after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.
1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.
2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??
3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?
I made a kernel module package for opensuse 11.2, kernel 2.6.31-12 (latest update at time of writing). It supports opengl (glxgears has 2000 frames in 5 s), 2D is faster than by using vesa only. But compiz/kwin effects dont work. Open Arena works but is not as fast as under windows xp. I think its a xorg.conf issue.
Feel stuck between Debian and BSD worlds - not sure where to turn.
Running GNU/kFreeBSD debian 8.1-1-amd64 and base system working. Can not get X or xrandr to co-operate and use proper resolution of 1680x1050. I believe the basis of this is that it using the VESA drivers and instead should be using the INTEL drivers.
I have no 'pkg_add' for ports, plus obviously no Debian repos will help for this .... unless there are some specific kFreeBSD repos I dont know about? I can post more details on the system, but am hoping that there are other options besides compiling. I can do that if need be, but not even sure which one to use. Will these work on this system? I had to send my laptop back for repairs, so I have an older Dell 1720 laptop that I threw the Hard Drive into, similar specs, just the wireless card is different. So what i need to do is somehow activate the driver for the Intel 3945 wireless card in this dell laptop.
So I decided that I would swap over to Slackware on my HP dv2000 notebook as Linux mint wasn't encouraging me to use the command line too much and I decided to get thrown in the deep end with the scripting side of things.
Basically I can't work out how to install WCID off the Slackware DVD, I have gotten as far as extracting it (extracted to /home/ but I am unsure how to execute it, I have read the install docs and can't make much sense of it, could someone possibly help out and pass on the code to install.
Having trouble with video and windows/links/applications etc on 10.10, just came from windows 7 with everything fine. had 10.04 on my desktop with nvidia card, was easy to get that driver installed, but intel i cant find the correct information. on a laptop, compaq presario cq56. can anyone help out?
[URL] I just updated and then saw this news , whats the solution for me, I either want to go beta or downgrade, If i try to boot to previous kernel, boot hangs in graphic mode, I cant start X and gdm . How to install kmod with beta drivers? Or whats the solution, nvidia ver: 195.36.08
I know i know, some will say "eww Proprietary Drivers" but hey, ubunt is all about having more control of the OS. Is there an easy way to install Proprietary Drivers thats not through the hardware drivers option on system?
I have a new dell inspiron 1545 since i am facing problems with vista i wanted to work with linux operating system (fedora 9). I want to install the video drivers and sound drivers for my laptop..When i installed fedora 9 my screen resolution was 1366x768 but suddenly now my resolution is 1024x768. I tried to change the resolution but I am unable to find my laptop resolution. What could be the problem
Here I can see my video card and sound card.. I want to install the drivers for my cards
i'm a true newb with ubuntu. I've tried to find online how to get my graphics card up and running but all the places i check are way over my head. I've been a windows guy forever. Basically the graphics work on my laptop but won't do anything 3d right now. This makes me think i'm not using a correct driver. I've got no clue where to dl the from the ubuntu interface or what to do.
A recent update made my intel 830 unusable with kernel modesetting enabled, so I disabled it. However, I get "No kernel modesetting driver detected" errors when I start X with the intel driver. Is there a way to make the intel driver not require KMS?
I have a new netbook, a Lenovo Z360 and everything except one thing works "out-of-the-box". The one thing is the brightness control. I think it's the same bug like in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/538256 But I don't get anything in dmesg, it's just not working. setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=?? don't work, too. nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor don't work, too. I'm using Fedora 14 with KDE, 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686 and the intel drivers. Maybe somebody knows a workaround, usually brightness control works very well in the newer distributions. I had like 4 notebooks all with Fedora installed and brightness works, especially with the open source intel drivers I didn't expect any difficulties.
I'm getting a Dell XPS laptop soon and it comes with Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 and I was wondering if anyone else has this chipset and how well supported it is under Fedora or Linux in general.
I installed Maverick earlier today on a Dell XPS M1210, and everything works beautifully, except for one thing: the wireless card. It is an Intel 3945ABG wireless card, and I've tried searching around and have found nothing,
I am totally new to Ubuntu but have been tinkering for a week now. Can't say I have figured a thing out, thank God for Google, Linux is just not for the novice user. I guess thats where Windows comes in but I really like the stability of Linux and the fact it is Open Source and free. Wish I was a cool programmer or someone who has worked with the OS for a while, that would make things a lot easier. Where can I study up and get a little more educated about what I am doing? Anyway hopefully someone can answer the driver question. Lastly is there anyway to get Hardware Acceleration if using an Intel i5 system?
need to upgrade my intel graphics drivers for Compiz Fusion (3d desktop effects) suse linux 11.1 kernel:- 2.6.27.7-9-pae my hardware configuration is as follows intel dg41rq motherboard 2gb kingston ram intel dual core cpu 2.5 ghz current graphics drivers:- 4 series chipset integrated graphics controllers
How is OpenGL support (specifically OpenGL 3.x) in the different video card drivers available for Linux?Assuming that the hardware supported it well, would the drivers be an issue?
I need to install the latest drivers for my Nvidia card. I have the Quadro FX 1800.I don't think the Nvidia One click installation will work with this card.I downloaded the drivers from Nvidia and tried to install them but their directions are very confusing. It says "exit x windows" and "restart in init 3". I don't know what that means. Can someone tell me step-by-step how to compile and install the nvidia drivers?I have opensuse 11.2 64-bit clean install with all the defaults, and the Quadro FX 1800.
I'm tying to install either 11.2 or 11.3 for a friend & he has an ATI Xpress200 card. Is this a legacy driver? would the repo way work? My experience is Nvidia not ATI.
I am not certain of the cause (it may have been after I updated my ATI video drivers, or instructed my system to use a dual-head configuration, which in hindsight was perfectly dumb) but regardless of the reason--now when I "startx" my monitor freezes with a few stray motionless pixels. Nothing I've done helps: tried "sax2 -r -m 0=fglrx"; tried "aticonfig --initial"; tried to revert to an earlier xorg.conf; but I don't really know what I'm doing, so I hope someone who far surpasses my knowledge of SuSE on the command line can help me out.

I am have been noticing nearly 100% Usage by the NTFS driver. According to top the "mount.ntfs-3g" use up to 100% when I am accessing NTFS partitions (one 1 core I believe). My CPU is reasonably fast Intel E8400 3.0 ghz. I find it horrible that its stuck at nearly 100% just because I decide to heavy access the NTFS file systems.
I have been google online and have seen dozens of similar complaints. Most people haven't found a real solution. Is there really any good solution for this?
When I was running Windows XP, I never noticed anywhere near 100% usage when access the Hard drive heavily. Is the Linux NTFS drives just very bad in performance compared to the native Windows drives?
I've installed my the ATI drivers as per this link: SDB:ATI drivers - openSUSEHowever when trying to reboot on normal mode the OS opens only tty1 (terminal 1?), you know, the one with green theme background. Fortunately I was able to reboot and log with failsafe. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it?
Is there a way to determine which devices (by mfr, model, whatever) are supported by the drivers included in the 11.4 DVD? I'm sure this is a naive question,
