Is there any way to list all installed drivers with hardware information like we have device manager in windows.
I have this card reader, it works perfectly on Win7, but when i try to put my xD card in it whilst on Linux, it wont read it, nothing shows up in nautilus nor on the desktop. If it's any use, it's an external, with a USB cable.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Creative SoundBlaster live SB0490 USB sound card. Alsamixer only shows a mic channel for this card although it has a line in. Is this because it is not supported or how it is meant to be? I have problems with no audio out on a program which directly accesses the card as hw:1 although it is actually using it and wonder if this is all related. Strangely I can play sound through the card using rythmbox.

on the mac there is a piece of software to change the system clock so it shows the stardate instead of the month, day and year. Is there something like that for Ubuntu? I think it would be pretty cool to have a star trek themed desktop
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have xfce on my machine, running lucid lynx. For some weird reason, I can't change my firefox home page. I've changed it to the same one time and again in preferences, but every time I open firefox, it shows all the files in my home directory, including hidden ones. I uncheck the "show hidden files box", change it again in "preferences", but it still does this. And the home page in "preferences" is set to the right page I want; firefox just won't go there when I start it up. I really don't want my home directory in plain view like that; how do I make firefox recognize my settings?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWell, i guess it is the graphic card:
I tried to watch a flash video on full screen; then the screen went black with some glitches and then my laptop suddenly shut down. I couldn't start opensuse back again, the screen goes black and freezes. I tried restarting in windows, and it freezes too. However, opensuse in failsafe mode works.
After that, i tried reinstalling opensuse. This time, i can start normally, but after a while, the screen shows some glitch (the updater applet looked wrong) and freezes. Windows isn't loading either, but opensuse failsafe mode is still working ok.
I guess it is a hardware problem (since windows also crashes). However, i would like some help to run "diagnostics" to my system.
My graphic card is a nvidia 8400 gs, and i am running opensuse 11.3
I was using the nvidia driver i found in opensuse-community (installed quite a long time ago); however, after i reinstalled, i was using the default driver. It is possible that my kernel was updated a couple of days ago (but i am not really sure of that)
Some time back using this computer a SucKit rootkit was found. Having dd urandomed the drive, flattened CMOS battery, flashed BIOS, run Knoppix live CD 6.1,using no flat pack battery (laptop), and memtested the RAM, I am still having problems with what I suspect is a javascript file that tries to reload the rootkit from? firmware. I suspect the firmware as everything else should have eradicated it??
Also it or a hacker via a backdoor then corrupts the drivers so devices malfunction. Windows security programs and rootkit detectors don't seem to pick it up. Fresh install of Windows or linux after the above still show this problem, though internet not used. The person who admitted rootkitting this machine is capable of writing java programs or using javascripts to do all this.
When viewed using Ubuntu 8.4 files and dates on a Windows partition appear normal both in file manager and terminal. However booting using Knoppix CD these files are all green, and I cannot change their permissions, even as root. ie: everything is green including text files etc. If I copy them to a linux partition, I can change their permissions and make them nonexecutable and nonwritable. Also on the Windows FAT32 partition the . directory has the date 1 Jan 1970.
If I disable any green files, I can shutdown and reboot cleanly. If I don't I start having problems shutting down [/usr/sbin/init ?] And always these follow a pattern:
Can't remember details as I have now corralled the beast but error messages relating to:
nfs-server
inet.d/statd
are the start of these.
In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.
My connection manager shows wired connections and shows wireless as being disabled. here is some terminal info getting wireless going?
Here is a bunch of things I have tried and the results.

nixon@nixon-desktop:~$ sudo ifdown wlan0

I'm encountering a strange problem. I need to open and forward all UDP and TCP ports related to VoIPtelephony (5000:32000) in the Suse 11.1 server that's acting as router/firewall in our setup. I am using a laptop with a built-in sound card, but have a higher quality USB sound card that I plug in to listen to music. The problem with this is that I have to go through the sound options to change the sound card every time I plug the USB card in. what i'm hoping to do is write a simple script to do the job so that I only have to click an icon on the desktop. does anyone know the commands to do this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Asus/Intel setup with integrated graphics that has been running Unity no problem for a while. I temporarily installed a separate NVidia card to do some hardware compatibility testing for another system that apparently couldn't hack it for Unity and forced it back to Classic. With the Nvidia card removed and going back to the integrated video setup I can't seem to get Unity running again. At the login I've toggled back and forth between Ubuntu (Unity) and Classic to no avail. Is there some way to reactivate it?

From this screen I can only ctrl+alt+del for reboot or physically turn off the pc.I think this is a driver issue but wouldnt debian just use a default gfx driver automatically in this situation so I would at least get to a console or desktop? View 1 Replies View RelatedI got it into my head to change the graphics card in my Ubuntu 10.04 media center. I removed my old ATI card and installed a new ASUS ENGT 430. I tried to uninstall the ATI drivers and associated software prior to this but obviously I didn't get it all. When I boot into X it takes me in under low graphics mode. I've tried rebuilding my xorg.conf. I've installed the driver from the ASUS site and nothing.
I decided to swap in my old ATI card and obviously I've not cleared all the ATI artifacts as the low graphics mode that machine first booted into was at the high resolution that I was running previously. I uninstalled all Nvidia software but now I'm not even able to get the old ATI software to work. Jockey sees the drivers after I install them through the Software Center but they're not really working. XBMC won't start for GL reasons.
What do I need to purge all graphics drivers and install the nVidia driver? I've got a feeling if I started from scratch I could get it to work but I seriously don't want to reinstall everything. I've worked hard to get my XBMC config just so and I don't want to lose everything

i left some pics, the 1st one is what i get when i run alsamixer, the 2nd is the options i got when i try to change the sound card, and the third is what i get with the card HDA SIS966 which is the one i'm trying to get as my default.
With a Netbook that runs Kubuntu 10.04 i have always stored by regular files on a SD card. For ease I have used symbolic links to save and retrive data from the card such as a Documents folder. After a power crash my SD card which has always been read/write has changed to read only. The links do not work and if I try to make a new link "Read-only file system" is the error.
I have tried chmod with the same error message. Device is owned by me not root. Saving to the device also returns the same error message.
I have looked at a couple of similar streams but neither has any final resolution.
changing the SD card back to read/write?

How can I set the network card to use the same ip address all the time?
