I had installed Ubuntu on my one and only hd. I partitioned with GParted and installed fedora Release 9 Sulphur. i can not boot Ubuntu. I tired some changes to grub.conf but with no luck, namely, 1. title Ubuntu root (hd0,0) chainloader +1 2. title Ubuntu configfile (hd0,0)/boot/grub/menu.lst. this one gives error 15 file not found. I have accidentally started the recovery OS of my netbook, and messed-up grub. I can start the Netbook from a live CD, but I do not manage to restore grub to anything useful. Below the outcome of the Boot Info Script I have found in the forum:

I have recently installed Debian alongside Vista on the same boot menu using the GRUB booting device. Only problem is, I couldn't boot Vista at all any more, so I removed my Debian installation from that drive. But the GRUB boot record persists, I don't have the Recovery disk to restore my old system, so I have to find a way to manually remove the GRUB track and put the old record in its place. I assume there was a copy made of it by the installation program, now my only problem is to find that file and copy the content back in place (at the address at the very beginning of the drive) all that by using Linux code, since that is all I have left. Being new to this game, I have no idea how to begin writing the right command for a job like this
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have XP, Win7 Pro and F 11 installed. Before I installed F 11, Win 7 boot mgr was working fine. I then installed F 11 and I went to System/Admin/bootloader to edit it and it wouldn't bring up the boot loader. In the attachment was the error msg. Now my only option when I boot up is F 11.
I do not have access to the Win 7 DVD only the F 11 install disk since I am on a fishing trip and need to use Win 7. How can I repair to the grub boot loader to boot into Win 7?
I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).
I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot.What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

I just installed F12 from DVD onto drive D: (C: has windowsXP on it)
EDIT: Forgot to mention that drice C: is SATA, drive D: is IDE
Drive D: doesn't appear in my boot options in bios. :EEK:
When I boot my PC, it just goes straight to windows without a grub menu.
Is this easily fixed or will I have to re-install?
I installed F14 from my usb according to the wiki page using unetbootin. The usb boots perfectly and i get a working F14 system. I partitioned my HD with gparted and got a /,/home and swap partition, then used the installer to install the system using them. The installer finishes without a problem and ask me to reboot. When I reboot , there is a blank black screen. No grub menu , no fedora loading. I reboot with the usb and the partitions are full with the files from F14 , there is no xorg.log in the /var/log/ so f14 doesn't even start so the problem seems to be with grub.
I check the grub.conf in /boot/ , i set the timeout to 5 secs , i check that the kernel is using nomodeset (according to this wiki page there is a problem with ati), xorg.conf is using vesa as a driver and I reinstall grub with grub-install with no problems.My notebook is a acer aspire 5552 , i don't think is a hardware problem because I've used arch and opensuse with no problems in it. Fedora seems a nice distro , but this error is preventing me from using it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to get FC13 running on a Toshiba SG20 - no keyboard, no monitor. grub.conf and the entry KEYBOARDTYPE=pc and I think that's where it's hanging. Can I say KEYBOARDTYPE=none ? There is nothing, that I can find, even on the gnu-grub site as to options for KBT.
I can attach the drive to my desktop - has screen and keyboard - and the system boots fine. However when I boot on my desktop I get the blue screen with the FC13 logo - semi circle - looks like a top laying on it's side.

I installed FC on 2 new partitions I created during the installation, so I guess they moved before my window's.Is there a solution to fix this without erasing my windows partition? (at worse, I'm ok with deleting my linux partitions for I haven't done anything with it yet).
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux systems and just installed Fedora 14 onto my Windows Vista laptop. I chose the shrink existing system option and then proceeded to install Fedora. The only problem is that when I choose Other in the Grub boot menu my Windows Vista goes straight to the recovery screen and does not boot. I don't want to do a point recovery. Is Vista not running because I shrunk it or because of some configuration that I did not add in the Grub files. How to solve this problem and get Vista running properly from the dual boot menu?

I have a Knoppix DVD-ROM. I also have its image as k.iso at the second partition of HDD of my laptop. I use the DVD-ROM and write at the boot prompt the cheat code:

I also have a folder Knoppix made during bootprompt by using the cheatcode knoppix tohd=/dev/sda5 and I can use the following cheatcode while booting from the DVD-ROM, like knoppix fromhd=/dev/sda5My laptop runs Debian Lenny 5.0.4, installed in the first partition of my HDD.

I somehow recalled a rule re the location of the boot partitions with LILO being required to be in the first part of the drive (1024 cylinders, it seems) and I found it indeed in an old doc:
Boot Partition: Your boot partition ought to be a primary partition, not a logical partition. This will ease recovery in case of disaster, but it is not technically necessary. It must be of type 0x83 "Linux native". If you are using lilo, your boot partition must be contained within the first 1024 cylinders of the drive. (Typically, the boot partition need only contain the kernel image.) Is this still valid in GRUB, esp in Fedora 10?
I am new to Fedora, having used Ubuntu for 2 years. However, I am a little dissappointed in the latest Ubuntu releases and want to try something new. So I installed Fedora 10 on my second hard drive, deleting Ubuntu. On my first hard drive, I have Vista installed. During installation I followed a guide for dual-booting and it said not to install Grub to the MBR of the Windows partition, so I followed that advice...
This caused a Grub error 15 on the next boot. I booted the Fedora installation from the second hard drive. My hypothesis is that the Grub bootloader of Ubuntu was still installed somewhere and it could not find the Ubuntu linux kernel. Therefore, it gave error 15. So I installed Vista again and am hesitant to try Fedora again... How can I install Fedora alongside Vista properly (as dual boot)?
Or should I stay away, because it is apparently too difficult for me? Is it worthwhile to make a separate /home partition as I read that it is preferred to do a clean install every release? Could I just do that with Gparted and then assign the partition as /home in the Anaconda installer? The downside is that I then need to create a swap and / partition too, right?
I successfully installed Fedora 11 from the DVD iso. At the end, the installation program prompts me to reboot the system. But when the boot loader appears after rebooting, there are only the old entries.
I have 2 IDE disks and one sata disk. The first IDE disk is hd0, the second IDE is hd1. The SATA disk is hd2. In the setup, I selected hd0 to install grub. Fedora 11 was installed on the SATA disk (hd2).[edit] I forgot to say, that Fedora 10 is on /dev/sda and Fedora 9 on /dev/sdb
Shrinking the Vista partition and format the rest of the HD as ext4 and install Fedora into that partition and put the GRUB in MBR, is this the right way to dual-boot fedora with Vista?

I am totally sick of GRUB, even though it is what seems to be the most popular,and is what normally is used as the "default" when any linux system is installed, that is what the install ISO's use, but anyway, that is another topic, over the years, "grub failing", has been a problem for me , many times.
I saw this (From LILO to GRUB Howto).
I have a ~ 2008 notebook (Compaq CQ60-137EL) on which I had Windows 7 only (it was sold with Windows Vista installed).
Later I installed Debian Jessie 8.2.0 Stable ("Graphical expert install" from DVD), along with GRUB as a boot manager (I chose not to install it on the EFI removable media path).
Since then, if I select Windows 7 on the GRUB boot screen, I see "Starting Windows...", and after few seconds the screen flashes for a moment, and then the PC reboots: I see the bios screen, followed by the GRUB screen again.
What's even more weird about this is the fact it just happens only in like ~50% of the cases. In the other 50%, Win7 starts flawlessy.
I even tried to install Debian first, then Windows 7, then re-install GRUB, but I got the same issue, even with both system freshly installed.
On 6 attempts, 3 times it worked and 3 times it didn't.
On my desktop PC I'm in the same setting, but I don't have this issue. I think it may be related with the fact I have Win7 on a SSD and I installed Debian on a separate HDD, while on my notebook, as you can imagine, there's just one single HDD.
I clone an drive with CentOs 5.3 from a drive connected to ATA0 device 0 of an ATA controller to an identical drive connected to the same ATA contoller ATA1 device 0. No matter what I do it boots from ATA1 device 0 and I need to be able to control which one it is booted from. When I have puppy linux on one drive and CentOs on the other drive I can control the boot thru the system BIOS either way no matter if puppy is in ATA 0 or 1. So its not a BIOS issue. It appears (to me) to be a grub configuration issue. Since the 2 drives are clones they both have VolGroup00. I think grub loads from the last VolGroup00 found.

I did a fresh install of Fedora Core 10 32bit on my Caompaq Presario AMD 64 laptop which originally only had Vista ultimate 64bit. When I go in to grub and choose windows I get a screen that says:
