Slackware :: Start Program When Fluxbox Starts?

Apr 25, 2010

I use NetworkManager to handle my net connections and it's applet that allows me to control everything from the gui is called nm-applet. I was able to edit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.fluxbox so that nm-applet starts when fluxbox does and away I go. From runlevel 3 that is.

On my laptop I like to boot into runlevel 4 for various reasons. When I start a fluxbox session from runlevel 4 this doesn't happen. What file do I have to edit to get this to start from runlevel 4?

Ubuntu :: Get MySQL Daemon To Start When The Machine Starts Up?

Mar 17, 2010

I'm trying to get mySQL Daemon to start when the machine starts up (and it requires root privileges to run). The command to startup would be

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/mysql start however that would prompt for a password, and that would not be very well possible now would it? Now, if i try to start it up without being root, it will not start. So this is my problem, maybe someone out there would know a bit more about this than me.

CentOS 5 :: Install DVD Starts And Then Kernel Panics

Apr 29, 2009

I'm trying to use and old Dell Dimension 2350 workstation with 1GB of RAM and a 200GB drive as a home server. I boot the CentOS 5.3 install DVD, get to the splash screen and hit ENTER to start the install. The install routine starts and then kernel panics with a very long trace I can't make sense of. I've used the DVD for other installs so I know the media is good. Are there any known quirks to installing linux on a Dimension 2350? Maybe some kernel line parameters like no acpi?? As a test, I took an Ubuntu server cd, and the install actually completed but on reboot it kernel panicked with a similar long trace error. Obviously this is most likely a hardware issue.

Debian Configuration :: X No Longer Starts After Kernel Upgrade / Fix It?

Jan 31, 2010

I have a problem. I'm using the latest Debian stable, Lenny. I am trying to get my usb wifi card working.
The Debian wiki advised me to upgrade my kernel to 2.6.30 using backports, because the drivers for my wifi chip are supposedly in the newer kernel.

So thats what I did. The install went fine. However, after rebooting the computer hangs when it is starting gdm. Only the desktop background appears with some fuzzy stripe over it, the mouse doesn't respond. Pressing ctrl+alt+f1 does nothing. I can only restart with ctrl+alt+del.

I can still use the computer with the old kernel. No problems there. I tryed disabling GDM and rebooting again with the new kernel. It boots up and works fine on command line. However when I type startx it hangs, just like before.

I'm not an expert, but I'm suspecting there might be problems with the graphic drivers in the new kernel.
When I installed lenny at first, X started fine. However 3d acceleration was not functioning. I got help from IRC, I had to install some package to enable direct rendering. Don't remember which one anymore.

Here's what lspci gives for VGA:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS

EDIT This question is resolved by using:

$ rec -t wav - silence 1 0.1 3% -1 1.0 3% | lame - >record1.mp3

Ubuntu :: How Does Know Where A Program Is Installed

Jun 29, 2010

I've just been playing with the whereis command. For a program installed with synaptic package manager or comes preinstalled, whereis finds the path to the program. These programs in applications menu or startup applications don't need directory information, somehow linux must have them in some kind of a directory or something. For a program extracted from a .bz file, linux has no idea where the program is and I must give directory information. So how does linux find programs that are installed normally? It can't just search through files, that would seem to be slow. Is there a table or directory where program location is stored?

Ubuntu :: Can't Find Installed Program / Where To Get That?

Dec 22, 2010

Toshiba Satellite laptop, Ubuntu 10.04lts
I installed qcad earlier today, using Software Center. Qcad didn't show up anywhere in the Applications dropdown menu. When I was running 9.04, it showed up in the Graphics sub-menu, but it's nowhere. Rebooted, nothing. It shows up as installed in the Synaptic Package Manager, but I went ahead and removed and installed it again, rebooting between each operation. (sigh) Still nothing. Now, I'm sure it's in here, but I can't find it. So, I have three questions:
1. How do I start it (or any program) using command line?
2. How do I find it using my Gnome gui, and put it in the applications menu
and
3. Generally, is there a guide that will explain what I'm looking at when I open my File System directory?

Is it possible to run a program installed on a remote Ubuntu PC on the local PC? What I'm talking about is different from simply sending the GUI over the network (like X tunelling). I want the program to use the processor of the local machine. Is this possible?
(Here's an example. PC 1 has a fast processor. PC2 has gimp installed on it but has a slow processor. Can PC2 make GIMP run on PC1's processor over the network?)
