMD(/ATI), for example the HD 5770. (Which I'm currently using). I know that DP is required to use three monitors on a regular card. But other than that, will it work? Am I to expect a lot of work to be able to get it working? Or will it simply be impossible? (And yes, I know that AMDs(/ATI) drivers aren't always the best... Although changing to a card from nvidia at this moment isn't possible)
The background to my question is that I'm thinking about buying another monitor, same model as the current one I'm using, and later on perhaps expand to buy another one.Tried to search for it but wasn't able to find how the support would be in linux, and ubuntu in particular, since most I found is about the windows support, which should work quite easy and therefore isn't relevant.
In Fedora 10, I cannot get to the installer because it shows these messed up strips graphics (its not due to my graphic card, my graphic card is supported 7600gt) in non-quiet install it shows logical errors and i/o errors.
View 12 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I also have Galaxy (Nvidia) 9500 GT PCI-E card installed on it. I can get both monitors (Acer X223w) to work but every time I shut off the computer and turn it back on the second monitor is shut off. I just need to turn it back on using Nvidia X Server Settings. I have tried to save my X configuratin file but I keep getting an error of:" Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'. I have a feeling this is because I am not signed in as root. Is this correct? If this is the case is there a way to get to sign in as root not using the command lines? Otherwise they need to remove this button. I can manually create a backup (copy paste into a text file). I think. Getting back to my Xorg.conf file, I think I need to modify it to have two screens. I have also got some information on my video card using the lspci command. I think I need some information from this. I have written below (towards the bottom) what I think the file should be. Now before I do this, does anybody know of an easy way to back up my whole computer? With my luck I am about to screw something up big time. I think I can just get away with the text file that I copied from the Xorg. Worst case scenario I will just manually replace the file.

Okay, this is what I think I need to do: I tried to add color to make it easier to find the changes I made but for some reason I cannot. I will add **** on the end (right side) so my additions and questions will be easier to find.
Do I need to add another Device for the video? Doesn't make sense to me since I only have one video card. I was told it should be based on the # of chips on the card. So I guess I should have two of them since I have two outputs.
I tried to install the NVIDIA graphic card drivers on my laptop XPS 1340, running with opensuse 11.2. There are two graphic cards, the integrated one and the NVIDIA one. I installed the drivers correctly by doing

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd be grateful for any suggestions to get a second TV/Monitor to work in addition to the desktop monitor for a PC which runs Lenny. The first monitor is a small TFTLCD 15". Works perfectly with a GEForce FX 5200 nvidia graphic card and uses the 173.14.09 driver. Having obtained an SVGA cable, I connected the card to a rather larger 32" LCD Panasonic TX-L32S10B TV to enable some armchair viewing of internet etc for my parents. The Panasonic TV or monitor shows all the boot messages but the graphical server fails to start. I know that both screens work, either alternatively or simultaneously, having tested with a Puppy live CD.
However, running
nvidia-xconfig --twinview results in an incorrect screen resolution for the 15" TFT Monitor; Gnome Screen Resolution Preferences gives a rather surprising fixed setting of 2048x786/50Hz when the maximum should be 1024x768. The resulting xorg.conf file is:

I am new to Suse Linux. So please excuse me for this "funny" query. have read the threads: Configuring graphics cards in openSUSE 11.3
From here I went to this page: SDB:Configuring graphics cards - openSUSE Its mentioned on this page that: Upon installing openSUSE, the X system's automatic configuration may have failed to properly configure the graphics correctly. Typically this results in either a black screen upon reboot, or the wrong resolution being displayed on the monitor.
I have none of these problems. But after searching for inability of desktop effects to become activated, I found that nVIDIA graphic card drivers are must for these effects. After clicking "My computer" icon on desktop, I found Display Info as following:

3D driver: nouveau Gallium (7.8.2)
Can anyone tell me 'Is nouveau an alternative for nVIDIA'? Is this the reason for no wrong resolution or black screen upon boot. That means my computer graphics are working correctly. Then why does Desktop Effects are not getting enabled.
After searching for Kaffeine media player extra codecs to play media files, I incidentally found the following options: I opened Yast Control Center @ linux-o26a Software> Add on Products > installed Add-On Products > Community Repositories > clicking Next, this opened a window with "List of Online repositories" where there is an option of "NVIDIA Repository". If I install it, will it enable the "Desktop effects"
I have been playing around a bit today and decided to hook my tv up to my slack box. I have an NVIDIA gt220 using the proprietary drivers which supports multiple monitors and I can get various setups like an extended desktop and xinerama, but what I can not seem to do, and what I'd actually like to do, is just have both the monitor and the TV display the same images. If it would work better/easier I also have a second NVIDIA card, although it is a different model. I haven't bothered trying that yet as it seems like it would be easier to configure one card instead of two.

So:Do I have both 32- and 64- bit bindary drivers installed as part of the package from Slackbuilds.org?
Could I avoid all this hassle by simply not installing the mesa-compat32 package?
If I do need to reinstall the Nvidia binary driver, do I just upgradepkg --reinstall nvidia-driver-195.36.15-x86_64-1_SBo.tgz?

So I finally got ubuntu..I wanted to play team fortress 2.Runs great in wine etc.But 1 problem.It keeps saying my graphic card is outdated.I cant see anything.So I downloaded the driver from nvidia website.Followed some instructions.But it says cannot open binary file or something.Is there any other way to update graphic drivers.Cause I realy still want to play some windows games.Mount&blade, Atlantica online,team fortress 2 etc

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).

Both cards have monitors plugged into their VGA ports, but only one of the monitors shows a display. The other monitor goes into power saver mode right after start up. Nvidia X Server settings only shows a single graphics card (the 8200) and a single monitor (detect monitor finds nothing). Going through Prefences: Monitors also only shows a single monitor and doesn't detect a thing when detect monitors is clicked.
Monitor one has 1440 x 900 resolution and I'm not sure what the resolution of Monitor two is supposed to be, but it displays rather nicely at being set to 1440 x 900.
Both graphics cards are detected and usable in Vista, but a quick switch of the plugs shows that only the 8200 is registering in Ubuntu.
Ideally I want to have a dual monitor set up, with one screen showing documents or pictures with the other using Gimp or Blender.
I have repeatedly installed CentOS 5.5 64-bit on a Dell T3500 with an nVidia Quadro FX 580, in an attempt to get dual monitor support to work to no avail. Everything works fine when just one monitor is plugged in and I do not try to enable or plug in a second monitor. I have installed the Dell DKMS, and the Dell recommended drivers (from Dell site) on one installation, I installed the nVidia drivers (from nVidia site) on another, and have tried with what CentOS loads by default on another. The results are the same every time: When I reboot as directed I get a black screen. I can recover by hard shutdown and unplugging one of the monitors, but that doesn't solve my problem. Has anyone had a similar experience, or have any helpful guidance? I am not very Linux savvy. This is for multiple machines in a corporate environment.

Googling about this error i found a old post,it could be outfated that sugested editing xorg.conf. I created a xorg.conf using "Xorg -configure" and i modified the screen section to this:

I'm trying to get 4 monitors working in Ubuntu 11.04 the way I would like to. I have two Radeon video cards with two monitors connected to each. With proprietary ATI drivers and the Catalyst Control Center I'm able to see all the monitors and Have Multi-Display setups, but they're separated for each video card. I can move items to and from Monitor 1 to Monitor 2, and Monitor 3 to Monitor 4. I'm not able to move windows from 2 to 3 or 4. The two separate display setups have their own set of workspaces too. I've tried enabling xinerama, but when I log back in after a restart the screen is just black and I'm forced to reboot manually. The two separate displays wouldn't be that much of a problem except that my keyboard doesn't seem to work on any application opened on monitors 3 and 4 after I've clicked on something in Monitor 1 or 2.

After installing "nvidia-driver" and "nvidia-kernel" through "sbopkg" I ran "glxinfo | grep -i nvidia" as user (not root) Shows: "Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0". GLUT: Fatal Error in glxinfo: OpenGL GLX extension not supported by display: :0.0" I'm really sure that there is a problem with this or error instead. Does anyone know of an alsa based software multi-band (10 or more) graphic audio frequency equalizer that works with Suse 11.x? To be clear, I don't mean an equalizer within an audio or video player. I am sure I missing something from my xorg.conf but at this point I am not sure what I have been searching on this for days to no avail. From the log the only thing that looks like is a problem is it doesn't load the keyboard and mouse but it gets loaded later on in the file.
how to on enable ling separate X sessions with dual monitors in slackware? In rhel all I have to do is enable it under the nvidia-settings... In slackware it does not work that well... to what I understand you have to configure a separate x session...
