OpenSUSE Install :: Installing 11.3 With/without Burning?
Nov 30, 2010i've decided that i wanna learn a bit of linux, and so i tried to install suse... i've come to have a lot of problems:i downloaded both the KDE Live CD and the DVD (4++ gb), both 64 bit.i dunno about the software there, but should i get the 32 bit version becouse is more likely they works or the 64 bit is fine?
what i'd like to do is overwrite my windows 7 (basically get rid of it, only way for me to use linux).i tried installing from Live CD (burned) but it does not seems to work, tried the USB thing but still something is wrong, is like is not recognized... i can't burn 4++ gb so i was wondering if there is a way to use the ISO w/o burning it... ofc i tried but in the boot menu it asks for a CD so nothing to do.

Mar 8, 2010I'm trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 from iso image without burning it in a DVD.. because I don't have a CD or DVD drive.I'm using Windows Vista.firstly I mounted the dvd image .. but thought that was wrong because when rebooting instillation won't find the image.. is that true?so, I extracted it and I opened openSUSE11_2_ LOCAL.exe. and then reboot.. got two choices (Vista or install OpenSuse) and selected install OpenSuse but my screen went "out of range" !!

Mar 20, 2010I keep getting the following error when trying to burn a DVD, and unfortunately am none the wiser as to what it means:

This is using both Brasero and K3b, the disk stops writing about halfway through on Brasero and a tenth of the way through on K3b. I'm just trying to burn a data DVD and have tried low & high speeds.

Jan 10, 2010I see there are a lot of other threads on this subject, but I don't find any solution in the other threads. I have been trying to burn cd's directly in Ubuntu, using Brasero, which was already installed. Why does it not work? It says that an "unknown error occurred" or something like that. I don't remember the exact error message right now. I am now burning cd's in "Gnomebaker" which I found in the applications list. This works fine, but only at the speed of 4x, no faster. I hope to get the brasero application to work, as this is the easiest, fastest way, just dragging files to the cd.

Jan 12, 2011I don't know what the difference is between DVD+R and DVD-R or if it matters, lol.
I was trying to burn 2.0 GB of data to a 4.7-GB DVD+R and after it finished burning, I got "There was an error writing to the disk."
When I opened the directory of the disk, it appeared that all of the files were there, but when I tried to open any of them, I got "Could not read from the resource" errors.
I tried burning it again to a fresh disk and it was the same except when I tried to open the files it said variations of "error interpreting file".
I checked the log files and mostly it was unhelpfully generic errors, except for this line:
"BraseroLibburn Asynchronous SCSI error on CLOSE TRACK SESSION: [3 73 04] Program memory area update failure"
That part was the same for both attempts. What could be causing this?

I want to resolve this without using up all of my CD's. When I try to burn the ISO it shows 39.5 MB of free space on the disc when this is a brand new CD-R with 700 MB of free space. May 29, 2011I'm running Karmic and finally decided to upgrade. When I inserted my blank disc for 11.04 Brasero shows my blank disc as "Blank CD --drive name here -- 17.5 MB free space". I proceed to burn anyway figuring that it's some kind of read error and I have nothing to lose by attempting the write. (I did in fact lose 3 discs, about 50 cents). Disc writes fine but hangs for about 5 minutes during the finalizing stage and then stops with an error.

I tested the disc for errors and every time it shows up that around the 70% mark that the DVD has an error.

Jun 27, 2011If I have a hard-disk with Ubuntu fully installed on it and I want to - all of a sudden - use Windows XP, is it mandatory that I firstly format the hard-disk first? So far, I have used two versions of Windows XP; one of them is from a few years before the other. Both copies of Windows XP when in start-up from booting from CD are causing errors. One of them is a BSOD error (0x0000007B) and the next Windows CD is stopping and giving me an error with setupdd.sys (error code 4). Is it required that the hard-disk is formatted before you even put a Windows boot CD in?

Hardware :: Frequent Error Burning "fresh Media" CD Or DVD
May 17, 2010My laptop has a DVD/RW (It is both dash "-" and plus "+" able...whatever that really means.) drive. When I want to burn media,I grab a fresh disk from my bulk supplies and load it to the drive.Trouble #1 -- Software fails to recognize the fresh media as blank.I start the burn processing ... chug chug chug ... and something goes wrong.
Trouble #2 -- Software has some trouble writing the fresh media. I grab another fresh disk and repeat, often 2 or 3 times, before I get a successful burn. Can someone tell me why I have so much trouble with getting a media burn without all of the retry activities? How do I discover exactly what is going wrong? I don't find logs or similar that explain the troubles. I use both K3B (my fave) and Brasero.

May 25, 2011i tries to upgrade my fc14 to fc15 using preupgrade. during installation packages process i get an error "fatal error bla-bla-bla installing netsniff-ng-...". i've booted in fc14 (in emergency mode) and manually removed old netsniff-ng package and installed new package. after that i've booted in preupgrade process. it finishes successfull. but now i can't boot in fc15 - i get "kernel panic" error. i've opened grub.conf and there is no 'initrd' section and there is no initramfs for fc15 in /boot folder. i've tried to boot fc15 with initrd /initramfs-bla-bla-fc14.i686.PAE.img. fc15 booted, but i think something wrong, because network not working, and there is only "lo" in ifconfig. what can i do?
