View 3 Replies View Relatedi just installed the Debian on my old laptop. The install went fine but after that, the GRUB menu loads and freezes. I simply can't do anything. I checked menu.lst and the timeout is set to 5 but still nothing happens. It won't load. I then tried to load with the "super GRUB disk"but the same problem - as soon as it loads from the CD, it freezes and I can't do anything. Before I had Xubuntu on the same laptop but there was no Grub menu. It simply loaded. There's only 1 OS on the laptop /currently Debian/ - no windows, no other Linux.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been using ubuntu wel a long time now and I know my way around in linux but I recently updated my laptop from ubuntu 10.04 to ubuntu 10.10 all went fine until I had to restart my laptop. I got a purple screen (loading screen) with 4 dots and a oldskool like font which said: Ubuntu 10.10 Right after that the screen goes purple and its like the system halts I hear no login sound etc just a purple screen. So I did a clean install from the 10.10 live cd which booted perfectly fine and the system was also useable like before. But when I installed the system and rebooted it again no problems.
But when I tried to install the proprietary nvidia driver (the recommended one) I got the same problem again the purple screen. After searching a while on the internet I only found posts which had the problem with ATI cards but my laptop is fitted with a Nvidia Geforce 9300 M card. So I tried several things like removing the xorg.conf (read it somewhere) which ofcourse did not work, and booting in graphics fail safe mode which worked. So the point is in 10.04 and 9.10 I CAN use my video card drivers but not in 10.10 is there a solution to this problem? I am talking about the 32 bit version of ubuntu and here's my system hardware profile:

I'm trying to install ubuntu from a disk I got with a Ubuntu manual magazine, but once I choose the install option, the logo glows for a couple minutes then freezes and nothing happens. The same happens for running it without installation. Does anyone know what I should do? I'm currently downloading it onto a USB stick to attempt to boot it from that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter an automatic upgrade on Saturday and Sunday. Now during booting, the screen is black until eventually the desktop appears. Well, almost black-- early on there is a quick flash in the top left corner of the screen, I think it says "acpid client 0.0 disconnected".The desktop comes up and seems to work just fine.
What is it that puts the "Ubuntu" and Five Red Dots on the screen, is it grub2, or is it gdm, or X, or is it some other "in between" process? (Sometimes in the past I have gotten the text-only "Ubuntu 10.10" instead of the graphic 5 dots. At that time I was thinking it was something about grub2 not dealing with my monitor resolution properly. But I'm not so sure)
I made the fatal mistake of hibernating on my Lenovo T61. Ubuntu wouldn't wake up after that, I tried pressing all kinds of key combinations and nothing. So I did a hard shut down and now Ubuntu won't start. On the grub menu I chose Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.35-7 normal mode and it just shows the screen that says "Ubuntu 10.10" and the four dots underneath indicating loading.
So I tried recovery mode and it stops at:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda5: clean, 688078/4988928 files, 15488354/19939072 blocks
I also tried unplugging the laptop and removing the battery and putting it back in and plugging and restarting. Nothing changed. Then I tried restarting without the battery in and now the normal mode just shows a black screen and a flashing cursor. I also have the USB stick I created to install Ubuntu, which worked back then, but now, it won't start from the stick, I checked the Bios options and the USB is the first boot device, I really don't know how else I can make it start from the USB.
Today, I turn on my computer, and put a CD, as then I click the install, then waiting like Dot dot loading, what's does mean?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I try booting my computer under Ubuntu, it freezes whenever it gets to the part of the purple loading screen (with the Ubuntu logo and the red/white dots indicator). I won't load any further, but I can still turn it off by pressing the power button. Has someone else got this problem? Ubuntu was my main partition, and I don't have any practical way to make a hard install.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 on this old desktop that is currently running WinXP. I get to the menu to choose to try ubuntu, install, or boot hard drive. I choose Install and it begins to load with those 5 dots then after a minute or so it just freezes on that screen. I then try to choose the "try" option and it does the same thing, although takes slightly longer before it freezes.I just happen to have a v8.10 disc laying around so I try that. I get to the same options menu, it loads, and then shows a black screen with a white blinking underscore. Same goes for when I use the "try" option.Specs:2.53GHz P41.5GB RAM250GB HDD

screen. This only happens when my external hard drive isn't plugged in. How do i fix this? It hasn't always happened like this. I have a windows 7 install disk, but it never gives me the option to repair windows or go to command prompt.
I am using grub4dos 0.44 but can't boot directly into Kubuntu. The bootup freezes at the step of reading the initrd. Can't copy 'n paste the exact bootup-message but it looks similar to this one, I found on another forum-thread:

I installed fedora on my laptop and everything went fine, i installed my bradcom drivers and rebooted.
Next step was kmod for nvidia but when i rebooted i couldn't use fedora anymore cause loading freezes at some point. same thing happens to my desktop pc, where i solved the problem booting with an older kernel (this time i have an error saying "eth0 link not ready" or something like that). Everytime i try to boot with a more recent kernel loading freezes. The point is...i can go through with my desktop pc by choosing another kernel, but i can't even boot with my laptop.
I recently upgraded from Hardy to 9.10 Kubuntu. The install went smoothly, and when I boot up, the loading screen (the one with the progress bar) does its thing. Then I see the 'waiting' cursor (in Kubuntu, the two dots chasing each other around in a circle). I see this for about two to three seconds, then the entire thing freezes up and I can't do anything, including switching to a virtual console. How do I figure out my system's dying words so I can figure out what's going wrong? As a (sort of) aside, when I open files in /var/log for reading with cat <file> | less, I have to Page-Down a whole bunch to get to the most recent stuff. Is there a way to jump to the bottom, or read with something other than what I have been using?

And now I manage to use Yum and it is not working, I cant find out what is happening but yum loads the plugins and then freezes and is no reaction to ctrl-c or something to stop it so I am have to kill it dna finally got no result from any update processes. Also I manage to clean cache or even to run yum. I checked the logs and it writes nothing about this ,neither an error or something to make me understand whats happening. Tried to install with rpm but the same thing happens. It just freezes...
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe problem is I've set up a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu 10.04. Ubuntu was working fine till 2 days back but now when I select Ubuntu from the grub screen i get a whole lot of numbers next which it'll say Usb drive or sd card reader etc.. these go by quickly and then the comp stops running. If i press enter on the keyboard I get Initramfs and then i can type but nothing happens even if I type reboot. if I press cntrl+alt+F2 then i get a blank screen with flashing cursor. Same with recovery mode. Windows boots fine. The grub2 screen comes fine. The last thing i did before this happened is reconfigure the grub2 screen, but it seems to be fine (i had added a background img and reordered the boot options) I did not edit grub.cfg. I would prefer not to reinstall it as iv done it a half a dozen times already in the last few weeks..
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install Fedora 12 x64 on my 27" iMac 10,1. I have tried both the installation dvd and the gnome live cd (both x64 i did not try the x86). On the installation dvd I get as far as the menu giving me the boot/install options - I have tried to install both with a basic video driver and the regular install/upgrade option - both times it begins loading components for the installer program (/sbin/loader) etc. After it loads sbin/loader and mounts the partitions it freezes with half the screen being the terminal txt beforehand and the other half being just a standard fedora logo w/blue background. It is not much different when I try the live-cd the only different is it does the exact same thing when the timer for automatic login is done. Any possible command line arguments that I could use to stop the graphical corruption?

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust recently installed fedora 11 64-bit on my laptop. Everything was fine until today. Everytime I boot up, it crashes right after the desktop loads. Everything is loaded except the area where the running programs are on the taskbar is just one big white block. And a bubble popup says "New SELinux security alert. AVC denial." but everything is frozen. Can't move the cursor or use keyboard. and nothing is happening on the screen. Completly frozen. Anybody have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it?

Last night my friend helped upgrade my system, I now have 3 drives (20gig F12) (60gig XP) and (320gig Win7) now the PC only loads Win7 as I think my friend told bios to boot from 320gig. Has anybody here got experience with triple boot from 3 drives? Here is my guess, tell bios to boot from other drive and add Win7 to grub. Not sure how but that's my guess. Also what worries me is that win7 does not "see" the other two drives.

I select Ubuntu instead of Windows from the Windows boot loader, but instead of getting the usual menu of different linux versions (I think 2, as I updated it at same point), and Windows, I get the GRUB command prompt instead.I've looked at th2e Wubi Guide (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide), and I've followed the instructions for "How can I access my Wubi install and repair my install if it won't boot?", but that reveals no problems.For the record, I'm fairly new to linux and ubuntu, but I'm good with computers generally. The main operating system on my computer is Windows Vista, but I'm currently typing this from a Live CD of Ubuntu 9.10. The virtual disk (root.disk), is currently mounted as vdisk, as indicated in the Wubi Guide.
Ideally I would like to get Ubuntu to load as it used to (with a menu). However, if there is a way to boot from the GRUB command line that would be good too. I'm not at all familiar with GRUB, and the commands I've tried (boot and linux, I think), get errors saying no kernel specified, or loaded, or something like that.
I'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
I currently tri-boot windows 7, ubuntu 10.10 and backtrack linux. I want to have a fresh install for ubuntu 11.04 (replacing 10.10), but the disk freezes when I hit try it now. I don't like to install a new version of Ubuntu if the try it now does not work (as I worry that the installation won't work). I have a studio xps 17 with a quad core core i7 Q720, ATI Radeon 4670 (1 GB I think), Broadcom NetLink Gigabit Ethernet, Intel Wifi link 5300 AGN, 4GB ddr 3 RAM.

The screen says "Starting disk partitioner" and the progress bar stops at 45%. View 6 Replies View RelatedI performed a clean install of Fedora 15 from DVD and it goes fine until the end when the install program says to reboot the computer. Once I do that, the computer hangs before Grub loads, i.e. just after all of the BIOS messages, so there isn't any error message to indicate what is wrong. I had no issues with Fedora 14.

I boot the i386 iso on a usb stick and I enter my name fine and create an account with a password, and then after the time is checked, the installation gets halfway through the hard disk bar and then suddenly it freezes. Sorry if i'm a little unspecific, I've forgotten what the name of the process was exactly and I don't want to have to try again if unnecessary.

I installed Debian on my PC with a Acer Stock motherboard (xc600) with amd64 and after the installation finished it told me to remove my installation media and reboot. After reboot I was returned this message ' ERROR: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.'. I have verified with gparted using mint live OS that I have Debian installed on my system.
I got believes that this may have be caused by a broken grub or I need to configure something I don't know how in BIOS.
I will update the topic later..
My installation media was a USB 2.0 flashdrive with a Debian 8.2 Jessie Installer and 9 different Linux distros. I have installed Debian multiple times before on my laptop and never had this problem so I know how to go through the installation process and set the partitions.
