Jun 3, 2011
I have a HP-DV7i Laptop or the (HP Pavilion dv7t-4100 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook PC) they call it.....
With the lintel i7 quad core 720.. It has 8 gigs of RAM and I am using a Corsair F120 SSD for boot and a 320gig for back up, and the video card has 1gig of RAM...
o ya and I am running VM BOX with windows 7 (But have deleted it for now, and reinstalled ubuntu 10.4)
Problem: The system says I only have 3 gigs of RAM ??? When in fact I have 8 gigs, And it runs HOT! like it is over working itself.... Do I need some HP Linux based drivers of something?

my isp is putting a max bandwidth in my area and I need to monitor my downloads and uploads per month. Is there anything that has a gui that is easy to set up and just shows the amount of data downloaded and uploaded per month. Also if possible to do a pop up if you set a maximum bandwidth amount.

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and I noticed that the top panel shows an incorrect date. The time is ok, but there are some problems with the date. It keeps changing (maybe a day every 5 min) and at the moment i'm writing this message, it shows 42 July (I'm serious, look at the screenshoot I made). If I choose date and time option from the System>Administration, I can see the correct date there. I tried to change it from there, but the top panel doesn't change. Could anyone give me a hand?

The notification area in the panel comes up each time I boot with Irl as the geographical location. If I click this it changes to GBr (which is correct). Is there any way of stopping the Irl display, or at least make GBr the default at boot time?

I'm encountering a strange problem. I need to open and forward all UDP and TCP ports related to VoIPtelephony (5000:32000) in the Suse 11.1 server that's acting as router/firewall in our setup. The ports must redirect to a Asterisk server in the local network. What is the minimum amount of processes that can be run and still keeping stable? I have what looks like over 100 processes running and my computer is lagging pretty bad. Attached is an output of
Code:
ps -A
And it comes and goes with the cpu usage. cpu1 will run at like 9 or 10 percent idle while cpu2 will run at 100 percent all the time. I am not sure whats going on. But id hate to have to start from scratch again begins I just got it set up the way i want it. And the network activity keeps having spikes when I am not online. I've scanned with multiple port scanners and nothing seems out of the norm.

I'm just wondering because I'm going to to test out just how many partitions I can make and mount on GPT. Is there a theoretical limit on the amount of partitions or mounts allowed? I was thinking there would be depending on if you were running i386 or x86_64 because both can only handle up to a certain interger.

I tried to install Portable VirtualBox using wine and even though I installed it on my /host/ folder (with 19 gb free) it downloaded some massive file on my Wubi installation (with 60 mb free) and now I am down to 3 mb left on Wubi and I can't find the massive file that it downloaded. Tried using the disk usage analyzer but nothing came up. Windows is unbootable so I can't use it.
Before this, Ubuntu would constantly decrease the amount of disk space I had free for no reason as well. It would jump from 120 mb one day to 50 mb.I moved my documents to my Windows folders but the disk space only stayed at 100 for another day or so before it went down again. apt-get auto/clean, localepurge, and deborphan are completely useless and there's something else going on behind the scenes here that I don't know about.Using Ubuntu Jaunty.

Most nights I fall asleep watching tv or movies. I want the computer to go to sleep after I do. Under Power Management Properties I have "put computer to sleep when inactive for 1:00" yes - to " spin down hard disks" and "put display to sleep when inactive for 1:00"
I'd say 65% of the time I wake up and the computer is running, not suspended, and 45% of the time the monitor is still on. Over the past 8 months or so I have been trying different media players. I tend to have the same problem of the computer not sleeping with all of them. (Banshee, Miro, xbmc, boxee, vlc, totem, )
1. Is there a process I can look for that may be running some of the time that would hinder the suspend function?
2. Is there a simple script I can write for "suspend in 90 minutes"
3. I think I remember seeing way to do this from the CLI with pm-suspend, yeah?
Edit- I found this http://bit.ly/hpThVM
Things I tested that didn't work
~$ sudo echo pm-suspend | at 12:27
~$ sudo sleep 30s

I was wondering if there was a Windows or Ubuntu way to limit the amount of data that is able to be sent over the internet between certain times, eg. Between the times of 7am and 7pm can only download 300 MB from the web, when this limit is reached the web is either disconnected or slowed down.

In gparted I have the following stats for my /home drive
size: 824 gb
used 75.51 gb
unused 748.59 gb
Now when I view this in nautilus it shows something else: remaining free space as 709 gb. My question is what happened to the 40gbs? the 75.51gb are my files, but where did the 40gbs go to? Because 709 (total remaining) + 75 (my files) + 40 (mysteriously lost gbs) = 824gb. When I first made the partiton, it was a 824gb partition and ubuntu had automatically at that point reserved about 40gb for something. Does anyone know why Ubuntu reserved this space?

I have a 500GB internal SATA and a 1TB external and i can't seem to determine what my free/available disk space amount is on my internal HD. External tells me when i right click on the drive...however, that doesn't work on the internal. I've tried using the Disk Utility app, but I can't seem to get that same data/read-out. Is there (preferable) CLI command that can be used to do this -specifically, by drive?

I examined the problem, and determined that a huge amount of disk space is being taken up by files in /var/log/ The following files:
Code:
/var/log/messages.1
/var/log/kern.log.1
/var/log/daemon.log.1
/var/log/messages
/var/log/kern.log
/var/log/daemon.log
/var/log/syslog
are all over 1 GB in size. The largest is 18 GB. Together, they total 48.3 GB. I restarted the system, forcing a fsck.

I've read the documentation but can't figure it out. Let's say that I want to write a shell script which will rename every .jpg file in a folder to prepend "Linux_" to it.Challenge #1: how do I create a loop which is contingent on the amount of files in that folder Challenge #2: how do I know that file's respective name? I think it should look like this:
Loop /home/administrator/Images/*.jpg
(
Mv THATFILENAME Linux_THATFILENAME
)

After a terrible problem I had with x-server, I decided to opt for a clean install. So, naturally I poped in the 10.10 LiveCD (from Canonical), deleted the Ubuntu Partiton (ext4) and swap, and entered the installer. I have a 40gb Vista partition, 90gb media partition, and 20gb unallocated free space. Once I get to allocate drive space in the installation, I get three options - Install alongside other operating systems, erase and use the entire disk, or specify partitions manually. If I click install alongside other operation systems, it tries to take space away from my media partition to install ubuntu. I'm not too advanced with Ubuntu, so I don't think I'm going to specify my own. I don't know how much to give swap etc, etc, etc. What ever happened to use the largest amount of continuous free space? I have 20gb free I would love ubuntu to use.

My problem is I installed Zone Minder for camera security and I'm testing it on my laptop with the built in webcam and everything seems to work perfectly except when I try to view the live feed from the camera, it's just a black box. No video.
I checked this website and it's exactly the problem I'm having with a fix for it but his fix doesn't work. He says to type:
Code:
user@ubuntu:~$ sudo echo "256000000" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
user@ubuntu:~$ sudo service apache2 restart
user@ubuntu:~$ sudo service zoneminder restart
But when I do the first line, I get this:
Code:
deemar@Clementine:~$ sudo echo "256000000" > /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax
bash: /proc/sys/kernel/shmmax: Permission denied
