Jun 2, 2010Whenever there is a kernel upgrade, "update-grub" is run and my customized "/boot/grub/grub.cfg" is gone. is there any way to prevent this?

Aug 12, 2010In 9.10 after kernel update there was always prompt window if i want to do changes in grub config file. In 10.04 there's no such question and every time i do update i have to edit my grub config file in order to get rid of older kernels and set windows as second position in boot menu. why does it happen and how to stop updates overwrite my grub config?

I was building and testing custom kernels and somehow I managed to get the display configuration messed up so that when the computer boots up gets to starting the nouveau driver it displays garbage on the display. The boot up continues and I can login from another computer using ssh.
How do I reset the display configuration (or fix this problem)?
I have added nomodeset to the kernel parameters and the vesa drivers do work but I want the hi-res nouveau back without having to re-install f-14.

Sep 17, 2010I currently have a problem where when xubuntu is restarted using the power button, it will prompt the user with grub asking which selection to boot (xubuntu recovery or xubuntu) this feature itself is fine, but for some reason there is no timer, which means that unless you hit enter, it will always be stuck on the GRUB selection screen. I am wondering if there is any way to change this, is there anyway to enter a timer into the system so no matter what, after x seconds it will boot xubuntu?

Jun 25, 2010The other day I was using BitTornado and it was running so slow it was almost unholy. After some research I found out that if the yellow light was on it means I couldn't receive any incoming connections and had to open some ports on the firewall. That, my friends, is not the problem. I tried to manually open up the bittorrent port and did some other things that I can't quite remember but eventually I accidentally killed all bittorrent functionality on my laptop.
Is there any way I can reset my network and ports back to the default settings or am I utterly screwed? I'd really prefer not to have to reinstall my whole OS just to fix my bittorrent or worse, have to download on Vista *shudders*. I'd rather go back to my uber-slow bittorrent than none at all. I've tried everything I can think of, even the godlike might of Google couldn't get me out of this one. Now I am forced to bother you, all because I wanted to see a damn sci-fi film from Switzerland (Cargo[2009]).

Mar 6, 2009How do I set my centos system to the configuration it had directly after the installation? Because there are so many messed up tings on here right now, firefox will only work with my proxy server if I put its IP directly into firefox but not if I put its IP into the system proxy settings and then point firefox at that. httpd refuses to serve up any kind of documen apart from the test page randomly and even then I sometimes get a 403 error. Seriously is this the normal practice for setting up a LAMP server???

Aug 3, 2011My problem, GRUB loader appears when it normally did not and Ubuntu fails to boot. My story, I installed ubuntu on a HP Touchsmart laptop a month ago because I was having troubles with Windows and... well I just wanted to install ubuntu. All goes well until a week ago when my sound was permanently muted through a hardware switch and ubuntu was not detecting it. I tried hitting the button on my laptop but nothing worked. Soo... I tried resetting my BIOS in hopes that it would fix it. I set the bios to its defaults and booted. This is where it got weird. the GRUB loader appeared when it normally did not and upon booting, a black screen with flashing cursor would show up and then... nothing. I changed the bios settings back to what they were and still nothing.
I have removed the silent boot from the GRUB boot line and can see whats going on... a little, the last thing it shows is "Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done." annnd nothing else. When booting in recovery mode it stops after 30 or so seconds on...

General :: What To Put In The Grub File And 'x' Flages To Reset To Tie All Together
Mar 20, 2011I'm lost before I can start using linux I have to install grub; grub is used to start linux, before you can install grub you must start linux ..... OK, I've borrowed a live-dvd from a friend (my burner is stuffed), its got Grub v 1.98; so thats what I'm stuck with (at least for now) Maybe I'm not stuck, but I'm finding the live cd too large and confusing, with filesystems I've never heard of and I cant work out what I can and cant do, given its a non-volatile media.
Anyway grub2 is good, as I think I can boot ISO images from an msdos or linux partition, without burning a cd; however, its bad, as to create grub.cfg I will need to build grub2 for whatever flavor of linux I finally choose (can you compile Grub for any kernel and use any library to do it?) What I am trying to do is a "frugal install" of a smaller distro, with boot, fat16, swap, & distro partitions, (the computer is p5mmx 200/64MB which runs 98SE and off97 fine, but seems to be minimal for linux). All the instructions to do this, tell you to copy the files across and modify your grub config (ie you already have it installed)
This is where I'm up to, I have created 2primary & 2 extended partitions. Put ext2 filesystems onto the first primary partition (for booting), and the 2nd extended (for linux) Run grub-install, so there is a directory grub at the root of the first partition. created a "linux" directory at the root of each of the ext2 partitions copied vmlinuz & initrd.gz to "linux" on the boot partition, copied the .sfs files to the other partition directory I don't know what to put in the grub file and what 'x' flages to reset to tie all this together.

In order to make the website work again I have to run /etc/init.d/networking restart. The server is running a static IP address and is not resetting when the website goes down. Jan 6, 2011I've got a strage problem with openssh-server on debian lenny. I've done setup of sshd and basically everything works fine. I can check the fingerprint of the ssh-keys on the server and it matches with the fingerprint shown on the client for the first connection. so the key is stored in the known-hosts-file on the client.
The problem occurs after a "connection reset by peer" (i guess when the connected client goes to sleep or a timeout occures)!
After such a reset, when I try to connect to the server, the banner "WARNING: REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED!" appears and the shown fingerprint of the server-key is totally wrong (it differs from the one on the server, BUT it is everytime when this problem occurs the same fingerprint). If I nevertheless remove the correct key from the known-host-file and accept the new key, I still can't login (permission denied).
To fix this situation temporarily I just need to restart the networking on the server. After the network-restart I get (again) the correct fingerprint of the server-key and can login without problems. Until the next connection reset.

I know it makes no real difference against internet bourne attacks, but even so I must say I found it shocking. The only way I've found to stop this is to encrypt the entire HDD, so noone could get into single user mode without first knowing the encryption key/password.

May 28, 2010I have a dual boot system: windows xp and suse(10.2). I had to reinstall windows(again). When I tried to use the installer, it kept reseting my partitions to 500gb+ to linux. Nothing I tried would let me put it to the way it was(50gb to linux). Repair install failed. Update wouldn't work. MSwindows in the grub boot menu disappeared. I tried reinstalling suse. The installer blocked any attempt by me to put the partitions back to normal. How do reset the windows and linux partitions(850gb windows, 50gb to suse linux)?

Apr 25, 2010If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

I tried to upgrade to Lucid Linx while in Karmic Koala but the installation process froze while doing something with "memtest86+". CTRL-C got it to unfreeze and finish the installation but on a restart when I chose the Ubuntu OS it kept restarting rather than booting. I decided to start fresh.
So I booted into Vista and uninstalled Wubi Karmic Koala and proceeded to do a fresh install of Wubi Lucid Lynx. The installation, including the reboot, went smoothly. However, when the Update Manager was installing software a new screen popped up saying this:

So I leave the checkbox unchecked and click on forward. Nothing happens. All the Update Manager windows remain the same and nothing changes when I hit the Forward button. The "Applying Changes" window is stuck at "Setting up grub-pc (1.98-1ubuntu6) ...".
Can I safely force quit the Update Manager installation? Why am I getting that message about Grub? I didn't choose anything like that.

May 30, 2010I have a Knoppix DVD-ROM. I also have its image as k.iso at the second partition of HDD of my laptop. I use the DVD-ROM and write at the boot prompt the cheat code:

I also have a folder Knoppix made during bootprompt by using the cheatcode knoppix tohd=/dev/sda5 and I can use the following cheatcode while booting from the DVD-ROM, like knoppix fromhd=/dev/sda5My laptop runs Debian Lenny 5.0.4, installed in the first partition of my HDD.
Can Grub be configured to boot from the Knoppix k.iso image, or the knoppix folder, which I use to use the Knoppix OS, so that I am freed from using the DVD, when I want to use the knoppix system?

Jul 10, 2010I am trying to dual boot my system. MS Vista and Debian lenny 5.05. Installed Vista first, need vista for voice recognition software. Installed Lenny second but grub does not see Vista. Installed NTFS-g3 so I can read and write to /dev/sdc1 where my vista is. But grub still does not detect it. Installed grub2 and upgraded from legacy but still grub2 does not see the vista partition.

Debian Configuration :: Grub Fails To Load From EFI?
Mar 8, 2011I have happily been booting debian through grub2 by chain loading it with efi (rEFIt), until today, and now get to begin another learning experience I've been using linux for a while, and kept seeing the guides for splitting up /, /var, /tmp, /usr, and /home, into different partitions, so I did just that when I switched from Ubuntu to Debian (I've realized that this was a little bit pointless because I formated them all as ext4, but at least it acts as a safety for mission critical drives when I overfill /home. I unfortunately didn't give /tmp enough space, and it kept crashing SimpleScan so I decided to use gparted to resize it.
The operation went alright as far as I can tell, and was straight forward because there was some free space behind it so I only had to append the partition. I synced the master boot record through rEFIt as usual, but when I booted the linux partition grub did load, and only a blank screen is presented. I eventually figured out I could use the gparted live cd to boot back into debian, and have been screwing around for a while with grub commands trying to figure out how to allow rEFIt to successfully boot GRUB on its own again. I ran grug-mkconfig to replace my /boot/grub/grub.cfg file and have rebooted but that did not help.
I tried reinstalling grub and grub-common with apt-get, but I didn't purge configuration settings for fear of losing something important. My current focus is on the command grub-install. I think i just need to run this command with the /boot device, like su - root; grub-install /dev/sda1 or some thing like that. wipe out the MBR on /dev/sda1, or screw up what good configuration is left in grub, so I want to make sure that I'm using the right /dev. Currently the gparted output looks like this:
/dev/sda1: fat32 - GPT (gpt from fdisk, gparted shows EFI with the boot flag)
/dev/sda2: hfs+ - MacOSx
/dev/sda3: ext4 - /root

how the gnome live gparted disk would have been able to boot. I have access to a hard drive so I'll probably end up making backup images of as many of the partitions as I can, and then try more drastic bashing around, but if anyone has any suggestions/wisdom they could offer while I'm researching solutions I'd appreciate it. I eventually want to try to axe my osx partition and boot directly from GRUB2-EFI so I figure it is worth the investment in time to get to know grub a little bit more intimately.

Apr 20, 2011I've been following grub-common bug #606845 and in coming to a solution for the issue, these guys are using dd as a brute force means of swapping out master boot records or trampling them, if you prefer. (Background: The issue is related to grub and certain xp installations)
An sample snip of code:

1) Is mbrxp.bin a back-up of the mbr taken before installation of squeeze (or grub in general)?
2) Am I fubar if I didn't make a back-up of the mbr before installing grub?
Debian Configuration :: In Grub Disk Changed From Hd0 To Hd1?
Apr 26, 2011We had a server failure this morning because grub was throwing error 15 (file not found). We discovered that the disk had changed names from hd0,0 to hd1,0. Making the appropriate replacements in menu.lst fixed the problem, but I'm still wondering what could have caused the spontaneous name change.
here are some other possibly related tidbits: * the server had been down because of a power loss, but it is behind a UPS so i doubt there is any electrical damage * eth0 also temporarily failed but the system failed over to eth1
My current theory is that when the bios was configuring the hardware the loss of eth0 shuffled around the addresses of the remaining hardware on the pci bus, which somehow caused the hd0/hd1 confusion. The problem is that everything i've read [URL] says that the drive assignment should be based on the way the disk is connected to the motherboard (which in this case didn't change)
