Ubuntu :: The Dreaded Number Lock Won't Work?
May 2, 2010
Number lock won't stay on or off. There doesn't seem to be any pattern. I'll be typing, and use the number keypad to move the cursor to the far left or right, and get a number instead. Or the opposite will happen.have tried ctrl-alt-numlock. I have tried installing numlockx. I have tried, in fact, every solution listed here that I can find. I had the same problem with 9.04, and found a terminal command (I think) that fixed it.But I didn't save the solution anywhere, and I can't find the post with that solution in the forums.

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.
I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.
Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

I want to buy a new external USB hard disk drive, and my eye was drawn by the 1TB CORE External Desktop USB 2.0 Very appealing was the comment "Plug n Play - no software to install". But then I noticed the sentence: "Includes DES lock - Protect all your important files." This set the alarm bells ringing. If the drive comes with a DES protection lock, is this likely to work with Ubuntu? Or is it going to be a Windows-only thing, locking me out cos I don't use Windows?

I'm trying to set up some scripts from one machine that I can use to remotely lock all of my workstations remotely. I have a virtual ubuntu machine ported out to the internet w/ ssh open and I'm using ServerAssistant on my droidX phone to kick off the scripts. I have all of my ssh keys shared between the boxes so I don't have to log on. Everything works beautifully for one machine, a regular Ubuntu 10.10 box with a single video card with 2 monitors. This is the script contents:
Code:
ssh -X brainstem@zappa "export DISPLAY=:0; gnome-screensaver; gnome-screensaver-command -l" But my other desktop, a triple monitor ubuntu studio 10.04 box (2 vid cards) will not kick off with the same syntax as above (obviously different computer name). If I execute the command manually from the remote machine, it doesn't work either. Just to make sure, I ran "gnome-screensaver-command -l" locally on this box just to make sure that part works - it locks the machine locally just fine. I just can't seem to get it to work from another machine. I've tried from 2 different boxes and have the same results. I can do anything else I want over ssh and it all works.

I purchased a lighted keyboard, on the net.
Black LED Lighted Keyboard W-9868BK USB
The scroll lock key is the key that turns the back light on/off. Num light works/caps light works, but the scroll lock light does not on F12 or Ubuntu Thinking it may be a soft ware problem after trying different usb slots, I dug out an old XP machine and it works.

I have a HP Pavilion dv4 that is 4 months old. Yesterday it suddenly seemed to restart then once I logged in it turned off. When I tried to turn it on some of the lights came on and the caps lock and num lock started flashing. Since then I have not been able to get it to work correctly. It once seemed to turn on but died again after the login window.I tried to use my live cd but the same thing happened. It started loading once, but then shut down again. Every other time it stayed dead minus the lights

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]
The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.
The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'
I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

There is a very strange problem I've been having. When I enable either Caps Lock or Num Lock the media controls on my keyboard cease to work. I have Googled this one to death but found nothing. This problem existed in Xubuntu 9.10 and now still exists in Xubuntu 10.04. The keyboard I use is a Logitech Elite Keyboard. I would love to be able to use the Caps Lock and Num Lock without the worry that I am disabling the media controls

I have just burned the latest CD using infraRecorder, as per the instructions on this site, however when I boot from this CD, it spends about 5 minutes moving the red balls across my screen, then all of the sudden it just freezes, and my caps and scroll lock lights start to blink. I've had a look in the forums already but there's nothing about this happening on Boot of the live CD.

I am having a very annoying problem with my laptop.I am experiencing many freezes. When my laptop freezes, it shows the caps lock and scroll lock lights blinking. At first I thought it was a problem with flash (here is original thread: URL... )In the original thread, I thought the freeze's were being caused by the flashplayer, but it apparently isn't the case. The last time I experienced the freeze, I was playing around with the compiz desktop effects.

I'm running fedora 13 on a Dell Latitude E6500. It's a dual 64-bit system.
It was working, but then I tried to swap caps lock and control.
I used:
System->Preferences->Keyboard
Layouts->USA->Options
Then, under Control Key Position, I selected swap caps lock and control.
Now, my keyboard won't work in the Keyboard Preferences test area or in any other window or when the screen-lock comes on.
I tried logging out. I tried rebooting. I tried deleting my .gnome2 directory. Nothing seems to work. I can use the keyboard on other accounts, so the keyboard is not the problem.

Trying to use my Viewsonic VG171b LCD connected w/DVI on a used system I just bought (2.6.32-25-generic, Ubuntu) and am just getting the dreaded "Out of Range" error on the monitor no matter what I try. Have been working on this for two days and never once have I gotten anything but Out of Range. When I try to login as a user, I get the dreaded "500 OOPS: cannot change directory:". Almost every posting I can find related to this problem was due to SELinux being enabled. My SELinux is operating in permissive mode. So why can't it open the home directory when I log in as the tarheelnk user?

I upgraded my home server to an Asus P5N-D mobo with 8GB of RAM and a quad-core CPU.Installed CentOS 5.5 x86_64 fresh and yum updated it.Frustratingly, the box locks up on an irregular basis - twice today for example. By "locks up" I mean:- any connected SSH sessions no longer respond- no more video output on the video card (monitor goes into power save)- most of the time, the kernel will not even respond to pinging the box from another hostI thought perhaps it was an add-on RAID card, but I've removed it with no change. I've rebuilt the drives using software raid. The BIOS offers RAID but I have it set to disabled.
I ran memtest on the RAM and it worked fine. The RAM was moved from my previous mobo and ran fine for a month or so.I set up kern.* in syslog to go to /var/log/kern.log, but nothing shows up there - apparently the lockup is so sudden there is no time to write syslog.I do see these in dmesg periodically, primarily when writing NFS to an another old server:Dec 14 21:21:48 hallofjustice kernel: INFO: task mv:28154 blocked for more than 120 seconds.Dec 14 21:21:48 hallofjustice kernel: "echo 0 >/proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs" disables this message.

After asking on both this forum and the Fedora forum, I felt it was safe enough to install a copy of Fedora on my working-well openSUSE drive. I have a 1 TB drive, partitioned as follows:
I did an install of Fedora 13, was VERY careful to set up the installer to put it's files in the partitions I wanted, although I did let it mark the partition as active, feeling it may have to boot during the installation process.
I had grub installed in the root of the partition rather than the MBR for both systems.
When Fedora finished installing, I rebooted the system only to find that it wouldn't. I got the dreaded "No Boot Device" message.
So, I started the 5 hour process of booting with the parted magic disk, booting with a Gentoo live disk (only one around), monkeying with the install parts of the openSUSE and Fedora disks, swapping drives to Windows to download openSUSE Live CDs (yes, both) and searching the forums and various other web sites for some poor bloke who did the same stupid whatever it was I did, and finally, as I was using fdisk on the Gnome Live CD, I noticed the warning message stating that fdisk would not work on a drive that was partitioned with the GPD format.
Notice that I have 5 partitions? That is not a typo on my part, I used the GPD format when I set it up so I could do what I did without using "imitation" partitions.
When I used parted (the command line editor on the Gnome Live CD) to change the active partition, everything started working again! Well, at least I can boot the openSUSE system, the most important thing.
It is my suspicion that the Fedora install uses fdisk to do it's work, and fdisk just mucks up a GPD formatted disk. Not the information, just the part of the drive that holds the partition table. Perhaps just the flags section. I don't know enough to say with any certainty.
I didn't change the drives parameters during the installation of Fedora, so I don't know of it even offers the GPD partitioning option. If not, I can understand how this sort of thing could happen.
Still....So now all I have to do is make the grub menu, the one installed with openSUSE, boot the Fedora installation on the next partition. Seems simple enough.

Can I change the Caps Lock key to Control and still keep the on/off nature of Caps Lock? I've checked into using xmodmap and seem to have hit a dead end. Many people want to swap them, but they also want to swap the way they work. I'd rather keep my new Control key as an on/off switch for Control.
