Ubuntu :: Burning 11.04 ISO Suspect Hardware - Read Error
May 29, 2011
I'm running Karmic and finally decided to upgrade. When I inserted my blank disc for 11.04 Brasero shows my blank disc as "Blank CD --drive name here -- 17.5 MB free space". I proceed to burn anyway figuring that it's some kind of read error and I have nothing to lose by attempting the write. (I did in fact lose 3 discs, about 50 cents). Disc writes fine but hangs for about 5 minutes during the finalizing stage and then stops with an error.

I keep getting the following error when trying to burn a DVD, and unfortunately am none the wiser as to what it means:
Code:
DBus error
This is using both Brasero and K3b, the disk stops writing about halfway through on Brasero and a tenth of the way through on K3b. I'm just trying to burn a data DVD and have tried low & high speeds.
Latest version of 64bit Ubuntu

I see there are a lot of other threads on this subject, but I don't find any solution in the other threads. I have been trying to burn cd's directly in Ubuntu, using Brasero, which was already installed. Why does it not work? It says that an "unknown error occurred" or something like that. I don't remember the exact error message right now. I am now burning cd's in "Gnomebaker" which I found in the applications list. This works fine, but only at the speed of 4x, no faster. I hope to get the brasero application to work, as this is the easiest, fastest way, just dragging files to the cd.

I don't know what the difference is between DVD+R and DVD-R or if it matters, lol.
I was trying to burn 2.0 GB of data to a 4.7-GB DVD+R and after it finished burning, I got "There was an error writing to the disk."
When I opened the directory of the disk, it appeared that all of the files were there, but when I tried to open any of them, I got "Could not read from the resource" errors.
I tried burning it again to a fresh disk and it was the same except when I tried to open the files it said variations of "error interpreting file".
I checked the log files and mostly it was unhelpfully generic errors, except for this line:
"BraseroLibburn Asynchronous SCSI error on CLOSE TRACK SESSION: [3 73 04] Program memory area update failure"
That part was the same for both attempts. What could be causing this?

I am trying to burn Ubuntu Server to a CD-R and I am getting a quick error after each burn attempt. I am burning on the slowest speed. I want to resolve this without using up all of my CD's. When I try to burn the ISO it shows 39.5 MB of free space on the disc when this is a brand new CD-R with 700 MB of free space. When I look at the newly burned disc it looks like Ubuntu Server is on the CD

I have an office workstatation that I installed with linux and ran a 8-core job. It is expected that the job to finish in 6 days but then it stopped after 2 days. The reason is that when I came to office this morning the workstation is completely turned off for some reason. Since the air-conditioner is turned off in the office overnight, I suspect the temperature is too high for the cpu. Is there a script to output the temperature to a file periodically so that I can pinpoint the exact cause of the shutdown ?

I'm trying to burn an audio CD with Brasero. Every time I try this, it fails, but it works when writing to an image file. Brasero quits with the following messages in log:
Code:
Checking session consistency (brasero_burn_check_session_consistency brasero-burn.c:1744)
Unsupported type of task operation
Session error : An internal error occurred (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2862)
Do you know what could be causing this?

I've downloaded the DVD version of Fedora 12 with a torrent so it shouldn't be corruped - checked the hash anyway and it wasn't - and I burnt it at a low speed and has my burning program verify that it did indeed burn what it was supposed to. I tested the disc for errors and every time it shows up that around the 70% mark that the DVD has an error.

I recently installed 10.10 Maverick on a lenovo S12, and I've been having problems with the wireless connection. First I installed the Broadcom B43 driver. This driver seems to work well except upon resume, I'm no longer connected, and wireless is disabled, and the 'enable wireless' is grayed out and I can't seem to find a way to enable it besides a restart.
I tried what is suggested in this post: [url]
Namely:
Code:
Put:
Code:
This doesn't seem to have any effect
I also tried the Broadcom STA driver. This was only better in that after resuming it tried to reconnect, but never managed to.

I'm hoping someone knows about this one... I'm running the latest CentOS 5.4 with kernel 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 (x86_64).When I boot the machine, it gets to the udev starting bit, hangs for like 5 minutes, then prints a message "Failed, will continue in the background." Then it boots OK after that.I tried booting again with the kernel option (from grub) "udevdebug", and what I saw when it tried again was a million messages saying it was waiting for "/sbin/pam_console_apply" to return, but I guess it wasn't returning... ;) Again, after 5 minutes, it gave up and finished booting. Now, this host is an LDAP client.
I figured that may have something to do with it as it is likely that pam_console_apply tries to make an LDAP lookup, which is wrong, because networking hasn't even started yet. If I disable LDAP (by removing ldap lookups in nsswitch.conf), I get no pam_console_apply errors from udev and it boots quickly. But that's a bummer, I need LDAP on this box, and I don't want my boot time to be 7-8 minutes. ;)Presumably before, when LDAP was enabled and it waited 5 minutes and then notified me that it will "continue in the background", that it was eventually successful after networking started. LDAP otherwise works fine on this box, just like all the other servers we have. This is new behavior, I've not seen it with CentOS 5.3 and below. Has anyone seen this? Any hints on what I can do to avoid it? It seems like a pam bug or something, but I don't know for sure.

I changed my motherboard battery last night, and now get "Read Error" on booting to Ubuntu, on dual boot system. This is the most frustrating thing in an otherwise great operating system. It is the second time I have encountered this issue (last time was a change of power supply). I fixed it last time after three days of re-loading Grub2 and playing around Grub 2 updates, etc. Fixed it eventually, but as usual, no idea of what eventuality fixed it. I think I found a web page buried deep in the 'net, which talked about device.map. Do you think I can find it again - not yet - day 2 searching for the answer... This is what the grub script tells us:

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS however when I attempt to boot the HDD I get the following error message
Read Error
Thats it nothing else, I am able to boot a USB installed version of Ubuntu 10.04LTS no proble. I can boot a Live CD of the same version no problem but when I installed it to the hard drive it just seems to fall over. I've tried adjusting the boot order, putting the HDD first and removing everything else but no joy. Im a linux n00b so no idea what to do next apart from go back to windows.

My laptop has a DVD/RW (It is both dash "-" and plus "+" able...whatever that really means.) drive. When I want to burn media,I grab a fresh disk from my bulk supplies and load it to the drive.Trouble #1 -- Software fails to recognize the fresh media as blank.I start the burn processing ... chug chug chug ... and something goes wrong.
Trouble #2 -- Software has some trouble writing the fresh media. I grab another fresh disk and repeat, often 2 or 3 times, before I get a successful burn. Can someone tell me why I have so much trouble with getting a media burn without all of the retry activities? How do I discover exactly what is going wrong? I don't find logs or similar that explain the troubles. I use both K3B (my fave) and Brasero.

I'm moving a few computers around and recently installed via USB drive 10.04LTS onto a machine (Dell Vostro 220 with 1TB hard drive) that previously had mythbuntu and Vista dual booting. I'm still dual booting to Vista.Since installing 10.04 I've been getting an error in the boot that drops me to a shell from grub. After working my way into the painfully slow system. I get this with update-grub:
Code:
