I'm wanting to update my existing 1GB Kinsgston 240 pin DIMM memory to 2GB or more. Can I keep my existing IGB and add another from a different manufacture? Will they match or should I just get new memory? What is available is DDR3 and DDR2. Guess what I'm asking is I have two memory slots total one will have the existing 1GB and I want to add at least 1GB more, does the DDR3 or DDR2 matter? Or is it all about the 240 pin config?

This is really not a Linux or SuSE question. However, the folks on this forum are polite and knowledgeable, so I will give it a try.In the process putting together a new computer.About 99% confident in the following:otherboard: ASUS Crosshair IV FormulaCPU: AMD Phemon II X4 955Graphics card: Gigabyte GV-R685D5RAM: Unknown. ASUS, as well as several other motherboard suppliers, have not approved of any 1x4GB DDR3 RAMS. Has anyone had success with getting a 1x4GB DDR3 RAM to work on the ASUS Crosshair IV motherboard?

I had this card on Ubuntu 10.10 and Mint 10 and with the video card driver installed, all movies where playing like I had a video card with 1 MB. When I was using the os generic video card movies played more better than with the video card driver enabled, but with the generic driver I did not had any graphic effects. Will CentOS use proper the nvidia driver or not?The video card is made by Gigabyte but has the nvidia chipset.

I'm encountering a strange problem. I need to open and forward all UDP and TCP ports related to VoIPtelephony (5000:32000) in the Suse 11.1 server that's acting as router/firewall in our setup. The ports must redirect to a Asterisk server in the local network. (This server has the IP adress 192.168.0.3)I've opened ports in Yast (Firewall>Ports>Advanced) and putted in some masquerading rulesirewall>Masquerading):0/0,192.168.0.3,tcp,5000:31000,5000:310000/0,192.168.0.3,udp,5000:31000,5000:31000when I do a nmap localhost I get:Starting Nmap 4.75 at 2010-01-08 16:52 CETInteresting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):

I have just installed ubuntu 10 on a thinkpad t410. At first everything worked swimmingly, INCLUDING the wireless. After about five minutes, the wireless stopped working, in that it seemed to think it was still connected but pinging didn't work. I've now restarted several times, and each time I restart, the wireless works for about 1 minute, then stops working. If I try to disconnect and reconnect it will not reconnect (until I restart, that is).
iwconfig shows the correct ESSID and ifconfig shows an address, and "connection information" shows a varying percentage of connection.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04, and I recently have wanted to start changing some of my taskbar items around. The problem is, when I go to right-click on the taskbar, all I can see are the "Help" and "About" menu options. No preferences, no options to get rid of a taskbar item, no options to add a taskbar item.

I've recently discovered a little problem with Firefox: if there are those multiple choice fields with arrows on the side on a webpage, I can click on the arrow but nothing shows up. Check the attached images to see what I mean, does anybody know where this comes from or how to get it to work properly again?

often we need to add attachments to things, like adding a picture to a gmail when composing or to add a picture to a document. When I try to do this, nautilus shows only folders. It shows all the folders I would expect to see but none of these folders actually contain documents. If I navigate using places and open folders of course all my files are there, I just cant see them when trying to insert a file. Why might that be? Does anyone know?
I notice the "select which types of file to show" pulldown is empty - whats happened?

While connecting over Xrdp, hitting the "D" key alone hides all my windows and shows the desktop. This is problematic since I often wish to type words containing at least one "D" in it. In case anyone else is having this problem, I've wrestled through it and offer this help.I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meercat and connecting via Xrdp. I only have this problem when connecting remotely.
APPARENT CAUSEI don't pretend to know for sure, but the problem appears to be that the remote connection is flubbing Metacity's "<Super>d" binding for the "show desktop" command. More precisely, the string "<Super>" doesn't appear to be functioning for me. If I change <Super> to <Ctrl>, I can use Ctrl + D to show desktop, and I can then type the letter D without it hiding every window from me.
Further evidence <Super> isn't working for me, if I change Metacity's "panel_run_dialog" global key binding from "<Alt>F2" to "<Super>F2" I bring up the run dialog by hitting F2 alone.
WORKAROUNDChange the system's "show desktop" keystroke. Here are the steps.
1) Alt+F2
2) gconf-editor
3) /->app->metacity->global_keybindings
4) Change the assigned keystroke for show_desktop from "<Super>d" to "<Ctrl>d" or "<Ctrl><Alt>d" or "disabled"
If someone finds this worthy of submitting a bug ticket, please let me know so I can follow it.

my first install was 10.04, and everything was working fine. Only last night, and this morning, when I tried logging into Ubuntu, I entered my username, password, but after it accepted it, it only showed my cursor and the login wallpaper. Sometimes it gets to my desktop wallpaper, but shows nothing else. I have a dual-boot with Vista, if that helps at all.

I attached a picture showing a 2.7GB swap partition in the program named Disk Utility. Also in the pic on the upper right is the program htop running and you see Swap is showing up as "Swp[ 0/0MB]". And in the middle right is Sytem Monitor showing no swap space being used and that the swap space size is 0 bytes. This all happened after resizing the partitions using gparted. I resized all the partitions. Part of what I did was increase the size of the swap partition from 512MB to 2.7GB. But, as you can see, after rebooting the system no longer is using the swap space. And it seems, according to the pic of System Monitor that there is no swap space. Is there a way to fix this so Ubuntu will use the swap space?

I restarted conky, but didn't use my start script I just typed "Conky" from the command line, when it came up it showed the default options. Along with that I noticed "evolution-data" and "evolution-exchange" would show up as processes. (and then disappear) I don't use evolution, I use Thunderbird instead. Why is this process running? I checked the startup applications and I don't see anything Evolution related.

I installed lm_sensors via Synapt & the Sensors Applet on the panel, but that applet shows me an invariable 40C for 2 temperatures - 'CPU' & 'temp1'.Now I know it can't read the CPU temperature (long story, the CPU fan is hard-wired to 6v & there is no temperature feedback...) but it should be able to find a couple of other useful temperatures. The same PC in XP uses Speedfan which indicates plausible temperatures for (I think) Case & Hard Drive. (Temp2 & HD0 in the attached)I wonder what I have failed to do & why I cannot see Case or HD temps in Ubuntu? In terminal, I ran sensors-detect which went OK until the last bit where it said:
"~$ /etc/init.d/module-init-tools start Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8) utility, e.g. service module-init-tools start...etc" I don't follow that, but I have checked that I have it87 in both /etc/modules & in lib/modules/.../hwmon
