after messing around with plymouth manager to try and get a decent boot screen(for the 3 weeks i've had 10.10 installed, it's just been a plain text bootup) it seemed to have removed my main boot option without recovery. i'm still able to boot into recovery and pull up my graphical environment but i can't seem to figure out how to get my normal boot option back.
View 9 RepliesI have a dual boot setup with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Lately Windows 7 has been causing me all kinds of grief and I decided that it would be better to just restore it back to factory settings. I have a Windows 7 recovery partition (hidden) that I can see from Ubuntu, however Grub2 does not detect it. It only has two identical Windows entries that take me into Windows (though in /boot/grub/grub.cfg they point to hd0,msdos1 and hd0,msdos2 respectively).
I have searched far and wide on the Internet on how to gain access to this recovery partition to no avail. I even found a link from Lenovo's website that details how to do this in the old version of Grub, though it doesn't work in Grub2.

I have already backed up all my data, so I can nuke the whole disk if that's what it takes, but I don't actually have a Windows Recovery CD, only the hidden partition which I can't seem to boot into.
I also saw some posts where people were having trouble disabling the recovery partitions from appearing in the Grub menu, their answers often consisted of people telling them that it's not possible to disable the recovery partition from appearing without hiding the main Windows Install, oh the irony!
As a big supporter of Ubuntu, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 on my mums laptop i decided to also install it on my sisters Acer Aspire one netbook.
The specific netbook had pre-installed Win7 starter. Everything went really smooth with the installation with ubuntu 10.10, Grub menu was also loading pretty well but when i chose to load on windows it loads the recovery partition of the hard drive.
The issue is that the netbook, like most netbooks and laptops, has a hidden partition which is used to recover Windows on the system. My Grub2 loader added this partition as an option to load windows with result me not be able to boot on windows ...well i do can load but it loads the recovery of windows.
I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04. Since I did that I have had a problem with GRUB: I cannot see the Recovery Mode menu - at least not anything intelligible.
I can see the normal first GRUB menu with all installed operating systems, recovery modes, and MEMTEST, etc, but cannot see the Recovery Mode menu. What I do notice (if I select it) are some fuzzy lines at the top of the screen. I also notice the Ubuntu splash screen does not appear any more either.
Clearly it seems there is a resolution issue. I have a 1440 x 900 monitor and the current version NVIDIA driver.
This happened some time ago on previous Ubuntu releases, but was not an issue when I originally installed 10.04.
Attempted Fix:I installed the StartUp-Manager and have tried all the resolution combinations with no success. Some yield bigger more centrally displayed fuzzy lines, but still nothing legible.
Although this isn't "life-threatening" I'm just a bit worried that I might need the Recovery Menu and not be able to use it.
I'm dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 7. On my 7 partition I have Paragon Backup and Recovery Suite installed. This program has a boot screen, "press F6 to enter recovery console." Well, I have a boot disk for that console, rendering the boot screen useless to me. In addition to that, it replaces Grub2, so every time I want to boot Ubuntu I have to boot the livecd and reinstall grub. Is there any way to remove this boot screen?
View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter a lot of updates yesterday I have found that Lucid will no longer boot, I just get a blank screen that has a cursor flashing in the top left corner. I can't boot into recovery mode to see what the issue(s) might be because I took that option out when I ran update-grub.My question is this, is there a way to run update-grub -either from a live-cd or grub-rescue mode- that would put the recovery boot option back in? I have already edited the /etc/default/grub file to comment out the field.

I set up Burg, to well, replace Grub2 in favour of a more attractive interface and so far so good. I know that I can hide the older Ubuntu kernels/recovery slots by pressing the 'F'key. However, the Windows recovery partition still shows up. So it looks like this:

Basically, how can I hide the Windows Recovery partition? If I ever do need to use it, I can access it alternatively by pressing F4 at boot.

My "normal" linux kernels disappeared. When I want to boot linux I use a recovery kernel, then I simply hit "resume" in the process, do the textual login and than use the command "startx" to start the system. However i'm getting no Plymouth and no normal boot. I have already tried to fix grub recreating the linux kernels, but they just don't show.
i am dual booting windows 7 and ubuntu 10.4 lucid, i just reinstalled the Grub2 after my windows erased it, and now it boots into grub2 but i can only boot into my windows7 loader, ubuntu is not even listed as an option for me to boot into its just a bow with the win7 loader. How can i get the grub2 to load ubuntu back again? i followed the guide on this site to reinstall the Grub2 and set up the dual boot. View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently (for about the third time) HAD to re-install Windows 7. It just wouldn't boot and unfortunately I have some proprietary software that I need to use. Anyway, this is the first time I've had to do so since installing Lucid (64bit, fresh install). My problem now is, when I re-installed Grub2 (using the same methods that have previously worked flawlessly) to recover it after re-installing windows, only windows shows up in the grub menu, showing options to boot to Windows on sda1 and another to boot to Windows on sda2.
I grabed a "boot info script" from Rubi1200 and this is what I got..

I have two hard drives - (1) 80GB (2) 500GB: the 1st HD has 3 partitions (in that order) - Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 & Swap. the 2nd HD is for storage only, and has 2 partitions.
I did the following - I installed Windows 7 on the first partition of the 1st HD, it booted just fine. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the second partition of the 1st HD.
Windows 7 shows in the GRUB menu alongside with Ubuntu. Ubuntu boots just fine, but when I select Windows it simply restarts the computer and the GRUB menu shows again.

boot up in to chameleon, lists only Mac OS X as a boot option. Reboot, load Ubuntu 10.4 install cd, get to a terminal, mount /dev/sda3 /mnt grub-install --force --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda3
reboot, let chameleon come up, it sees both Mac OS X & Ubuntu partitions and I can boot to either or happily, now here is the problem... If I select linux and boot in to linux from chameleon, i am brought to the grub menu, where i can select the first choice which is normal ubuntu 10.4 and every thing is great... until I reboot and my linux partition no longer shows up in chameleon, as if tthe act of booting in to grub is changing something / deleting itself from the partition? and I have to do the whole thing over again. SO, not having to even go in to OS X, I'm not sure thats really the concerns more as I'm doing something wrong with grub.
So my grub menu is showing several selections for each of my OS's. In Ubuntu, my OS of choice for now, how can I access the grub and edit it.
I would like to know the steps for console, but also I hope somebody can show me how to use Super Grub to do it.
I switched over from Ubuntu because I realized Ubuntu sucks now (lol), but anyways... Now I'm trying to get Grub2 to boot up properly, but this "xputs" error pops up and drops me to the recovery prompt. I tried the grub-install dev/sda and all it did was recognize my Windows 7 OS (as Vista) and added it to the bootloader list and didn't fix the "xputs" issue.
I heard that doing a chroot is the most effective solution. Forgive me, but I don't know what "chroot" means or how effective it is. I can specify more information about where the OS is if needed. I have the boot flag set to the Debian OS at the hd(0,5) or sda5 I think, and Windows is at sda1 (I think). I just want to make sure I can fix this without damaging Windows, and I'll try to get more information.
Right now, I can only get into Windows or Debian with UBCD and Grub2 Super Disk and I know that sometimes Parted Magic could orderly mount the disks differently, so I don't know if it was sdaX or sdbX, but probably sdaX. I'll check again.
I've got a, as it seems to me, strange problem.I've inadvertently deleted my user from the group admin so I'm in the same situation of a lot of other users (read a lot of messages about it).My problem is that when restarted in recovery mode there is no way I can choose the 'drop to the root shell' or similar in the menu.The menu appears for a second and then I've got an empty screen. If I press a key I've been requested for a username and password that of course is not what I need.

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.

Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.
I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes).So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. I have just installed ubuntu 10 on a thinkpad t410. At first everything worked swimmingly, INCLUDING the wireless. After about five minutes, the wireless stopped working, in that it seemed to think it was still connected but pinging didn't work. I've now restarted several times, and each time I restart, the wireless works for about 1 minute, then stops working. If I try to disconnect and reconnect it will not reconnect (until I restart, that is).
iwconfig shows the correct ESSID and ifconfig shows an address, and "connection information" shows a varying percentage of connection.

View 2 Replies View Relatedok so i have been haviung the same problem for a while now and it is starting to **** me off, with every distribution of ubuntu i am getting thuis stupid message when i log in it is ionoly every once i a while that i get it but saince i have upgraded to 220.04 cannot fix it. i could fix it befor pretty easily, the probklem is when i get t o the login screen i get this generic login menu whne i attept to login i get this message somethiung like power management is not installed correctly. like i said b4 it was easy to fix, all i would do is to go to the ubuntu recovery thing, which is apparently not available ion 10.04 it does not evn give me a choice which to boot how do i get to recover mode in ubuntu 10.04?

But with ubuntu installed on it's own, grub doesn't show up, which can be a bit of a problem as I want to be able to go into the recovery system and try and trouble shoot my ubuntu.
I've looked at startup manager and it seems to be on, for the most part but I'm sure i'm missing something I could probably do in terminal to get this to work, I'm using ubuntu 10.10 is there anything I need to do in terminal to show up grub?

Upgrading over the weekend, but it failed, and suggested running dpkg-reconfigure -a
I couldn't launch any terminal/xterm windows, and couldn't login via ssh (kicked me out with xmalloc failure) or through a virtual console (showed garbled characters)
So I had to reboot.
Now the boot process -- I've tried recovery mode for all othe kernels I've got installed, but all fail in the same way:
