Being able to reset the root password by booting into single usermode by editing grub. This is a MAJOR flaw. I know it makes no real difference against internet bourne attacks, but even so I must say I found it shocking. The only way I've found to stop this is to encrypt the entire HDD, so noone could get into single user mode without first knowing the encryption key/password.

I've modified the kernel line using Single, S, and 1 but it appears that these commands are being totally ignored as the server continues with the boot process and displays the GUI logon screen. The server in question is a VM box running on ESX v3.5 U4. The person that created this VM is no longer employed here and I've exhausted everything I know regarding Single User Mode.

If I am installing a new package from ubuntu software center, and consquently I have to log in as root to do so, which means I have given the system 'privileges' as the program is being installed, I decide to go open mozilla, and surf suspicious sites on the net. Is it possible in that case for me to get a virus?
When we enter the password for the root user in order to run one program such as ubuntu software center, does that mean that all programs have root privileges for the time being (as the software center is installing the program)?
When I go to single user mode for resetting root password, It ask root pawssword for login.The message displayed on prompt is "Give root password for login.On the boot prompt, I select kernel and press 'e' and after one space type 1 for single User mode and then press 'b' for booting.It shows message entering in single user mode but ask root password. Even I tried into rescue mode, but I couldn't ser root password.In rescue mode on prompt, It shows rescue login: I typed root, But when typed 'passwd' foe resetting root pawssword,It shows message unknown user and not authetication.

When I tried to setup my MySQL password, I created a password with punctuation in it. MySQL didn't want the password and gave some error about BASH. I tried changing my password again but now I constantly get the error that I am unable to login. I tried all the possibilities with the password I entered before but i just can't login to MySQL anymore. I found some help sites on how to reset your password by running MySQL in the safe mode but that didn't work for me. Can anyone help me resetting my password? Next time i'll use a pass without punctuation Every help is much appreciated! BTW, I also tried uninstalling MySQL with yum (yum remove mysql) and it uninstalled, but when I installed it again the password was still there

Unfortunately, one of our employees cannot remember her password to her email account and as such I need to reset it on our linux server.What I want to check is that this email account is actually a linux user account and I simply will reset the password for it using the passwd command from the root login. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an Upstart job, you may also use the start( utility, e.g. start mysql mysql start/running, process 20301.

I knew there must be a way. I consulted with my friend "Google". I'd like to share it here as my 1st post (too bad that I'm not allowed to paste screenshots)
1) Boot up the server, when you are at the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server..." entry, press "e".
2) Highlight the "kernel /vmlinuz...." line then press "e" again.
3) Type the word "single" to the end of the line (with an empty space before the word single). Press Enter.
4) Press "b"
5) System will boot. When you get the prompt "#", type "passwd" to enter in new password for root.
6) Reboot the system. Done

I forgot my root password for mysql, and after some searching I found several solutions to fix it. The problem is that nothing happens, it just hangs.Also tried the the --init-file option, that one runs fine, at least it returned to the command line. But the sql query in the file to which it point doesnt seem to do anything. The password wasn't changed to the one I specified in the sql file.Any idea what could be going on here, and how I could fix it?

Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. But my root password does not work (I guess was my fault to type wrong in the first place or some type of short term memory lost). I looked at the root password recovery procedure which involves select single user at GRUB page when booting. But for some reasons, Fedora 11 does not boot into GRUB. I tried Alt+CTRL+F1, F1 or Shift, none of those gives me Grub screen.

Although I've used Fedora since Core 1, I'm no expert on security issues, and this baffles me. She's doesn't know how to change the root password, so why doesn't it work any more? I have studied all the tutorials which instruct that the grub.cfg file should not be edited directly.This old laptop has one of the dreaded Intel graphics chips for which the kernel automatically loads the i915 module. View 5 Replies View RelatedI updated the kernel to 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64 and had to reinstall and rebuild the kernel module for my ATi driver as usual, so I edited the kernel arguments at the grub splash screen so that I could boot into single user mode and install the driver (i.e appending the relevant line with '1'). The interesting thing is, the system booted directly into single user mode as root when the system started up. No password was required.
