Ubuntu :: Grub Error 15 - Reinstalling WinXP - Umpteen Installations And It Keeps Crashing

Apr 8, 2010

My set up is internal hard drive Windows 7, external Ubuntu Karmic. The reason I have it this way, despite Linux being my main OS, is because my internal hard drive is 6 years old and half the capacity of my external new one. Have tried quite a few set ups with various Linux platforms, but have finally settled on above. As yet, I don't know Linux or Ubuntu all that well. Getting somewhere, but it's a steep learning curve.

Because of constant errors reinstalling WinXP - umpteen installations and it keeps crashing - the problems are with security updates and SP3 - I finally bit the bullet and intalled Win 7. I only need Windows for a few essential programs or I'd happily never look at it again, so it filled me with horror doing this, but I couldn't take the crashes any more. So, today, Win 7 installs just nicely. However, I can no longer boot my external Ubuntu hard drive. The error is, 'Grub loading stage 1.5... Grub loading please wait... Error 15'. I load up the live cd, but when I try to follow instructions given to other people with Error 15 (editing files, accessing root) I don't have permissions.

Ubuntu Servers :: Grub Error On Hardware Raid 1 / Default Root Device Shows That Prefix=(hd0,1)/grub?

Apr 13, 2011

I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1

array 2:
slot 2 & 3

during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Screen Goes Blank With Intel Motherboard - Not Even Grub Loader Shows Up

Jun 8, 2010

First time I am having issues with Centos.

I bought a Intel DQ45CB LGA Q45 Micro ATX Motherboard and I am installing the 64 bit version of centos.

The install of Centos goes just fine. However when I first try to boot up, after post is done, I get a blank screen. I do not even get on the Grub screen. No access to any of the ttys. No access to anything, files, folders. I only get a blkinking cursor, no command prompt, nothing.

This happened with Centos 5.2 and 5.3

Just for the hell of it, I installed XEN Xitrix and I have no issues like that.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu

Dec 16, 2010

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.

I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

And got this:

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.

Ubuntu :: Grub Shows More Two Different Ubuntu OS Entries?

Sep 29, 2010

This is my first post on the forums. Recently I decided to partition my computer to have dual boot into windows and ubuntu. Everything has been working fine but I have a very confusing doubt. When the Grub menu shows up during boot I can see the expected partitions for windows (the OS and a memory test utility installed by DELL) but also not one but two entries for Ubuntu that only differ in name (plus the corresponding recovery mode entry). One says Linux 2.6.32-24 and the other 2.6.32-25. Both of them seem to boot into the same place as far as I can tell when I try either of the entries. I went into the edit mode to see if I spotted any differences and got this:

recordfail
insmod ext2
set root= '(hd0,5)'
search --no-floppy--fs -vvid --set 166a9c40-077a-4dda-83f9-83755a73ca3f

[Code]...

There's no problem as is, just that boot menu looks kind of crowded and I'm wondering if I can delete any of the ubuntu entries without killing the computer's boot sequence. Also, if anyone can tell me how the duplication came about I'll also be very grateful so I don't do it again. The only thing I've actually done by myself through the command line so far was an attempt to update the ALSA mixer that I cancelled once the download had started.

Ubuntu :: How To Pause The Installations/updates

Feb 1, 2010

Is there a way to pause installations/updates? If there is not, would it be possible to implement that?It seems these days that installations through synaptic seem to take ages to download files. While downloading the files, ubuntu will not let you run any other package manager. So if I am updating my system or installing several programs through synaptic, I am unable to install anything else. For example a deb file ive downloaded, or i would like to install a single program while all these other files download.

I can understand not being able to install multiple things at once, but why is it not possible to install things while it downloads the files? Sometimes it days several hours/days to download the files.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Grub2 Not Detecting Win 7 Installations

Mar 10, 2010

I have Ubuntu 9.10 and Win7 both installed on my desktop. I use Windows for gaming (when I actually have the chance...) Anyway, for some reason update-grub is not detecting my Win7 installation, neither is os-prober. I attempted to add a custom Grub2 entry to point to Windows 7, however, when I select it from Grub, I simply get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper-left, after waiting 20 minutes, Windows still hadn't loaded.

Here are hopefully all the relevant files:
sudo fdisk -l

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Installations On Sony Vaio CW

Jun 9, 2010

I've been trying to install Ubuntu 64bit on Sony Vaio CW and the Screen is 14 inch when I boot from CD it seems to work normal but after i select "Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" then the screen goes black like nothing happening but the CD runs for while then stop. Again I reboot to try again this time I press F6 then select "nomodeset" and it boots fine I was happy though, after installation success when I boot again WTF it goes black again and then I reboot and press "E" during the options that showing to select OS then I remove "Quit Splash".

I guess then I add "nomodeset" and control+X to boot, it works fine. So when I log in and of course I activate the Nvidia Graphic Driver then I reboot and WTF again the screen was out sync or something like the the screen didn't show properly. The Application menu normally is on the upper left of the screen but this time it was on the center of screen and the Shut down button came to the left side and i have to move the mouse cursor to the right and then it would appear on the left just like the resolution is to big for the screen.
